Yes I did wonder what would happen. We filled it in independently but turns out we both chose the same options! I don't suppose it matters in that case. If this was actual criminality then I would agree with you. It's hardly larceny on the part of the council though, they don't make much if any money out of these by all accounts. I'm not a fan of CPZ but, extending your analogy, since the end of Dec my house is getting broken into every day and that is surely not fair or reasonable. If your stand against the council extends to revoking all current CPZs then I'd be behind it, but don't wish to be a martyr for the cause. Hi Eileen, yes I put the 2 hour option. I think that is the option that minimises all the bad things about the CPZ. We moved from Amott about 6 month ago, rarely had trouble parking there. We were there for 8 years and it did get worse over that time though, but it was rarely more than just a short walk up amott or gowlett; never any further. I think you will find that if your street was not included in the CPZ and most others were then you would have so much displacement that you'd never be able to park. As previously stated I don't like the idea of it in general, and if you'd asked me before the implementation of zone Q (DKH) I would have said no to our own one. However even if we somehow got Copleston added to zone Q, then the next street along would want adding, then the one next to that etc due to displacement. Southwark School Street Closure Scheme
micromacromonkey replied to Passiflora's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Interesting, wasn't aware of this. Good idea though. I would gues it very much depends on which street the school is on though; not sure they will close bellenden rd for Belham school for example. Even though people drive down it fast and often don't stop at the zebra crossing. -
I am glad this thread has been reopened since yesterday/today have demonstrated the stark differences that have arisen between weekends and weekdays on Copleston/Danby/Avondale sinch th eDog Kennel Hill zone came in. Parking dead easy yesterday (apart from just around lunchtime with both churches full so that's to be expected). Today I had a terminal bike failure on the way to work so my wife came to pick me up in the car, 10 mins later she went round the avondale/copleston/danby block 3 times until she could find a spot. This is clearly either commuters, or DKH CPZ residents who don't wish to pay for their own zone. Either way it is a bit silly. It's not the lack of parking per se (We cycle every day and could prob manage without the car really) but rather the fact that non-residents are using the facilities (and importing the pollution) whereas we cannot. My wife and I have both filled inthe consultation and said that unfortunately we will have to say Yes to the CPZ to address the above issues. In addition we have both said No to the 'parklets'. I work in Hammersmith where they have some setup in a business/high street area and they get so little use even in that context that I can't see that they will offer anything in our area.

How do we get Copleston Road added to this CPZ? Can't park anywhere now.

Interestingly they are doing the same to Danby st and Avondale Rise this week also. Did they have a bunch of cash left over for this financial year that needed spending? -

We lived opposite a pub until just recently, and occasionally the noise was annoying. My daughter moved into the front room so we installed secondary glazing there. Along with the existing double glazing it made the room remarkably quiet. Ideally you want 100mm+ gap between the secondary glazing and the outer double glazed unit (but anything is better than nothing). Quite a big window, cost about ?400 as I recall.

Assistance re. rear extension and house renovation
micromacromonkey replied to FNB's topic in The Lounge
If you just want a rear extension (3m or smaller) and loft conversion (< 25 cubic metres), those things may well fall under permitted development so full planning not required. For our old house we got our loft conversion done by a loft conversion specialist under permitted development (they had an architectural draughtsman who did the drawings). 3 years later at the same house we got a local builder to build the rear extension (essentially a 3m deep box), he did it all from his head without plans and was excellent. Building regs signoff was fine, and we have since sold that house so clearly no problems with permitted development as far as the solicitors go. An architect will help you to do a lot more stuff and provide a coherent picture, and could be really useful for contentious planning issues. They will also manage tendering for the work, project management etc, and are insured should things go wrong. For our new place we've gone with an architect because it requires planning and it's just too much for us to think about managing ourselves. An architect can also just do you some plans and let you get on with it, or just get it through planning but let you manage your own build, that is another option. They all do free consultations though, so you may as well have a chat with one or two. -
Had a good laugh at the reasons against in that biker article. Contradictory nonsense. If you have a dirty polluting motorbike, replace it with a clean one, or perhaps ditch the engine completely and pedal. I live in the ULEZ zone and wholeheartedly support it, even though I'll probably need to sell my diesel car.

Are houses selling around here at all?
micromacromonkey replied to James's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
We just exchanged on our house, for 15% less than we almost sold for 18 months ago. That time we had 2 viewings, this time we had over 50. One lesson you learn is that it is only worth what someone will pay for it, not what you think it is worth. I am reminded of this every time I get a rightmove notification about another 3 bed terrace for 1.2 million quid. You aren't going to get an extra 200 grand just because the walls are tastefully done in Farrow and Ball Mouse's Arsehole grey or whatever it's called. -

Presumably this only applies to those cars where you have set it up to open automatically if you are nearby? I thought that was a bit of a risk, so that facility is turned off in my car's settings. I don't know whether the key is still broadcasting, but I can't see that it would make a difference since the car is set to ignore the key unless a button is pressed. I would say the way to avoid this is to turn off the feature in the car, and press the button yourself when you want to unlock the car. -
Changes to your train times from Monday

It's a very expensive problem to solve, even though there is quite a bit of spare railway land round there. -
Changes to your train times from Monday
micromacromonkey replied to A Cinderella Line's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Capacity in South London tends to be limited by a small number of pinch points such as Herne Hill where lines cross over each other on the flat (i.e. no bridges or flyovers). The lines themselves could take more traffic, and the terminus stations also have some extra capacity to turn these trains around, if only they could untangle the lines. Look at how much money has been spent on the Bermondsey Dive-under for Thameslink which does exactly this - grade separates the Thameslink trains (Brighton main line) from the Charing Cross ones so that they can have a clear route into London Bridge and the Thameslink core. Here is a good explanation of the timetable changes: https://www.londonreconnections.com/2018/the-cicadas-take-flight-explaining-the-may-timetable-changes/ -

Upland Road to Green Park commute
micromacromonkey replied to zoester's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Depending on where you are in Green Park area, it's about a 20 min walk from Victoria. On the odd occasion I'm not on the bike I get the train from PR to Vic and walk to Knightsbridge, which is about the same distance from vic station. Just cycle though, it's miles better for you and you will become as smug as the rest of us. -

Actually Harry did serve on the front line for his country, so that certainly makes him the most deserving member of his parasitic family. -
So Chener Books is OK then? I have only ever been in once, on christmas eve about 6 years ago looking for some last minute gifts. While I was browsing the person behind the till was castigating some poor soul for attempting to return a book, something along the lines of 'how dare you come in here and try to return a book on christmas eve!'. More Black Books than Chener Books. I haven't returned since.
