  1. Maybe - I still like to think that as the oil industry declines the alternative energy grows, eventually replacing it. All a bit karma-esque. I must have a bit of hippy in me..... I shall pop to The Plough later and get them to put a bank of windmills on the roof to power the smokers heaters. The neighbours will hate it, but as its for the benefit of the enviroment, they can't complain...!
  2. I don't think the plough putting up a few beams to shade the smokers is really in the same league as Cafe Neros blatant disregard for planning laws. Nero have acted like the italians they so proudly mimic, in that they do what they want, apply retrospectivly and then pay the 'fine'. I am torn on this one. I think tearing down Nero would leave a messy shop front on LL which would be a nightmare to fill the unit. Is it stays, it sets a precedent for other chains. I wish the council had the balls to stop building works which are clearly flouting planning laws then we wouldn't have this issue. I think Nero will stay, but should be strictly limited to reduced opening hours, and should not serve 'food' which i believe is the contentious point. A fine should be paid and be used towards a community project (the roundabout?).
  3. Yep - good clean pipes so the beer tasted of beer and unlike the CPT no wonkyness the following day. A few questions for you all loosly based on this thread: 1. Is it fair to expect someone who wishes to sit outside (smoker or non-smoker) to be cold? If heating is possible and it encourages people to spend money in our community is this an issue? 2. Are the individual benefits of smoke free pubs greater than the potential damage done to the enviroment by outside heaters? 3. Is this feverish concern about the enviroment actually the biggest threat to global economic stability or is is simply the start of a new industry which will eventually replace the oil industry? Bit of a big one that, and sure to be lounged.
  4. 4 bed semi-d on green tarif costs ?140 pcm but we are ?300 in the red, so I would guess ?150pcm is about right. However, we are guilty of using a tumble dryer, which probably accounts for ?20 of that a month.
  5. I was with Dulwich dad last night and the plough was excellent. Good interior, nice outside sitting room for the smokers, good ambiance and a door man keeping the riff-raff out (a drunk scotsman trying to start a fight with his own reflection). Off thread i know - but we did have to wait for 20mins for a pint. teeting problems i'm sure.
  6. She was banging on about it on grumpy old women on TV. She says the house is an exercise in minimalist living. The result is she has a huge unit at Big Yellow full of sh1t she cant put in the house. Daft as she looks if you ask me! I like her big old silver roller though - I've always fanceied rocking up at Glastonbury in one of those.
  7. She walked past me Lordship lane a few weeks back. I am still gutted that i didn't stick my foot out and trip her up. Maybe a well placed poke in her eye might be easier.
  8. sorry to be a bit sceptical, but why hasn't this been followed up on the news? surely 2 events should qualify for london tonight? why have there not been signs up from the police. i nice big yellow board would help raise awareness very quickly. [changed to lowercase, please don't write in all capital letters- The Administrator]
  9. I'm really happy to see a general positive approach to this thread. I can't belive that anyone would have concerns about an old trashed school building being turned into - a school..! Anyone would think they are proposing to put a hostel for pervs, rapists, paedos and the like there from some of the posts. Also - I would love to see kids using the park daily - exercise I hear is rather good for them. Quite what Macroban has in mind when he / she talks about dissafected ED residents is very interesting. Most seem to draw the line at venting steam on this forum - suggesting we would consider smashing up school facilities that most of our friends / neighbours children go to is to be quite honest - totally ludicrous. Maybe you would consider it - the rest of us wouldn't. Prat.
  10. The majority of 4x4 school runs are done for infant schools and for schools with difficult access, I cannot see why Harris with older pupils and good transport links should require drop-offs. Add to this a very sizable local school age population who can walk in under 10mins. Macroban - I think you are being a tad reactionary and dare i say a bit hysterical. There will of course be an increase in traffic, but I don't think any council will run the risk of a local residents fight by doing something like tarmacing a common as a drop off point, or removing traffic restrictions. If anything, they will make dropping off almost impossible to deter the school runners. A good academy in East Dulwich will be a fantastic assest to the area and will help generate a balance, by this I mean investment on in the Peckham borders and probably an improvement in the parade of local shops at Barry Rd and Forest hill. As a very local resident - without children, I think the academy will be a real positive. I do feel sad that the old building will be demolished, but I also think a site in london such as harris must maximise its potential. Better a new built for purpose building then an old building that can't cope with demands. This is 'progress' and we need a secondary school.
  11. I hear the waverley on the otherside of the Rye is good. Also - Southwark are going to refurb the Public baths - I would wait until then...!
  12. pls no modern art (fart). I liked the old lampost stump, kind of shabby & fun. I saw a pic of the orriginal on this forum and it was pretty tall - i would love to see it replicated.
  13. you are doing asterling job, but speak english man!
  14. CAMBERWELL, BRIXTON, ABBEVILLE RD TO CLAPHAM SOUTH, BACK STRREETS TO WANDSWORTH COMMON, WANDSWORTH BRIDGE, FULHAM BROADWAY, DAWES RD, FULHAM PALACE RD, HAMMERSMITH, M4. 35MINS ON A GOOD DAY
  15. Actually Ednerd - I suspect you make things worse. Patronising from a distance is a really easy way to rub people up the wrong way - particularly people who already feel persecuted or marginalised.
  16. > > Totally agree with most of your points Tom but why > are good dog-owners responsible for "browbeating" > bad dog owners? Are good drivers responsible for > making bad drivers behave? Are decent football > supporters responsible for policing bad ones? > Yes exactly. I know everyone is scared of being shot / stabbed for looking at someone the wrong way, but i make it a point of speaking to anyone for driving like a twat - or on a mobile. I will explain to people very clearly & simply if they are being racist / bullying why this is not acceptable. I will go into the street and stop the local lads charging up and down on their scooters by reasoning with their better judgement - which normally they have. If you are non agressive, clear and reasoned, 99% of the time you get a positive agreement. Agression breeds agression. Most people know when they are being arses, and gently bringing them up on this is not something to be scared of.
  17. Hopefully Shite-stuff will put their lease up for sale too and f*!k off.
  18. This is a tough one. 1. Dogs need to exercise and run around. The owner also has the right to walk with his pet if kept under control (lead not a necessity). 2. They must not encroach on the the general publics / non-dog owning space or safety. 3. Dangerous dogs need to be better controlled / policed. 4. Failing to exercise dogs properly can result in agressive behavior 5. Is keeping a dog in London such a great idea anyway? I see both sides here, but dog owners as a whole need to brow beat their thuggish element into toeing the line to prevent the majority suffering for the minority. Personally, I wouls like to see a license scheme brought into place for all pet ownership...
  19. Yeah - me too and I am on Haymarket. They appeared to come from Westminster / Green Park. Tony Blair must be taking Gordon for a round of golf. Or is there an air show on at Biggin hill or something?
  20. i'm 1/2 irish 1/2 english, the wife is 1/4 french 1/4 swiss/ 1/4 welsh 1/4 english. the english family swear there is some gypo on the irish side but the last one living over there won't confirm or deny...! On the english side we have traced the family history to William de Bulmer who came over as William the Conquerors right hand man, so, regrettably (and much to the wife's amusement), I'm really a frog.
  21. I think any grants should be spent on a wide ranging number of projects that benefit all, not just the young / old / those with families.. I think everyone would appreciate better parks, more trees, cleaner / safer streets, less graffitti (unless on shite-stuff!), better recreation facilities, improved street furniture, traps to catch & impound traffic wardens, even grants to hold free Cinema or theatre events in the park..?! I think it should be used for the benefit & life quality of the people of ED, not to support local business. Although the two do tend to go hand-in-hand. Failing all of the above. Lets just stick it behing the bar at the EDT and have one gawd almighty knees up!
  22. They will take cardboard boxes containing other cardboard.... play them at their own game. No - it probaly won't be recycled, but that's their fault, not yours. BTW - sash window weights are worth a fortune - just had one window reweighted at ?80...
  23. I think they are just trying to be cool, and good luck to them. A few more local jobs, hopefully attracting more shoppers to the area and improving the general facade of LL. You are right about the clothes though.. really cr@p. Ther eis a surf / ski shop in Forest Hill which does some cool stuff. Try there instead if you want to support indies.

  25. For large unwwanted items, like piles of cardboard boxes, fridges, in-laws, etc just call the council, they will quote you a day when they will collect, the eve before put it all out by the bins and hey presto - its all gone.... You lot are a bunch of numpties sometimes. Do you normally have to ask how to wipe your arses too?
