  1. I was going to put this on the burglaries thread yesterday but it may be more appropriate here as this has been brought up. If the bin men leave the bins in the street and you aren't at home to put them away yourself ? particularly a problem now there are three to empty and various different collections ? you might as well stick a sign in your window saying "Burglars please note there is currently no-one home" It would be a nice bit of joined-up thinking if the Council insisted bins are always returned and not left in drive, or even worse, in street. An even more serious problem if you are away for the week on holiday.
  2. One of the consequences of a CPZ at East Dulwich station will surely be that commuters will start parking around north dulwich station where it is usually pretty easy to park. Which means that if a CPZ is started at ED it won't be long before it spreads to ND Station too. I presume the reason that the CPZ at Herne Hill didn't cause commuters to change to ND is because HH is on a different line. ND is the next station down from London Bridge on same line.
  3. Computed Shorty - any chance you can put the Milo Road VE Day Party picture on the forum. Sounds fascinating.
  4. drew - yes, in the programme he is interviewed in Manze's jellied eel cafe in Peckham even though all the references are to camberwell and dulwich ? i guess it provided the kind of earthy colour they wanted. Sipping Earl Grey in Franklins would not have had the same effect.
  5. Just watched advance copy of the upcoming Who Do You Think You Are? about wonky-toothed comedian Alan Carr. Interesting to see that part of his story revolves around his great grandfather who lived in Whateley Road. A few inconsistencies in the telling of this side of his story but some nice local colour about the Camberwell "Pal's Battalion" in World War One, which paraded down Lordship Lane, Townley Road etc before heading to France. S ome grainy footage too, though I didn't recognise any locations. Certainly of interest to local historians out there. Programme goes out on Wednesday.
  6. I know a good lock helps, but I think with the number of bikes on the road these days it is often down to bad luck that your bike gets nicked. I've got a bog standard Ridgeback, a bog standard ?10 D lock and it has not been nicked in five years. A few months ago I left it locked outside Oval Station for a week when I had to get to the tube to get an early holiday flight. I figured replacing the bike would almost be cheaper than a cab to Gatwick. Even I was surprised it was still there When I got back. Of course, having written this it'll probably disappear next week.
  7. I'd love to know how Harris enforces the no phones rule - Charter also has it and at a conservative estimate i'd say 90% of kids take their phones in. All the ones i know certainly do...
  8. Out of focus - I've had this problem too. But in fairness I think it's not laziness, it's to do with postman not being allowed to collect the payments for missing stamps. Dunno why. Possibly either thru not being trusted with cash, risk of mugging or all those pound coins being a health and safety issue.
  9. Or better still pee all over SE22 if it keeps everyone from Brixton and Prckham out.
  10. Bang a nail in an unlikely place on door unspottable from outside and hang keys on that?
  11. I know people that have used this one - had no idea it was legal! Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > There's a 24 hour off-licence opposite kebab and > wine at the Grove Vale end of Lordship Lane.
  12. What places currently sell booze 24/7 in SE22?I didn't know any did and info might come in handy if I get a 5am thirst.
  13. Bob, That's the usual one i was thinking of, though I think he likes to give the impression he has driven non-stop overnight with the catch that he's caught himself on his own little boat with his own little net. This one was new so I wondered a) if he was bona fide b) if so, if he was any good - can't be any more expensive than Moxons, which is very close to us.
  14. He came round asking if we wanted fresh fish but had no van in sight so I wondered how reliable he was. Also we've had one before who claimed fish was fresh from a trawler in Hull/Grimsby but it looked like it had just come from the freezer counter in Iceland. No northern accents this time, wondered if this was the same company.
  15. Anyone had the fish man round today? What did you think of him? Did you try any fish? Did you see any van?
  16. I know there's the argument that if you don't breach traffic regs you've got nothing to fear, but that little camera car does seem brutally efficient. It was parked on the corner of East Dulwich Grove at around 4.30 today, near the box junction on Lordship Lane. I couldn't quite understand who it was after but I bet it was doing a brisk trade. No-one would surely have been stupid enough to park on the double yellow lines right in front of it, if it was there to catch people sitting in the box junction it was being pretty sneaky about it. Maybe it was there to catch cars doing illegal right turns?
  17. *Bob* Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > A house prices thread! Woo!! It's been a while. > > Jezza - here you go: check out this little fella > > Lawks-a-mercy! Crikey indeed. I think we viewed that house when we moved to ED in 1995. It was on the market for about....?95,000. Make what you will of that...
  18. Good morning, Thanks for all your replies. The mixed response seems to suggest that there is no right or wrong answer. I guess Marmora Man put their finger on it by saying it's parenthood, but in this case what does parenthood mean? the tough love of teaching them to take responsibilty for their own clumsiness/bad luck or perpetually bailing them out when they get in a fix. Or, maybe, as Huguenot says, tell them to live with it ? get them to learn that life isn't perfect. Anyway, the dilemma was unexpectedly avoided last night. She went to The Apple Store who initially said a replacement would be ?140. When she hesitated they knocked the prices down to ?70. The when she agreed their system went down and they were unable to process it so gave her a free replacement anyway. Conclusion? if you have a Mac problem don't go to your heart-like-a-stone parents, go to apple in Covent Garden and start sobbing.
