Cannaries are great as long as you rent up in the hills and hire a car. The playas are full of "los frey bentos" sunning their all day full english breakfast beer bellies. Most of the costal resorts are awful, a complete contrast with the interior. Tenerife and Gran Can have glorious forest and mountains to explore. The winter weather is good in Tenerife, but be warned, don't stay on the north coast unless you love cold fog! Cheap petrol and tax free shopping on electricals and cameras. Madeira is very small, twee and full of old golfing farts and has an excessive number of (single lane) road tunnels. Nice drives up in the mountains but beware of local drivers who are utterly leathal. There are no beaches at all, just wild breakers and razor sharp rocks The upside is that there is great food to be had in old funchal. I also think it may be the hub of the world bobble-hat industry! Winter sun no where near as good as Canaries
