  1. Dulwich Books have a week of writing workshops coming up in October, some for adults and some for children. Ok, that's West not East Dulwich, but it's only a short walk away, or a trip on the P13. www.dulwichbooks.co.uk
  2. Another dairy... I copied this photo from the web a while back, found it interesting as it would have been close to where I live. Sorry about the quality, but you can see that the address is 6 Goodrich Road. Annie
  3. Probably a bit further away than you mean, but the best one I've been to as a buyer was at Hayes Street Farm near Bromley. The day we went (admittedly this was last year) it was huge. They have a couple a month, the dates are on their website and on www.interestingevents.co.uk and I think they also advertise it in the South London Press.
  4. I must have missed this back in April when the thread started, thanks lepetitecho for bringing it up to the top again. This would be great, and like Sue I would be delighted if allotments could be included. Last time I looked I couldn't find a local (or not so local) allotments that was even accepting people onto their waiting list.
  5. Ha ha, I wish! And we haven't bought/used any new products ourselves lately. Smell still here but no worse, if it goes of its own accord I'll assume it was as MrsMc suggests, that maybe someone has put something down the drain that's wafted up into ours, and it's just a coincidence that a mysterious smell has also appeared the other side of ED. 6. Ours is definitely inside the house. And stronger towards floor level. Getting a bit less now, but still disturbing and a little eye-watering, though that symptom may be psychological.
  7. We've had a similar problem for the last couple of days. Like you we thought we'd overturned a cleaning product, but couldn't find anything. We're a long way from you, Landcroft Road, but it's a bit of a coincidence. Seems less strong this morning, maybe because we're leaving internal doors open to try to disperse it, or maybe we're just getting used to it! Anyone else...?
  8. Good idea Computedshorty. Freddy10, the bookshop Computedshorty means in Crystal Palace is The Crow on the Hill. They have a website you could google. 9. Yes we've been wondering about the brown paper sacks that you get from the library etc for garden waste. Can see no mention of them on the leaflet we've received? They're ideal when you've no room for your own compost bin, we can keep a supply folded up in a cupboard until we need them rather than having a large garden waste bin sitting outside all the time?

Yes, my first thought was the Scouts jumble sales! Also I see on the Workshop Sale website they say 'We have already booked the (Thomas More) hall for the 2011 Workshop Sale - put 3rd December in your diary now.' Maybe the hall will still be available for these and other weekend events? Let's hope so.
  11. Thanks very much everyone for your advice and comments. Agree with paramount, don't think they're honey bees, too furry. Thanks for bumblebee website link benmorg, that led me on to searching google images to try to identify them. More interested than worried now, will watch and wait... Wasn't Flying Ant Day last week - I should know, I cycle to work, they were all over the place last Tuesday?
  12. We've noticed bees disappearing into a hummock of moss on the surface of a zinc bath planter in our back garden. They disappear into a hole in the moss, and we never see them come out (not that we hang around for hours waiting). The bees are brownish, round and furry, bit smaller than a bumble bee, with a white dot at the top of their hind legs. It's not what you'd call really busy, but while watering tonight there were frequent visitors. Are they making a nest? Unfortunately the planter is right by our back door and would be heavy to move. What to do, if anything? We like bees, but could this become a problem?
  13. So nothing 'computedshorty' says is to be taken seriously? In December he answered my question about the history of our house in Landcroft Road. I was really pleased, and have passed his stories on to several friends. If it was all made up, I fell for it hook line and sucker. Please tell, I won't be angry. Slightly impressed, actually... Gullible of Landcroft
  14. Agreed. Please keep on sharing your memories with us computedshorty. Annie
  15. Wow, what a brilliant memory. I have an 85 year old friend in Hindmans Road who tells me lots of interesting things about what Nunhead and Rye Lane used to be like, but she couldn't remember this area, so thank you computedshorty for filling in the gaps. So that's where we live. We work in the shop area now, nice to think of people popping in for a pound of sugar! You certainly knew a lot of people. We've been here about 5 years now and I find it still a really friendly community, and know many more neighbours than I did in 20 years of living near Loughborough Junction. I don't know any of the names you mention though. Will think of your post box story every time I use it...
  16. Hi computedshorty, that's all really interesing. Don't suppose you know what shops were on the next crossroads down, ie the Landcroft Road/Goodrich Road crossroads just before Goodrich hits Lordship Lane? I think the white corner house was a sweet shop, but I can't find out what my house (the other ex-corner shop, the bricky one) was - I know it was a grocers in late 1800s, and an office and pottery in the 1980's, but can't find anyone who remembers what it was in between times. Our builders think the shop door was originally on the corner, and there's signs of outbuildings in the back yard.
  17. Our neighbour's cat has gone missing while we were looking after it. Tinky is a dark tortoiseshell female cat, friendly but rather shy. She was last seen on Friday evening. We are on the Landcroft/Goodrich crossroads. Maybe she has got shut in someone's shed? We've looked after her many times before, so she hasn't run away. Update Monday evening - cat has turned up safe and sound, just in time for her owners' return - phew! Thanks to everyone who read the thread and particularly the member who sent a helpful pm.
  18. I take stuff to the Red Cross shop in Forest Hill where they are friendly and have never said 'no thanks' - parking's difficult there though. There's an Oxfam shop in Herne Hill in Half Moon Lane near the toy shop, I think you could park in a side road, but I don't drive so I'm not sure about parking restrictions around there.
  19. It was one of the smaller terrier types - Norwich maybe? Didn't see it myself. Anyway it's not with us now, having been taken to the police station, they probably have a database of lost dogs - hope the owner finds it though, apparently it was smiley and friendly.
  20. I've just got home and my partner tells me that he and a neighbour found a small dog around 4.30 this afternoon running around in the street(top end of Landcroft Road) apparently lost. Our neighbour has taken the dog to ED police station.
  21. No, that wasn't me, so I don't know how that story ended...
  22. A few weeks ago my bicycle was stolen from the shed in our back garden - chatting to a neighbour we found they had suffered an identical crime a couple of weeks earlier - we both live in corner houses, the side gates were locked so the thief had to climb over the (high) wall, and in both cases they only took one (the better, of course) bike, so maybe it's just one person. So watch out if you think your bike's safe - these thieves could be back. Landcroft/Goodrich Road area. Sorry the warning's a bit late, I'm new to the forum.
  23. Thanks for responding to my question, Bara. You're right about the sweet shop, our neighbours over the road know that that's what their house was - but our's is on the other corner (on the left if your back's towards LL and the church). Really interested to hear about all the other shops, though, and thanks for the tip about John Harvard Library too, we'll try it.
  24. Interesting hearing about all the small shops there used to be around East Dulwich. It's inspired me to register and ask if anyone knows what sort of shop our home was. We're on the crossroads of Landcroft Road and Goodrich Road. According to our neighbours, one of the houses on the crossroad was once (another!) sweet shop - but what was ours? We tried Southwark Archives but the trail went cold after finding out it was a grocers in Victorian times.
