20 Week Scan: Should we find out!?
jumpinjourno replied to HOMum's topic in The Family Room Discussion
As the 'other half' of the post's author, can I thank you all for your well wishing and your advice. I can confirm that pre-pregnant Jayd5 was adamant that expectant mothers should not find out. But once the decision was ours - things have been a little different. I would say that I am boringly 50-50. I can see the merits in both (many of which as discussed above) and quite typically I am leaving the big decisions to the better half. I think what makes our situation slightly different is that we genuinely have no preference in the sex. We have leading candidates for names of both sexes - though will not be making any final decisions until our special day anyhow. Thanks again for your thoughts, and we'll let you know what happens at the scan... -
Anybody see or get caught up in the traffic congestion on the Lane this morning? Heard reports that there was gridlock for much of the morning in ED because of a burst water main... Info or pics from anybody that was out and about early would be much appreciated. JJ.

(Man with camera at fusion fest today)
jumpinjourno replied to Becky123's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Some pics in the tabloid press are not liked by the subject - but are deemed in the public interest by that publication. Dozens of people come sprawling up and down Lordship Lane and other streets across the capital and the country and are free to go about their merry way. Pictures of Amy Winehouse and public interest are up for debate. Once she started flirting with the paps and using it to aide her fame - all censorship goes out of the window... Max Moseley is very much in the public interest and was caught in a sting... which has since progressed through the court. Pictures of war-torn countries and the facilities of hospitals etc, that are printed demonstrate the severity of the situation and to make sure that the message reaches across the globe of what is going on. I'm sure the victims are not best pleased, but they serve a purpose to the wider world. Not sure young children in a public park having pics taken at waist-height are in the same league of celebrities and millionaires playing Nazi games... Anyway - these pics were not for the press, as the photographer would have immediately explained what he was doing when asked. He may be taking pics for a website (which is not censored and may not have any responsibility) or he may be taking them for personal use. -

Hang on a second... The press photographers have a role and a responsibility that they must adhere to. If somebody doesn't like a picture taken by a member of the press or if it is indecent - they can request that it is deleted or that an explanation is given. I don't think it is the same for a member of the public to walk around taking waist-height snaps. While he is innocent until proven guilty - and the police had the opportunity to persue him for any wrong-doing and decided against it - I think the OP and any concerned parent has the right to know what pictures are taken of their children. > Perhaps there are a number of people who think > that demonising some innocent bloke (and everyone > is innocent until proven guilty), for doing > something that press photographers do every day > (i.e. take photos of people and scenes without > asking permission), is unacceptable. > -
> > It is the 'Southwark 'news so obviously includes > all areas in the Borough whether they interest you > or not! Woah, woah, woah... hold your horses there. A slight distinction is needed here. It is not the 'Southwark' News as in the independant 'Southwark News' that is printed weekly and costs 40p in the newsagent. This is a fantabulous publication full of interesting news, views and interviews as well as valuable information and rather interesting adverts across the borough... (excuse the blatantly obvious plug) While the Southwark Life is the council publication that drops through the letterbox.

New Zebra Crossing on Lordship Lane.
jumpinjourno replied to karter's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The Beard - I quite like that idea... Can't see any suburban area going for building a car park on an existing park or common - although there is the car park by the cafe and the lido there... What capacity would that give us?! But rivalling Bluewater and Lakeside... let's start with Croydon, Bromley and Lewisham first. -
Nice one Angela, and nice one East Dulwich... I thought it was a great afternoon in brilliant sunshine. I brought the Southwark News crew along and all had a thoroughly good day out - and it's good to know that the litter situation is all under conrtol. PS - Look out for a photo spread on Thursday - and if you have any pics that you want to include from your day out at the fair, drop me a line. [email protected]

St George's Day in Dulwich
jumpinjourno replied to jumpinjourno's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Snorky, No barrel, just an attempt to get the good people of East Dulwich into their local newspaper celebrating the national day - but if that is a crime... I will stick to the establishments that I knowm and queue the complaints for us not attending this or that event. All the best -
Anything going on in sunny East Dulwich that you want or think should be snapped and put in your local paper either today or over the weekend - drop me a line or give us a call... We will be out and about for the next few hours soaking up the atmosphere... I hear the EDT and the Vale have some festivities Best wishes, JJ 020 7231 5258 [email protected]

It said... No way to one-way shopping aisles Sainsbury?s have denied plans to install a one-way system for shoppers on its aisles of its Dog Kennel Hill superstore ? blaming an April Fools' prank. Rumours had been circulating across East Dulwich with dozens of locals actually looking forward to the system being introduced to reduce congestion at the end of aisles and in busy sections such as the bakery and the butchers. Suggestions of speed bumps being installed to reduce speeding trolleys and even a congestion charge around the most sought after areas of the East Dulwich store were ruled out by Sainsbury?s. A spokesman said: ?From Sainsbury?s point of view, there is no truth in the rumour. ?When we heard, it did seem like an exaggerated April Fools day gag.?

7-a-side footy @ Dulwich Hamlet
jumpinjourno replied to Gelboy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Just entered a team last week on a Wednesday night but used to play up there for a friend... It is pretty difficult to get a team in, so I would recommend putting your name down anyway while you think it over. 4 divisions from Monday-Thurs and each night has a real mix of teams. Top lot are pretty strong and take it quite serious but as you slump down the bottom - it is more casual and friendly...ish. Pitches are relatively good - but your good ole bog standard astroturf. None of this artificial grass and rubber bits. Refs are okay - normally pretty fair in their uselessness - but are generally a good laugh! Hope that hasnt bored you to death or put you off... Best of luck, JJ -
Sounds terrible, Whereabouts did this happen and was the person okay?

Man Utd vs Spurs on Sunday in Carling Cup final... I have a Spurs chum staying with me for the weekend and wondered where to go for a good atmosphere. Willing to travel outside the postcode, though preferably not?... Any ideas Cheers, JJ

Southwark News - Dulwich Edition
jumpinjourno replied to jumpinjourno's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Guys, Really appreciate the comments and feedback. In terms of wanting the Independent or Guardian - we are more independent than both! We are the only paid-for independent left in London and are owned by two sprightly young chaps that live, work and play in the area. The Southwark News group is a stringent supporter of the buy local, support local in terms of shops, businesses and services... in a similar way to Lordship Lane. Hope you will give it a go, give it a read and help us build a community paper for the Dulwich and Herne Hill area. Best wishes, JJ PS - Keep up the good work on here. -

Anyone seen it?! Lowered flight paths into Heathrow over Dulwich... Blackwater Street binmen... Suspect package exploded at ED Police station... Palmerston Food Review... Goodrich Teacher gets Science award... Herne Hill Velodrome update... Dulwich woman with dangerous dogs handed lifetime ASBO and banned from having animals... History of Brockwell lido... Dulwich Hamlet match report... Thoughts or feedback... Best wishes -
The Southwark News - the independent voice of the borough - (www.southwarknews.co.uk) is launching a Dulwich and Herne Hill edition? ? STARTING TOMORROW!!! It will be a weekly thing from now on. It is in the same form as its parent edition that has been stocked across Southwark for 20 years now ? but has a focus on Dulwich issues. The big Dulwich stories are moved to the front with the odd exclusive? Pick one up in store tomorrow ? or catch one of the team handing them out in selected hotspots around the south of the borough. Have a look, check it out and get back to us with any ideas, stories or comments on what we can do ahead of next week. Best wishes JJ

The Blake mural has been painted over by the Council
jumpinjourno replied to Mark's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The local press are on to it... graffiti cover up is the official line but there are apparent plans to restore the original mural, PM me to air any individual concerns or comments!!! Might have been nice to have discussed this before painting over it? DY -
Services will be reduced from East Dulwich station into London Bridge under the plans that have now been confirmed. From eight trains per hour down to six - but the proposed East London Line expansion phase II should counter-act the 'disbenefits'?! There's more in today's Southwark News?! The ELLE phase II is going to be 'brilliant for the Olympics' in terms of visitors and workers... how many of us travel to the East End now, during the Olympics and after?! JJ

What on earth is going on and how do we tackle this. Woman in the prime of her life stabbed to death around 11pm last night in Bellenden Road area... Somebody must have been up and around about that time - lets pull together and root these people out once and for all... Southwark News has launched its Stop a Stabbing campaign and calls on everybody to do their bit! [Title edited to be less dramatic - The Administrator]

Firstly, the thread was not supposed to be primarily about the individual or the article: more about the best sportspeople to have come out of Dulwich... Secondly, taking boxers like Lennox Lewis out of Canada, sprinters out of Jamaica, footballers out of France, Australia, America and so on provides oppurtunities that are simply not available to them back home. In most cases, like Chris Jordan - currently at Surrey and who also benefitted from a Dulwich College bursary - have every intention of returning home to pass on their talents and provide a good example of the oppurtunities that are available through sport... Take the thread as you will from here... just thought the 'favourite Dulwich sportsman' route could be fun and interesting... Dave Garland, Peter Crouch, Chris Dickson, Kenny Beaney (All former Dulwich Hamlet players) ... any more...

Anybody had a look at it yet?! A full page on the past present and future of the College's sporting hopefuls including the new 14 year-old Barbadian captain Anthony Alleyne... Thoughts here for Dulwich's top sportsmen / women... Nick Hancock (They think it's all over presenter...) lived off of Lordship Lane once upon a time... (Sorry typo... good job I'm no journo...)
