  4. I'm surprised given the nature of this thread that no one has mentioned (for the sake of comparitive background) the "thieving gyspy bastards" thing that used to be in Viz...(where's whatshername when you need her - the one with the top tips...)

  9. No not selling - but if i didnt already have a surfeit of bikes and associated paraphenalia I would be sorely tempted to put in an offer. In the old days we always used to build up our own bikes - the choice of off the peggers wasnt so big then as it is now. Its not difficult if you have all the right tools (head set spanners, bottom bracket spanners, chain splitter, cable cutters etc etc) if you dont have the right tools then it would obviously be very awkward...
  10. Forget the independent fabrication - if you are say 5'10" - 6'0" ish you want this then build up from there - shd be able to do the whole job for undr GBP 750

  13. Soemeone once told me the late Dowager Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother used to visit Dulwich Park each year to view the rhododendrons?? Does anyone know about this or is it simply a (sub)urban myth??
  14. You need at least three levels of security - firstly there must be a decent lock on the shed door (but be aware that if the hinges are held on with accessible screws they will simply un-screw them and go in that way instead - use butt hinges instead of gate hinges), then the bikes inside the shed should be locked to something heavy (or each other) using a HEAVY DUTY padlock and chain - i.e. something with the gold security level specifically for motorbikes or bikes - these cost anything up to GBP 100 - then also fit your shed with an alarm if at all possible. We had a battery operated one which works fine but you need to keep re-charging the batteries every two weeks or so which is a pain. I eventually laid a cable (armoured of course) to the shed and now have an alrm on mains power. If you do the above you will dter all but the most determined of thieves who will in all likelihood find an easier target. The outlay seems a lot but if you have expensive bikes then I would say it is definitely worth it. Oh and the other thing is thieves HATE metal sheds since they are much more difficult and really noisy to break into!!
  15. I'm no expert but I believe the term gypsy refers to a distinct racial group found throughout Europe who have their roots in India but travelled to Europe many centuries ago. Traveller refers to any group of any racial origin with no fixed abode who travel around the country - e.g. scots and irish tinkers and laterly the so called "new age travellers" (where have they gone??)

  24. I was out riding my bike last summer when for no apparent reason I went flying over the handlebars as if I had hit a pothole or suchlike. On examing the spot where it had happened there was no sign of anything - the road was perfectly flat. I just put it down to some sort of bad luck. Anyway a few weeks later I was at work and just happened to look out the window from the eighth floor of my building, there was a lone cyclist riding along the road. For some reason this caught my interest - the next thing I knew the poor guy went flying over the handlerbars of his bike just as I had done!! I went down to look at the road a bit later and once again there was nothing untoward - perfectly flat and no potholes or anything. Explain that!!
  25. I am also quite thick as regards this subject - am I right in saying that you can only have a problem if you don't get your card back from the machine and the villains come along later and retrieve it and use it???
