burglaries in Forest Hill/East Dulwich areas

Whatever the reason is, the problem stays that ED, Honor Oak, Forest Hill, have become hot spots, despite what the statistics say. -

I agree with you. -
I hate the music too, but it is a way to make you going around and shop more. Your mind gets distracted by the music and you forget even why you went into the shop in the first place and buy something else instead.

I think you are right to say that our materialistic culture and society are the major culpits of these things, but it is up to us individually not to let the burglar fencing his stolen goods down the pub, outside the food markets, at the markets, fairs or around where he lives. If this happens, we should inform the police. Unfortunately we let this sort of crime out of control and almost reward it. We have become, as Thomas Hobbs said (and previously Plautus) the wolves to our fellow men. I this the society we all wish to live in the future, where criminals are rewarded and protected, whilst us have to work very hard for all our needs? This is what is happening. -
what about the other side of Dulwich? West Dulwich. There must be more on that side?

I hope you have not lost a lot as we did. Our windows had locks as well and were alarmed. 3-4 weeks later, still no news from police and other involved organisations I was grilled by the insurance loss adjusters recently as if I were the criminal who is trying to take their money. It was very stressful. It is not just the burglary which affects your life, but all the rest as well. I am still terrified that they can come back. Our windows double glazing company told us that our glass was unbreakable and a deterrent to intruders (they still advertised this on their Website. We got a nasty reply from them, when we complained recently. Could this person seen in Oglander/ Bellenden Road be the same who has been targetting other houses in Dulwich, Honor Oak and Forest Hill.? Can anybody write to their councillors in order to stop this constant campaign on television, newspapers and other sort of media, of "gold for cash" "trade in gold" etc.? It is because of this constant advertising that thieves are breaking in people homes. -
Budget stores look horrible in UK, but in Germany/France, Greece stores, like Aldi, Lidl, Netto, are well kept outside and inside and it is a pleasure to shop. Overseas these shops, which in UK are considered discount stores, are at the same level as Carrefour and AUCHAN. I have been to some during holidays and have found they are kept in better conditions than their correspondent in UK. Some of their food are better quality than the one sold in other major stores in UK.

I say southwark - fortnightly bin collections
concita replied to Terry Thomas esq's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
In other european countries, rubbish is collected every day, why is so different in UK? Also the recycling bins are more attractive, ours are an eye sore. -

If anybody has noticed anything suspicious in the upper side of Lordship Lane, close to Horniman/Underhill, Wood Vale,Langton Rise ie. people running with a small piece of furniture in their hands, between 30 September and 10th october 2010, please advise the crime management department at lewisham police station. If you have found a piece of furniture thrown into your back garden in the area, please advise police. Thank you Concita -
Excuse my ignorance but what other festivals? Few years ago, no shop was allowed to sell fireworks before November.
-
Is it necessary for shops to sell fireworks before the 5th November? Despite being very expensive, they are now used more frequently.

It has, in fact, but we lost the excess on it, so it is still an insult. -
I was burglared recently at the beginning of October. They smashed an entire double glazed panel to peices, as if a bomb exploded and all the strip and window bars (georgian type of window). they stole several items of great sentimental and monetary value. police came to secure the window and we were put a corrugated steel panel by the damage and control team, for which we had to pay quite a bit of money. Insult to injury. No one knows who did it> We are on the border between ED, Forest Hill and Peckham, Honor Oak (horniman area).

We will be updating the alarm system with cctv camera at front and back and maybe put guard bars at the back. We will connect the alarm to police station. It will cost us a fortune. We were thinking to put roller shutters as they do on the continent, if we are allowed, but to what pro? All the precious staff has now gone. Overseas people still get robbed. However nothing will stop these scumbags to break in and ruin your life. In my case, there might be women as well in the group breaking in. They took everything which was nice and apart expensive items of great sentimental value, also women belts, empty women handbags, women pursues, religious medals etc. Men are not that selective. They just go for the most expensive things they know they can fence/dispose quickly. It was because they were disturbed by some neighbours running in the drive and checking the top windows, that they rushed the job and ran away as quick as possible, otherwise my whole house would have been thrashed and soiled. -

Some of our neighbours. No I do not expect my neighbours to monitor my alarm system. We look after each other house if someone is away for some reason or another. If the alarm goes off, the neighbours who has the keys, check that nothign is suspicious or call the police in case there is a problem. I have looked after other people house when they were on holidays, ensure the post was put away from the front porch, their dustbins moved. Unfortunately on the day my burglary happened, the neighbours did not do all that. -

I understand you and I am glad you are very committed,James, but the government needs to change the laws to protect ordinary citizens, not criminals. It seems that they get away with murder. All the loops must be closed. Gangs known to police in the area, must be monitored. The laws are at the moment too soft toward criminals. There shoudl be zero tolerance. -

Also do not forget that the process of dealing with the insurers in the case of a burglar is very painful. At the end they almost see you as the crook, not the one who has performed the burglary. -

No the alarm was not connected to the police station but we have had a good neighbours network in the area and if someone alarm went off, neighbours would check, especially those ones who had our keys. However, on the day, they were out to work. The type of alarm you have, we were told is only for business, We were told that police comes to your rescue/alarm call only if it is for business. -

We have double door at the front f the house a porch, locked up with 7 security locks and the front door. Burglars do not use the front doors, they use the back doors and windows on the garden side where they are not seen. Our back doors and gardens were well secure and the breakage itself would have set the alarm. Our neighbours heard the alar and even went to see from the fence, but the broken panel was a lateral one and not very visible so they thought it was a fault and did not call the police. Burglars are getting very skilled at breaking alarm systems and any other security equipment sold on the UK market. Only if they are punished severely, the trend can go down. -

they did not evade the movements of the sensors because the alarm went off straight away. They were quite fast to get through upstairs where they know they could find something. The alarm went on for ages. -

I don't think you understand the point. The area is not safe and we should always be aware of these events, if we want to win our fight against crime, even if it does not touch us personally. Until it does not happen to you, you cannot understand the anguish people go through. I lived in areas where you could leave your door open without any problems, areas where you had to watch your handbags all the time. Nothing like this ever happened. It is true, crimes happen all over the world, but outside UK they are penalized, not rewarded.
