We saw a police van outside a house at the end of Underhill Road. Anything happened that way?

Police came to my home and said there have been few cases going on. Also a month before they distributed a leaflet warning people.I am not on defensive, I am tired to be verbally attacked, whilst my good intention was just to say be careful, nothing else, in view that the forum is followed by many people. Regarding the statistics, I generalized by saying that often they can be manipulated, I did not say the ones generated by police are manipulated. -

I have no intention to strike fear in everybody. My intention was to inform that this is going on. Other came up with statistics etc..and i have done my searching on that. I do not intented to be abused either by people whose opinion is different from mine and accuse me of hysteria. I thought this was a democratic forum where people speak in a civilized way! I do not intend to get involved in any argument whatsoever. Some people have reported the same crime recently as well as I did, some in my thread some in others. -

Pawnbrokers know by experience what happens in the area. Statistics are often manipulated figures to cover up a problem. If items were stolen from family members or friends, do you think pawnbrokers would bother to call the police and have these people arrested? They normally call the police in case they suspect items stolen through robberies and house burglaries. I don't want to demonstrate anything, I only want to say it is something going on in the area. ED and FH are more affluent areas than they used to be and therefore watch out. The way you do it, whether with CCTV camera or other gadgets is up to individuals and circumstances. Other crimes reported in this forum, are showing that the area is becoming rather hot. -
I am so sorry to hear of this and glad that your dog did his job. We were not so lucky.

Hi James, I have been around Forest Hill, Sydenham and Penge pawnbrokers/scrap for gold shops etc.. this weekend and have asked if the owners have seen any increase in burglary in the the area and if anybody gets caught by selling stolen goods to them. They told me the trend is very high at the moment. Police launched "Operation Bumblebee" months ago to educate people to prevent this sort of crime. They would not have done so, if the problem did not exist. Unfortunately, until it does not happen to us individually, we do not want to know of it. -

No place is scaring to live in because of burglars. I have lived in the area for 32 years. It is a beautiful area, with many parks and historical roads. However you have to remember that there is also crime going on and if is going up, we have to tackle it somehow. -

I am sorry if it is becoming boring for you. You don't have to read it if you wish. You can talk about something else any time. Some forums have a dedicated crime cascade section where all the crimes in a particular area are reported. People take then the issues up with police at the local meetings. -
Good idea, we hope all other shops do the same.

I have checked other neighbour websites and they are all reporting crimes. We just have to be on the alert continuously, especially now that we are going to celebrate the 5th Nov with fireworks. We are out, they are in. It is also interesting to read the booklet issued by police on burglary prevention. There are good advices, however, we did almost everything listed in that booklet, plus we recommended our neighbours to keep an eye. -

drops of help? (anyone know of this company/charity?)
concita replied to underhillroad's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
that's why good causes never receive the right money. This sort of charity is OK for this country, but overseas, people do help local people and do not mind if they see others walking in the same street with their clothes on. Charities in this country are already supported by tax payers, by the national lottery, raffles etcc... As you said there are many charity workers, but there are also many highly paid directors, who would not give a penny of their salary to support the charity they represent. It is certainly not a good thing. -

money received from sale of clothes do not go always to the charity you donate to. They are used to pay high wages for their directors and managers. Yes mine was a lovely coat and I would have been happier if I saw it on someone who was poor, not in a a wealthy area for the rich. It certainly was not sold it in Sydenham where there are many unemployed people. Like everybody else, I did believe in by giving to charities shops, you help other poor in the area. After what I learnt and seen, I have become sceptical. Charity begins at home. If you know someone in need, help them directly. If the charity shops want to help poor people in the area, those one who cannot afford to buy clothes, then they should keep prices down, not selling more than their second hand value. -

things you give away for charity in this country are not sold for charity but for profit by the so called charity shops. if your goods are not designer clothes or expensive items, they are thrown away in the rubbish bins. Those expensive items are sold at exhorbitant prices which none of the poor in England can afford anyway. Primark is much cheaper for them and items are new. When I was living overseas I learnt that USA charity organisations used to sell bales and bales of clothing in harbours, where market sellers/mafia go early in the morning bidding. If they are lucky they get good clothes which they can sell at good prices at the local market, otherwise, they collect buttons, zips and whatever is recyclable and sell separately. The clothes do not go to the poor. In my opinion, if you wish to do charity and know people who are in needs, help them directly. Once I had a beautiful coat, which I gave it away at a charity shop in Sydenham. I found the same coat (still having the same overseas dry cleaner badge inside) in a charity shop in Sloane Square, sold for ?85. That coat cost me much, much less. If I needed to buy again that coat, I could not have afforded it myself. Do you call this charity? -

Yes they were, they helped themselves to a lot of stuff, including a piece of the side table where things were locked in We searched all over ED and Forest Hill to find that piece of furniture without success. Unfortunately the neighbours due to some plants on the pation in front of the broken panel, and the light on the day, they could not see the broken glass panel. It was a well done job. -

We do need to report each case to police, but also to the community where we live in. We do need to say this is what has happened to me today because tomorrow it can happen to you too. Be vigilant. Don't leave things around the house, ie car keys, house keys and valuables, especially near your bedside table. If you go away, be careful where you park at airports. A neighbour went away for a week, parked his car at Stanstead airport and on his return found his house broken into. Coincidence or a ring of international criminals getting information on passengers, from dishonest employees at these airport car parking places? Or a gang of criminals in the area watching you at all time? I wish google street view could be useful in this respect! -

I understand what you mean. However, I must say that on another occasion, when my husband and I were attacked outside our home in the drive by "hoodies" (who tried to steal our car and stab my husband), the police came in less than 5 minutes and were very good with us. Neighbours who heard me screaming out of my mind, came to our help and the "hoodies" ran away. When we were burgled recently, my neighbours who saw the broken window from his garden, said that when they called the police, they had an immediate response. -

The only reson why I wrote about my experience was to make people aware that there is either an international ring operating in the area or local opportunists, going around our roads and therefore to be vigilant, not paranoid. Don't think, it will never happen to me, because it can, whether you live in a council estate or in a wealthy road. If my neighbours called the police straight away that day, the burglars would have now been arrested. If you notice people selling stolen goods in pubs, markets, outside supermarkets, remember you can use the anonymous crimestoppers line to report them. -

Drug is another reason too, but if you are on drugs, you are not so sophisticate in choosing the goods. -
