ah ha - it's the Ivanhoe!! Really good choice of beers - might give it a go. Has anyone been - can they recommend it - and do the old regulars of the Ivanhoe still frequent it?

I know where the Clockhouse is - but still no-one has answered tinagwee's question of where Hoopers is. There's a department store called Hoopers in Torquay but I doubt this is the one being touted as a child free pub.

Surely in this day of obesity etc, a leisure centre is of great importance.

My bf and I went for a drink at the CPT before Christmas - as we entered it was just like the scene from 'An American Werewolf in London' AND I have to say I wasn't very impressed with the choice of draft beers. I don't mind 'spit and sawdust' pubs some of the time, but other times it would be nice to be both comfortable and childfree. I guess there's always the Clockhouse, although I feel that it is without atmosphere. Hey ho....

You've obviously had very different service to me. I think I have gone to ED police station about 12 times and have always been treated quickly and politely, indeed kindly. A couple of times when I have been hassled on the bus on the way home I have stayed on until the police station and have never been followed up the stairs. If ED station closes I would have to go (on foot) to Peckham - where they have to deal with real crimes (even if I felt safe enough to walk in that part of Peckham alone at night). The building itself is dreadful, but the police SHOULD provide a service to a community the size of ED

Good luck Paul - for once I look forward to longer queues as they were the proof of fresh fish cooked on order.

Eeek - I spend MY honeymoon in a hotel in the Corso Umberto in Taormina too - and loved every minute of it - I hope you are not my ex-husband in disguise - no - he was a Man U fan!!

Saw the naked cyclists last summer - very brave (although not all were strictly naked)

Slightly off topic here, but I thought one of the nicest things about an internet forum is NOT knowing who people are. I would feel very differently about posting if I kept bumping into people on LL or in the pub (I probably do but don't know it). I like being anonymous. Does anyone else feel the same way? -

Jeez - where did this happen - I'm quite careful about using my phone in the West End but feel free in ED - maybe no more.

I used to work for a private caterers and we did a function which Princess Anne attended. She asked the chef (of Chinese origin) where he came from and he said 'Brighton'. So if it's good enough for Princess Anne.......... -
I agree with the comments made. Once you had to sit and wait for freshly cooked delicious fish and chips - now it comes straight away pre-cooked and is not nearly as good. Maybe they got lots of complaints from people who had to wait without realising that was the mark of freshness.

On-line booking - the BM on-line booking had NO tickets for the Terracotta Army until 6th April - make a telephone call and there are lots of tickets available. I've had the same problem with theatre tickets - on-line the availability is sh1te - make a simple telephone call and you've got seats.

Has anyone else said bendy buses? I hate them - ugly and unsuitable for London - oh AND they are the 'free buses' for those who prefer not to pay!
-
I think there should be choice - some pubs child friendly and some child free - and NOT just the Wetherspoon types - I also think the same about smoking and non-smoking pubs and I am a non-smoker.

Hugh found her in Tesco's and challenged her - she was still buying the cheap sh1te. I don't think anyone was going to change her mind - but at least she didn't spout off that anyone who didn't want to eat cheap chicken should just turn f***ing vegetarian like some of the chaps in the local. Hope HFW life in Axminster is not totally ruined by his efforts and look forward to seeing what Jamie has on offer for us all on Friday.

I've heard them called 'duds'

I remember Pandora's Box - one of THE most horrifying tv programmes I've ever seen. Sadly some people seem to have no feelings for other human beings so to expect them to have feelings for animals is probably an expectation too much. I used to love meat, but have no desire for my excess protein to be the cause of any animals' suffering, so gave it up and now I don't think my stomach would cope with it. I thought Hugh FW did a good job but he will either be preaching to the converted or been seen as a posh git who doesn't understand the budgetary constraints of the normal family.

But NO-ONE likes being stereotyped - it might be one way (a lazy one) to catagorise the world but that doesn't mean it's right. Some stereotypes have been responsible for discrimination until the recent past and probably still is (thinking of the straight woman sacked from a 'gay' nightclub and being called a 'breeder' - well she may well wish to have children and therefore that may well be a stereotyped view of her, but she was awarded several thousand pounds for it) It's not a matter of lightening up or being 'bloody East Dulwich' (what's that meant to mean?) but a desire to move away this kind of stereotyping.
