  1. I notice Mr. Barber has won the Online Councillor of the Year award. Many congratulations James - richly deserved! His online presence has made me feel a lot more in touch with local government. In previous areas I've lived I can honestly say I rarely knew who my councillor was - they were pretty invisible. Having James' presence on here makes the whole process so much more accessible - it's very refreshing!
  2. Seems the new Waitrose on Old Brompton Road is going to be the first smaller format store to trial the name 'Little Waitrose'. A new sub-brand.
  3. Prince Philip is a legend. My favourite of his gaffes is when he asked a Scottish driving instructor how he kept the natives off the booze long enough to get a licence.

It's pretty much exactly one mile, and East Dulwich station isn't even in the East Dulwich ward - it's South Camberwell, but anyway I'm nitpicking :)

It's just that saying this is a skanky part of SE London sounded troll-like to me - but then you're entitled to your view and I'm entitled to think it's slightly detached from reality.

Please do not feed the troll :)

I'd have to strongly disagree with that statement. There are plenty of no's, some more vocal than others and also a fair amount of yes's and maybe's. I don't think it's clear cut at all, and as someone else stated I'm sure there are plenty of forum lurkers who have not made their opinion known as well as the ED residents who don't visit the forum.
  8. My vote would be a yes, ideally for a Waitrose but it would depend on the specifics, i.e. where it would be located. In an ideal world, it would replace the Co-op which never seems that well stocked when I go in. For me personally it wouldn't effect my spending on LL as I tend to go to Sainsbury's or the Waitrose in Beckenham for my main food shop anyway. I'd still use LL for what it's good for - speciality shops and nice cafes/restaurants.
  9. That's excellent news! Thanks so much for letting us know Tessa.

  11. Give this a try: To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), do this: Be sure the computer is shut down. Press the power button. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear). During startup in Mac OS X v10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

    a joke

I ordered dessert at the Pizza Hut and they gave me tiramisu and a blindfolded horse. I said, 'No ? mascarpone'.

Maybe Pearson could > front up the right... This is indeed turning into a classic thread. I'd love a Waitrose in ED but then I do have a vested interest as I work for them (well John Lewis Partnership, but same thing)....so ignore me! I just want somewhere close by to use my discount card. :)
  15. One of my butlers usually fetches it for me.
  16. Move to Croydon? Come on now, that's a bit harsh! :))
  17. I quite agree re: supply and demand. If it's there, it's there because people are shopping there. I was just surprised how people get very defensive when people say they don't like it. So, another vote for a Waitrose from me then. :)-D ...although, the building would still be fugly though!

So what if it's been there 20+ years. Things change.
  19. concita - how did the burglar evade the movement detectors in your alarm system? That's the bit I don't get in these burglaries, but there is obviously a way of doing it!

Anything that does, I would expect to see on the Met website and although there is definite work that needs doing it does not seem to point to a crime wave.
  21. Really sorry to what happened to you concita. It must have been terrible. Would people say that the stats found on the Met site, e.g. http://maps.met.police.uk/access.php?area=00BEGH&sort=rate&order=a&ct=3&crimetype-button= are accurate for residential burglaries? I know even one burglary is one too many, but the stats on there favour comparably to other areas of London I have lived in - areas I would rate as safe. Burglaries also seem to have been coming down steadily from 104 in 2007/08 to 82 last year. This is however presuming those stats are an accurate reflection of what actually goes on! I definitely feel a lot more aware of burglaries in ED, but more from the fact I read about them on here.
  22. Thanks for the crime stats James. Makes for very interesting reading. I'm going to be moving to ED from Queens Park, NW London in a few weeks. I've never once felt un-safe in Queens Park after living there for over 5 years, including walking back home late at night etc.. It's quite an affluent area with lots of families, so it always felt very safe. Looking at the stats, reported crime incidents are about double in QP vs ED, including nearly double the instances of violence against the person! I would have thought the population of the ED ward would be more than QP, so the per capita stats would probably show a wider difference. Puts it all into perspective really! People are probably more aware of crime on this forum, because people post about it here. There is no such forum in QP that I'm aware of, so I never had any visibility of incidents. My conculsion is therefore, eater81 = troll
