  1. I was living through it, and heard what the shopkeepers said. It's not fair to blame the closures on,in effect, old fashioned attitiudes/marketing. Small shopkeepers can't compete with the big boys relationship with the wholesalers/manufacturers if they're trying to sell the same type of goods. Yes, if you see a niche, give your shop a silly name and charge twice as much, and hope for the best. Excellent retail strategy Lynne
  2. So it was entirely co-incidental that nearly all the food shops closed after Sainsburys opened? I think not Lynne
  3. I was here when Sainsburys opened and yes, it did have a bad impact on local traders. Butchers, greengrocers, bakers all closed. We've only got the niche shops because ED has become a prosperous area. If this hadn't happened, we'd be looking at a sea of charity and pound shops Lynne
  4. Probably to deal with the complainants (quite a few of them). ?1 is high To be fair to the organisers, if people don't come to sell, there isn't going to be much stuff to buy. Lynne
  5. Hi. We had underpinning years ago and our insurance crept up and up, till last year, it got ridiculous. I thought that no-one else would insure us, that being the case years ago. But then I saw an article in the paper saying that things had changed. So I contacted Aviva. We had to get a survey done and submit it to them. This cost us about ?400 but we more than saved this on one years' new insurance costs. Lynne
  6. That depends. If you have "grounds" or "the estate", rather than gardens, obviously not Lynnea
  7. How much does CCTV cost? Worlingham/crawthew gets a lot of fly tipping too. (And while I'm ranting, yes, I do include the "gentry" who think they're too grand to have dustbins in their newly landscaped in their gardens and leave all their dustbins/builders rubble on the pavements. What do us peasants matter? Lynne
  8. They're back at the top of Worlingham Rd. Saw lots on a skip on Crawthew a few weeks ago, so the problem hasn't gone away Lynne
  9. I have told him again, not quite as politely as last time. Again, he lowered the noise for a while. Of course, if I could get the noise people out, there would be a quiet period! I could pop round and ask him to turn it up very loudly just as the council people knock on my door! Lynne
  10. Between Goose green and NorthX Lynne
  11. Can anyone tell me what the Council curently does about noice nuisance? Our neigbhour has installed 5 speakers and his stereo in his back garden and sits in the house (presumably to keep cool )and plays music very loudly all afternoon (though not late, to be fair). It's driving me nuts and I keep looking at our garden hose thoughtfully. I have asked him once politely to turn it down, which worked for about an hour. Lynne
  12. Poor driver, as well Lynne
  13. Pity we have to wait for a few years. Are Estate sgents the only ones who can pay the going rates for shops? James, let us know, please And yes, I agree with the description of Toptree. All shops create employment lynne
  14. I leave mine in the Station I reguarly use in Kent, where there's a constant change-over of donated books. I'm so grateful to have something to read when the train is late/cancelled yet again that I happily take my discards along Lynne
  15. So none of you will mind when you're caught out by illegal traders? Not saying that this applies here but there are licencing rules for the public's protection. Glad to see everyone in ED is so trusting that they will believe any company they see around Anyone want to by a nice bridge I happen to have for sale in cenatral london? Lynne
  16. Judging by the number of people clutching A-Zs and estate agents brochures looking lost around Lordship Lane, a lot of roads are sort after. Lynne
  17. just a personal view, but I'd rather have had the money that was spent on automatic doors etc spent on staff Lynne
  18. I was there yesteday, very noisy with people sitting in the aisles so you couldn't get at the shelves. Apart from stopping borrowers finding books, surely this is against Health and Safety? Was in my day. And yes, they're back to their old practices of having more books piled up that on the shelves. 5 trollies full of books, at least 4 bins overflowing and books just piled up around the terminals. If we can't find the books, we can't borrow them!!! And sorry to hear about the troubles. Being a librarian is not the nice quiet job you see on the TV. It's easier to control if you don't let the situations develop, may I say Lynne
  19. Contact Council. if it'd professional builders they're limited in their hours - no Saturday afternoons and I think not Sundays. Lynne
  20. Lewisham used to, subject to approval Lambeth might too Lynne.
  21. I agree, nice and light and easy to use. But I can't see that the actual stock, which is after all why we go, has improved Lynne
  22. Lynne

    Car Boot Sale?

One on Sunday mornings behind Dulwich Hamlet ground. Large expensive one in battersea Sunday afternoons Lynne. St John's school having one on Saturday 23rd lynne
  23. What's going to happen to Runcents? Lynne
  24. I've never heard that asking for information is axe-grinding. Who was responsible for the Freedom of Information Act? The Royal Society of Axe sharpeners and chopper makers? Lynne
  25. Perhaps they will be able to spend some time actually shelving the returned books. My record is 7 trollies full, almost as many as actually on the shelves Lynne
