  1. I have a trimetal bike shed, similar in construction to the Asgard one. First things first: if thieves want it enough they will break into it, whatever it's made from. Second, they are built to a budget and to reinforce all the possible areas of entry it going to make it expensive and heavy and people won't buy it. I have reinforced mine with wooden beams (40x70mm ish) bolted along appropriate places inside, for example along the edges of doors. I have also sacked off the stock padlock and fittings and attached a thick hasp, with bolts right through the 40mm thick timber behind it. I have fitted a serious padlock (see below) to this, which indicates to thieves that this is going to be more effort than it is worth and suggests to try next door. Someone has tried to crowbar it over the last 3 years but failed due to the wood behind it. https://www.lockshop-warehouse.co.uk/acatalog/squire-ss65cs-stormproof-padlock.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIrOi9t4Xh6wIVWfhRCh3wcAKUEAAYASAAEgItSPD_BwE If you want proper reassurance you can also put a ground anchor inside, and chain the bike to that also, using a proper chain. Depending on how expensive your bike is you could look at getting a sold secure gold rated chain (used for motorbikes) which is thick enough to defeat any bolt cutters. get the padlock for this keyed alike with the one for the box, to save you hassle. This will stay inside the box usually; I had to take mine to ED leisure centre to lock my bike up when I lost the key for my d-lock, got a few funny looks as the chain weighs more than 10kg!
  2. We lived on Amott for 8 years and it has always been that way. Some people are just arseholes when they get behind the wheel. I agree it should hove speed bumps in.
  3. I have just driven down Grove Vale for the first time since these restrictions were put in place, from Quorn road right down to the harvester junction. Traffic is very slow and it was a frustrating experience. And that's great, because my journey was totally unnecessary (one household member was in a hurry thought it would be quicker to drive than cycle). Hopefully all the other people in the traffic will feel the same way and quit labouring under the misapprehension that they have a right to be able to drive their car unimpeded wherever they like.
  4. It is legal to shoot foxes in urban areas, I think you need a permit though. A friend had to do it to get rid of an issue in their garden. AFAIK poisoning is illegal and it's certainly cruel. I could do with reducing the number of foxes using our garden as a toilet, but it's not clear how effective killing them is since there are loads of them all over the place and some will come to take over their vacant territory. A better solution for me would be to find the arsehole who feeds them cat food (the foxes mysteriously drag the boxes into our garden). I would think shooting this person would be a better alternative.

I disagree, this is EXACTLY the excuse we need to get some proper transport policy changes done under the umbrella/smokescreen of coronavirus. These changes need to overall be a modal shift to walking and cycling. In your case these are not directly aimed at you obviously, but will make the roads clearer for those like you who do need to use a car. (Although you should go to a bike shop and give an e-bike a try, you'd be amazed how much fun they are and plenty powerful enough to deal with the hills round here.) Up until now road use has been increasing steadily and policy has been to keep throwing money at road schemes just to keep our heads above water supporting this transport mode. Powerful lobbying interests have prevented successive governments having the balls to do anything about it. I sincerely hope that this crisis can become a turning point, and that we have reached peak car usage. I am out cycling every couple of days and whenever I cross over the M25 in Kent it is deserted. This, along with the astonishing figures on short-term reduction in pollution, gives a window into what the future could look like. It enables a narrative that policymakers can use to effect the shift in policy away from further road mega-projects to instead spend the money spent on other forms of transport.
  6. I was also wondering about the bricks. You can buy new bricks that try to look 'reclaimed' by having white and reddish paint splodges on them. I assume you're only supposed to use those sparingly though; I wondered if someone had got a bit carried away and made an entire wall out of them.
  7. If you fall out of a tree and break your legs don't come running to me. dbboy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > When you eventually catch CV 19, can't breath and > subsequently die, don't moan, because you didn't > follow the guidance.
  8. I disagree :) Let's try and work out which risks are worth worrying about rather than assigning equal probability and impact to all risks.

  11. Below is a link to an excellent stats-based coronavirus post. Generally it's an excellent article, and specifically (near halfway) it addresses mortality/fatality rates in the context of the points raised above, explaining how these can be extrapolated to give a meaningful figure. https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavirus-act-today-or-people-will-die-f4d3d9cd99ca
  12. FFS I finally got the website to accept my details and paid for the year's permit, only to find it wasn't necessary (just yet). I wonder if we'll get the unused days refunded/added on aat the end? Unlikely I guess as all parking companies are simply the worst kind of arseholes.

Avoid.
  15. Who panic bought all the Shreddies? I'll have to have something else for breakfast now.
  16. Also failed to recognise me despite me adding my council tax account number. I work in IT, specifically in managing identity, and this pisspoor implementation really annoys me. Councils are absolutely dreadful at this sort of thing. I'd be very careful about uploading any official documents to their cowboy parking partners, I'd advise blanking out any info that isn't absolutely necessary before you scan something. DEFINITELY don't upload your driving licence or a bank statement.
  17. I'm looking forward to the day the new owners discover this thread about their houses. I cannot stand pastiche architecture, particularly 'Victorian style' (although as it happens there is quite a nicely done terrace at the bottom of Bromar road). These Dunstan's houses have taken all the worst elements of fake Victorian (the doors!), fake 1930s (the awful bays) and added out-of-place modern features (upstairs windows) then wrapped it all in a 1990s brick. I'm guessing they completely fail to meet RIBA guidelines for minimum indoor and outdoor space and really should be razed to the ground, with all involved (from developer and architect, to builder, to Southwark planners) receiving a firm kick in the nuts.

  19. I wonder whether the actual restrictions are needed at all. Our road has emptied out just with the dotted lines being there; the perennial commuters and overspill from zone Q have probably decided not to risk it! Great nudge tactic.
  20. yes, dropping off your kids at school is a valid use of parking spaces surely. (Notwithstanding the fact that you shouldn't be using the car for that sort of journey.)
  21. good spot! I wish people would do this more. My car did 72k miles in 3 years before I bought it, zero blemishes (the guy liven in the west country). In 5 years and 10k miles since then it's got about 10 dents and scrapes on it, all due to selfish people managing to get away with it.
  22. Brightness can definitely be managed. You are almost certainly stuck with the colour though, as most 'white' LEDs are actually blue ones with phosphor in the plastic lens that absorbs some of the blue light and emits yellow instead. So the warmth/coldness of the LED is actually a balance between the blue and the yellow. This phosphor content(and hence blue/yellow ratio) is already baked in at manufacturing time so can't be altered. It's also possible to make white LEDs from red, green and blue ones mixed together but this is more expensive and I have never seen street lights use this method.

This CPZ should have gone in the same time > as the Champion Hill CPZ, was always obvious there > would be huge displacement. Next to my house there is a dropped kerb. Mysteriously they have painted the white dashed lines right up to one edge of it but have left the 2m (or however much it is) on the other side for double yellows. The propspective 2m of double yellows are directly outside my house where I'd quite like to park :D I don't want to ask them to remove them in case they instead decide to add double yellows to the other side also, thereby nicking another parking space! Hopefully it stops all the tightwads in zone Q from leaving their car in my street now :)
  24. In the meantime get a blackout curtain. You can get ones which stick to your window with suckers, or replace an existing blind. We got some for the kids' room and ended up using them ourselves.
  25. Jump over the fence, neck some acid and roll around naked in the mud in front of the cookery demo. Great festival memories.
