  1. Why? With those lovely 'viaducts' would they need tunnels? And does it still go anywhere now they've knocked a lot of the lovely building down?
  2. Or perhaps someone from Wooster & Stock? V. PG Wodehouse no?
  3. Can't believe theres one between Dulwich and Kings but there might be one between Kings and the Maudsley, although I don't know of one. I'll ask Mrs Oldie, shes bound to know but not here at the moment
  4. Oh God, perhaps we should have a local gallows instead of blue plaques, keep you happy.
  5. Think you got that in one, horrid business.
  6. I was told that Lor Haw Haws mum lived in Alison Grove, just off Dulwich Common (hence his presence at DC) and that her house was bombed and destroyed. Interestingly there are half the road with pre war houses and the other side are all post war. It was a very grisly hanging by all accounts because of a scar he had across his face.
  7. I was born there, 1957, and remember, as a kid, going to A & E must of been early 60's and being kept in. The A & E must have closed in the mid 60's as my brother almost blew his hand off on Nov 5th and we had to go to the A & E in Hermitage Road !!! Upper Norwood, not kings for some reason. Any local NHS historians out there?
  8. The best alcohol free one I've ever tasted was Sam Adams light in the US, not seen it over here. Bottled Budvar takes some beating, if you want a proper drink
  9. Sounds good but I was a bit put off as I thought it was run by Mitchells and Butler that also run the Dog in the Village. I did venture in shortly after it reopened in the hope of it becoming my local again but was unimpresssed by the service. Am I wrong? Is it actually independent or part of another chain?
  10. Abercrombie & Fitch, dark shop with loud disco music, fit in perfectly
  11. No, I think we need a joke shop, although some would say we have plenty of those already.
  12. What about a licenced sex shop? Why bother with food porn when you can have the real thing? I think it'll whip up a lot of interest.
  13. macroban Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Not many people seem to have read and responded to > the original question which said "NEED", not > "want". > How about a good gentlemans outfitters with proper trilby hats for sale? Perhaps some of the local yuppies would smarten up a bit then instead of this shorts and sandals nonsense. I used to shop in Gente in LL and jolly smart I looked too.
  14. I wouldn't mind an M&S, seafood risotto, I was amazed. It's all very well saying there are all the raw ingredients and that M & S is over priced but it is dead convenient. It might actually improve the shopping, er, 'experience' in LL. It could bring people down to LL who don't usually shop there and they might spend more money in the existing shops. No, I don't work for them.
  15. No sadly not but it would be now, it was a very nice cinema, as were the ones in Peckham and Forest Hill. The Greens not doing very well in the opinion polls here perhaps that would make a nice cinema, almost big enough. There used to be a cinema club at St Thomas More (?) hall, is it still going?
  16. East Dulwich Cinema was opposite Goose Green next to Grove Vale School redeveloped for essential worker housing not that long ago, was it London House? before that was some odd Marharisi type temple. I'd like not to queue at Clapham or do the 10.30 am one at the Ritzy. Lets get another cinema.
  17. Not one to forget, but where would you put a dept. store in ED? Foxtons was Woolies once but where else is the space? Along with lots of others I think a master bakers would be good.
  18. Frisco Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > "What, no John Lewis for the poor, Alan?" > > John Lewis shop on Steatham High Road - those were > the days! *Sigh* Wasn't that Pratts?
  19. Think they read it. Plates were hot, lovely starter, main course bit, uh, you know, well wouldn't order it again, but nothing wrong with it. Lovely pint (again). I can't say I see it as a child friendly place but not been there at a weekend, v. busy when I left about 9.30. Worth a trip I'd say and not a bad walk there and back to ED. Food was actually a bit salty and I had to stop at the Dog for a bit of rehydration. Rash getting worse.
  20. Dulwich was once, after Sam Silkin's reign one of the more marginal seats in the UK. I remember Eric Morley he of Miss World fame standing for the tories and only losing by 122 (or something like that) votes. The boundary changes, taking in West Norwood have made it a very very safe Labour seat. Gerrymandering anyone? Even if T*ssa left we'd get another one who won't answer a question. How about UDI for East Dulwich?
  21. I know no one will believe me but when Mrs T turned the Xmas lights on in Dulwich Village there was a drinks reception afterwards at SG Smith (now Dulwich Audi)to which I was invited and I spoke to Denis Thatcher and he said they had spent their first night there the day before, she was PM at the time. So I think they did actually stay there once or twice. I know, you all think I'm a complete fantasist but it's true. I didn't talk to her but she told someone else there that they'd bought there because it was so convenient for Westminster. Well when you've got a police escort I suppose it must be quite quick. Reminds me of Tessa saying when she was first upfor election how quickly she was able to get from Hampstead to Dulwich. Can't remember exactly what time she said but it was something impossible unless you had a helicopter.
  22. No, DHOSA is the Dulwich Hamlet Old Scholars Association which used to meet in the Old Grammar School on the corner of Burbage and Gallery Road. I don't think they exist anymore. It was people who had been to Dulwich Hamlet Junior School in the Village. The Dulwich Sports Club is at the other end of Burbage.
  23. We might even have been there at the same time.
  24. Mr Lui's is still the best although one of the previous owners has Mr Kai at Crystal Palace which is also very good, although I've not been there for a while. Went to Mr Lui's one night with someone with a nut allergy and they could not have been more helpful.
  25. Buzzard, I'll let you know. Um, think I'm coming out in a rash already.
