Local school needs funding to continue with counselling service.
gerry replied to alice's topic in The Lounge
Yes the children are aware before they start Counselling that we may have to take things forward if they are at risk, I.e. things at home that put them at risk can be taken forward. The student is aware of the implications but sometimes they can no longer live with a difficult situation at home. We have made changes for some families which have benefited everyone without social services being involved. -
Local school needs funding to continue with counselling service.
gerry replied to alice's topic in The Lounge
I have been a school Counsellor for the past 10 years and would like to give my views based on what I have read here so far. School counsellors have a duty of care to safeguard their students. All Counselling is kept confidential between the Counsellor and student, unless something is raised which suggests the child is at risk. Then the case is discussed with the child and the child protection officer in the school-each school should have at least one or more. Then the case can be taken further. Up until that point the Counselling remains confidential and offers a safe place for the student to speak. The vast majority of students do not need child protection and just need a safe place to talk about their concerns such as self harming, depression, stress over exams, friendship issues, gender identity issues, racism, bullying, home life, drugs, alcohol. All of these are are kept confidential unless I feel a child is at risk. Many times the parents are not told because they are part of the problem. It?s better that the child gets the help they need. My Counselling if funded by the parents association as they feel it is a valuable service. Maybe the school parents can get together and discuss with the school governors. -

There are fake parcel deliveries in the news, phone contracts especially are the main target. Please do not accept a package and sign for it if you are not expecting anything. Phones are delivered, then picked up again, but by that time it?s too late because you have signed for the package. Read on BBC news.

Thanks. I am very interested. I see you are an ex-counsellor. May I ask which ward you acted for? Also what is the significance of council charges applied to this development? Thanks for getting in touch. -

Why bother to set policies and standards which everyone else has to abide by, but not the council? They can override whenever or wherever they like, without any consequences except to the local neighbours. There was never a need for consultations or objections. It seems we all wasted time and effort when the council had clearly decided on their own what they would do. -

Councillor McAsh, I am interested that you say that you have always been interested in taking account of the views of residents. You did not engage in any serious degree with the views of the Sage Mews residents. Nor were you or any of the other ward councillors at the planning committee meeting. Why does the Council set these standards and then drive a coach and horses through them? This development is between 50% and 100% over-sized as regards density. They could have had four 2-storey homes which would have met density standards and not overshadowed Sage Mews or three (instead of four) 3-storey homes which would also have met density standards. We all agree that more social housing is required. It should however be provided in a manner consistent with the Council?s published standards and without overwhelming other residents. -

Thank you James. Your honesty is appreciated. The density of the planned development is 510 habitable rooms per hectare, versus Southwark?s Residential Design Standards of 200-350. The gardens will also be less than half the size required. Too crowded for the people who have to live in them and too crowded for the neighbourhood. Why does Southwark produce these plans and standards and then completely ignore them. I hope the current councillors for this ward are honest enough now to admit that they and the council regard East Dulwich as an urban area and not the suburban one we all thought we were living in. We will remember the lack of engagement of our local counsellors at the next election. -

Density is 50% over the Council?s standard for East Dulwich but this was completely ignored by the committee. The architects designed for an urban setting when East Dulwich is designated suburban. Also completely ignored the impact on other residents. A shocking decision and an abdication of responsibility by our ward councillors, none of whom made any effort to understand concerns. -

The council reps decided it was acceptable to ignore their own planning guidelines regarding density and proximity to nearest houses. So it was most likely decided before the committee meeting. -

We will be there. It seems Southwark are ignoring right to light. Does anyone know if this is a requirement in planning applications? -

Thank you Cora. We have sent ours in so I hope others will do the same if they want to submit comments more than the allotted 2000 characters. Issues of density, amenity and possible noise and being overlooked are all suggested comments if anyone would like to object. -

Consultation now live online. -
I respect and appreciate all of your efforts to keep the forum safe and on message. However, please unlock the Bassano Street thread as it is NOT a duplicate. This is an ongoing consultation with the council, which started back in October 2018 and we are still informing the local community of the latest updates. I hope you will unlock this so I can continue to update local residents about the dates for online comments. In July we should have an online consultation available for everyone to see the latest building plans and make comments.
-
We will have only 21 days to comment once the consultation process is online.
-
The council has submitted its planning application and we will be notified when it will be visible online for comment. Sadly this seems to coincide once again with school holidays when very few will be able to participate in the consultation process. I will post any further information as I receive it. Likewise if anyone receives a letter from the council concerning the development please summarise it here in this thread. Many thanks.
