I think there is some talk of a bandstand in Dulwich Park. Sure I read something somewhere, anyone know? Poormemeoryoldie
  2. Huge competition between the agents for stock. Properties 'valued' at higher and higher prices. Properties don't sell because the asking price is too high. Price reductions to sell, no stock on the market, huge competition between the agents for stock. Properties 'valued' at higher and higher prices. Properties don't sell because the asking price is too high. And so on and so on, been going on for decades.
  3. Fully accept that we need more housing in London but this is the wrong sort of development for the area. We needed a much more 'mixed' scheme. There was scope on this site to provide further retail maybe some small offices and some flats both for social housing and people to 'downsize' to but be able to stay in the area. This is a real opportunity missed by an Estate purely looking for short term gain. The Estate and the schools have been here for hundreds of years and need to take a much longer term view to fulfill their obligations to all of their beneficiary's. It is a very sad and sorry day for Dulwich Village. On the council side this just shows how power should be devolved to people who live and work locally. The decision was made centrally and, as usual, very badly.
  4. No don't think so. I'm told it was five for, one against and two abstentions. Local democracy in action!!

I'm pretty sure it was the late 70's. Nico famously had a sign in the window which said 'We dot serve prawn cocktails or well done steak'
  6. I am pretty certain that they have been banned in Kensington & Chelsea but I don't think it's an easy thing to do. The borough may have to make a case to the Secretary of State for Communities. However, in my experience people who are either selling or letting property often want a board up. Despite the way searching for property has been revolutionised by the internet people still do drive around looking at areas before they even get on the net. For instance for sale boards are particularly helpful in the countryside. They do have a purpose and a use for some. What I think would be more helpful is if the council put forward a voluntary code and got all the agents in the borough to sign up to it. With a particular emphasis on boards being removed with two weeks of the letting or sale of a property. Or if the property comes off the market.
  7. It's also proposed for Dulwich Village where there is unrestricted parking in front of the shops opposite Dulwich Hamlet Junior School. This would reduce the spaces available from about eighteen to eleven if it was introduced and restrict parking to one hour. This will inevitably lead to pressure on surrounding roads for controlled parking. What is in the Village at the moment is not perfect but it does work very well particularly during the school holidays. I understand that the introduction of these measures was included in the control freaks manual (sorry manifesto) at the last council elections. We must be one of the closest places left to central London where people can park for free and without fear of getting a ticket. That has a value of it's own which is much appreciated by elderly and disabled drivers of which there are many both locally and visiting the area. Lordship Lane and the Village benefit hugely from the freedom we enjoy over parking please object to these proposals in the strongest possible terms.
  8. I saw it come through the Village I think it's a dry run for a royal or political visit, usually in the past to the Picture Gallery, I think they've all been there. Thats why they come through the Village and go back a different way to vary the route. But, interestingly (stop yawning at the back there please) they seem to do these things sometimes months in advance of the actual visit.
  9. He was in the Dog one night years & years ago and almost everyone was taking the micky out of the poor chap. (Have I mentioned this before?) Forgetful Oldie.

  11. I think that's the problem, nobody thinks they have any expertise.

Both had very good, for the standard of the time, restaurants and, along with the Steak House in Dulwich Village were where people went if they wanted a meal out. I am pretty certain the the one in the Grove was called the Peacock Room or bar & Restaurant, can't remember. But I also think that gentleman had to wear a jacket and tie to be allowed into the restaurant. I only ate there once with a friends family when I was about 13 or 14 (1971/2) and it was very smart.
  13. There's a bus. Oh, actually there are several, 185, 176, 197, P13, P4. You could walk to Forest Hill (Overground) or even East Dulwich if you fancied the walk. As you say 10/15 mins, not long for a Dulwich Hamlet fan. You can walk to Dulwich Park and the Picture Gallery and the Village (but there's nowhere to go for a beer) or you could have a very nice stroll in the woods (just over the road). Walk to the Horniman. You could go for some Tapas. It's actually not a bad spot and, as far as I know there has been a pub on that site for hundreds of years, its shown on Rocques map of London in 1746 as The Green Man. So a bit of a landmark, lets get it open again!
  14. It seems extraordinary to me that there are three empty pubs on the Dulwich Estate and the question has to asked whether this is the best thing for the Charity as well as the area. I am sure that the various schools must be scratching their heads (so to speak) in wonder. A better location for a hotel would have been the Grove. A Hotel here, on the south Circular strategically placed for everything Dulwich has to offer, and with ample parking and probably the space to extend would, I am sure, have appealed to a major (no pun intended) operator. But, it?s still empty. As is the Half Moon and of course the much missed (despite the fact you could never get a drink, the food was crap and the toilets smelt, yeah, get over it) Dog. The problem comes, that if people stop coming to the area because there?s nowhere for them to go for a drink or to eat (and don?t start me on the Village food offerings, apart from Gails, which is dry of course, and Romeo Jones, don?t know if they have a licence, I must find out), they find other areas and other venues to go to and it will take a great deal of time to get them back. To lose one pub may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose two looks like carelessness but to lose three looks like pure incompetence. The Dulwich Estate Christmas do this year won?t be a piss up in a brewery, I don?t think they?d be able to organise it.

  16. That's probably not the best photo of it and remember how much of our heritage has been lost over the years through demolition of interesting buildings in the area because they weren't fashionable at the time of their demise. The Bluebird Garage in the Kings Road is an excellent example of a site which has been redeveloped taking advantage of it's interesting architectural history. Another one is the Michelin building Sloane Avenue/Fulham Road. I'm not saying the building in Gilkes Place is such an iconic example of 20th Century garage architecture, but surely The Dulwich Estate could think of a more imaginative way of incorporating this building into any redevelopment of this site and help to retain the 20's/30' character in these roads.
  17. I think there's a lot of scope to incorporate the old petrol station into any redevelopment and it really ought to be listed before it is too late. I'm sure I remember my Dad filling up there in the 1960's. My problem is not so much the houses, there were small houses there years ago in Calton Avenue, but the complete lack of imagination and amenity value to the Village and the wider area. The only consultation from the Dulwich Estate has been, 'This is what we are proposing' not a word about 'What do you think we should do here'. Mind you, they wouldn't want anyone to think they were a Charity. Opps, they are!
  18. Well, while I'm on the subject of planning what not Boris Island? I can't quite understand it, put the planes away from the population centre, redevelop Heathrow and Gatwick for housing to fund it all. Perfect. We are also near the Library and the aircraft noise has become noticeably worse in the last year. Mind you, hasn't stopped me getting on a plane. Selfish Oldie.
  19. I am quite sure that this scheme is the wrong one for this, very sensitive, location. There are all sorts of reasons the Dulwich Estate should not be looking at such a short sighted, short term, solution here. Something could be done that would benefit the charities, the Estate and the community. Interestingly there is another proposal in West Dulwich to redevelop the old Dairy site in Croxted Road and part of the parade of shops generally known as Park Hall. This is an imaginative scheme incorporating some new shops with flats above (presumably more affordable than houses) and a new Doctors Surgery. http://planning.lambeth.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=summary&keyVal=MD80P7BO0AO00 It would be far better to have something along these lines in the Village. Perhaps the Estate Governors should heed the words of warning on the stone. ?It is a sport to a Fool to do mischief to Thine own, Wickedness shall correct thee.?
  20. I was living in Court Lane and remember, opps, sorry.
  21. Last time I went, which was admittedly some years ago, I remember my feet sticking to the floor and most of the rest of the audience talking through the film. Vowed I'd never go back which was a pity as it is very convenient compared to Brixton and of course much cheaper.
  22. He went to Wilson's in Camberwell, but a lot of people know that.

  24. Just wondering if, celebrities that they are, will give it a totally unsuitable name. Prince Buddy Bear or along those lines.
