  1. Such a shame - `I enjoyed G&B as a great addition to LL - now where can I sample some fantastic wines - not to mention job losses - lets hope it can still be resolved.
  2. Avoid eye contact and walk on - I don't think I've ever even spoken to one.
  3. Fish seems to be the memorable meal of choice -is this why Moxon's is always so busy?

Not as bad as I thought it would be seeing that the reviews were really negative - I'll give it another go and watch House (which I videoed in a very 20th century way) tonight.

  6. But Chav - are you really a chav in the way that I think James meant. Chav being someone on benefits with little or no intention of ever getting a job, who thinks that education is waste of time and effort, who drinks and smokes and doesn't care if those actions have any impact on the health or well-being of their children. I know that these are all dreadful Daily Alarmist stereotypes, but as pointed out, stereotypes are only used because there is some truth behind them. Perhaps we need a new shorthand to describe people who know their rights but not their responsibilities and who are net takers from society.
  7. But isn't class more about what you do and who you are now than how you were brought up? My ex husband was brought up in both council accommodation and a council flat and left school with only 5 O'levels, yet by 25 he was a house-owning company director who flew to Australia (with me I add) to watch the Ashes - what class does that make him? On the other hand if I decided it was all too much like hard work to go to office, and decided to go on benefits and sell crack would I still be middle class just because my accent hadn't changed and I still preferred Riesling to Liebfraumilch? By the way apologies to mandyw for many of us hi-jacking the thread about your daughter and her injuries - forum discussions hey....

Same for me - however I just happen to be someone who was brought up in a white-middle class background - it was expected of me to go to Grammar School (I did) - to get a degree (I did) - to enter one of the professions (I did). Yet that makes me a class enemy to some on this board. To be working class, live up to that stereotype - good - to be middle class, live up to that stereotype - bad.

No - not really and I don't have a car and have never owned a car - I agree it is not necessary in London (although if I had several children who went to different schools then I would probably have a different opinion).
  10. Just as a debating point - is there really a need for anyone to own a dog in London?
  11. Are we going to get to the point where the rights of people to own whatever dog they own are going to be pitted against the rights of people (especially those with young children) to walk around without the possible threat of being attacked? With H&S constantly being in the news - are we going to see a similar backlash against dog owners as we have seen against smokers and drinkers? Sorry - bit off topic.
  12. I'm not a terrier loving human or indeed a terrier hating human - all I know is that some dogs are trained by their owners to be killing machines and some dogs are trained to be family loving pets - however ALL dogs can hurt, maim and kill in a given situation.
  13. A little angry dog cannot do nearly as much damage as a large angry dog and I think that is the problem. Some people, whatever you want to call them, have these dogs as a status symbol whilst others have them because they like them, but a large dog can be far stronger than you realise and can and do kill.......
  14. Can't remember their names: An amazing fish restaurant in Lisbon behind a locked wooden door, where you went down some stairs into a huge open space with an atrium - and the wine list was to die for. A vegetarian restaurant in Rome with a 7 course tasting menu - where all the Roman women came in with their fur coats and didn't see the funny side. A little restaurant on the island of Lipari where I had THE most amazing swordfish ravioli (I think it was on a previous thread)
  15. I LOVE Brixton Academy - brilliant atmosphere - good bars to drink before and after the gig in Brixton and then just a short hop on the 37 to get home - what's not to love! (apart from the overpriced beer, sticky carpets and very pushy drug sellers that is!)
  16. Just wanted to add my wishes for your daughter's speedy recovery and to hope that no-one else has to suffer an attack from this particular dog or any other.
  17. Tillie Trotter - did you realise what a bag of worms you were opening with your pleasant sentiment? It would seem that some people could find something to argue about even if they were in a room on their own!
  18. Or is it that St Patrick's day is associated with the vast consumption of alcohol whilst St George's day isn't? Edited to add: Wetherspoons is doing a fish and chips offer today - not quite the same!
  19. And a happy birthday to Shakespeare too!
  20. Saw The Orphanage last week - thought it was good but not a patch on Pan's Labyrinth - agree with the comments about the ghoul with his eyes in his hands - truly memorable!
  21. Will they be offering Cherry Pie?
  22. Just to add to the other comments - I have lived in ED for over 20 years and have never felt anything but safe - although I am not out and about late at night Fridays/Saturdays. I have also never had any trouble with Peckham - if anything it feels safer there than it did about 15 years ago.
  23. But not all of us can take personal phone calls at any time of day - so we ring the doctor to make an appointment when it is possible to call. Back to the sofa analogy - we chose to get sofa delivered - we do NOT chose to be ill.

I've been informed that is the phrase for all these movies that have come out recently that is half horror - i.e the 'gore' and half misogynist 'porn' - Hostel and films like that - also known as 'tortureporn'. However I am willing to be corrected if wrong.
  25. The Pixies were never very good live but I do think Doolittle is an amazing album.
