hee hee - I've played that game more than once under the guise of "centurions" (sounds much more manly) I hate to brag but I didn't find it a problem (perhaps because our shots were always measured using camera film cases, not sure if these may be less than a shot?). The last time I completed it we upped the ante by changing every tenth shot for a shot of red wine. The two of the four us competing who didn't complete the challenge made quite a mess mind.

Grove vale / Dog Kennel hill cordoned off this morning
nutty replied to Mark's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I realised who this was this weekend. The guy lived just over the road from me. The most friendly neighbour we have he always had time to stop and chat and was just the sort of guy that made ED the friendly community that makes me love to live here. I'm sure they'll be plenty of other locals who knew him well and will miss him. All my sympathy to Emma and the boys. -
You forgot to put IT as an option you mean?

If it is genuine, the prices are criminal and they need a lesson in manners! ;-)

Thanks Mockney - sounds like a good plan... -
Well - as I said I would normally just tell them to go away. The way this guy spoke to me last night when I questioned him would put me off asking to look at anyone's id more closely!

katietatie - what was the name of the organisation?
-
spooniferous - you may be right - but his reaction only made me trust him less. He made me feel really uncomfortable. I never actually accused him of being dishonest - I just told him i didn't approve of door-to-door selling and he went off on one.

Hi All, Considering shelling our some hard-earned on an SLR. Pretty new to this gig but keen to learn. Currently considering either a Canon 30D or Sony a100. Any views on these or advice on where to get them at the best price? -
Has anyone else been receiving calls from door-to-door salesmen from a (supposedly) homeless persons group? We received our second visit last night. I opened the door the first time when a guy came a couple of weeks ago and politely told him I wasn't interested as I don't agree with door-to-door selling. He moaned a little and then went away. My wife opened the door last night and being a softy (which I love her for) gave the guy 5 mins to listen to his patter. Hearing that buying a dishcloth would keep a young person out or prison she offered to buy one (I suspect partially out of the guilt he was deliberately trying to instill and partially just to get rid of him, as he has gone on about how selling an apron would get him a bonus and make his mum really happy). At that point he announced the cloth was ?7.99!!! Enter me at this point and tell him that we won't be buying anything as I don't agree in door to door selling and apologise for wasting his time. He then proceeded to direct a tirade at me about how he only took this job to stay off the streets as his mum had begged him too and finishing by calling me a tight b*stard. This pretty much demonstrated why I normally don't give these guys even a couple of minutes, as he left feeling me guilty for wasting his time (ridiculous I know) and slightly in fear he would come back later to get some revenge! Is this kind of selling even legal? Or does anyone know if these guys really are linked to a homeless association?? I suspect not but even though I'd like to ask for a better look at their identity card and dial any phone number on it, I suspect that might just open me up to more of the abuse I got on my doorstep last night.

I guess there's two areas The company you work for's business (e.g. Financial, Government) Your job - e.g. Analyst, Support, Salesman etc I'm sure there's some generic list somewhere that insurance companies etc use...

I always hear that ED is full of artists etc but I suspect the balance has swung much more back to the professionals. In fact after discovering the Mockney Piers is a technologist in the financial sector (just call me Sherlock) I started to wonder just what the balance was. Could we use the voting mechanism on the forum to "vote" for our job area (obviously will require some generic job types being options) and get a straw poll what people who live in ED do.... Will obviously be grossly swung by the fact it's carried out on an online forum....

I went in there the other day and the fresh meat and cheese counter appears to have been removed. Does that mean it will not be a "Market Fresh" Scumerfield anymore???

I posted the economist link because I think that quite often we blindly follow what we are told is the right think to do by the likes of Coldplay's Chris Martin. Undoubtedly the article is fairly one sided but it is important to hear both sides as normally all we get is a pop star telling us we are saving the world by drinking it :) I would be a lot happier if we had coffee companies along the lines of the bottled water companies that make no profit at all and pump it all back into supplying clean water to the poorer countries. e.g. http://www.we-are-one.org.uk/ I'm not yet convinced that fairtrade can work in it's current form due to problems mentioned above with monitoring it and the fact western companies still make a lot of money themselves from it which suggests the incentive isn't all altruistic.

Wish I'd read this thread before we went there today. Waited for an hour for our food and it was awful. Why is it so busy - why would anyone go back!?
-
Did anyone read the Economoist article on why Fairtrade really isn't as good an idea as it's exponents may have you believe? Quite a good summary here: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/16/business/16online.html?ex=1323925200&en=f9db09c1f1c20730&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

House Price Inflation Pros and Cons

Well said Alan - It's the equivalent to posting a margin in trading - you can only lose what you put in, fortunately the lender loses the rest! Of course, that's still not pleasant if it's your home... > > There is no fraud . There are rumours about a > bakerloo line extension to Camberwell. I choose to > embrace them. -

Have bought loads of stuff from there. They are always really helpful, have carried big bits of furniture to the car for me, and generally a great shopping experience. Only ever go in at weekends and haven't experienced "weekend staff" mentioned...

Daniel Beddingfield spotted by Budgens

"Re: Daniel Beddingfield spotted by Budgens" Was he asking for spare change? -
I think you are somewhat missing the point of facebook but I can't be bothered to explain why :) I dismissed it myself until I was forced to sign up to see a friends pictures of a weekend away. I suggest trying something first before slating it...

I also detest Foxtons - can we have a EDF boycott on them? I fear the thread about estate agents in ED will become clogged with Foxtons horror stories....
