  1. My husband and I were walking to Dulwich Park Sunday morning (about 8.30am) and we crossed over from Goose Green so we could continue up Lordship Lane There was a young black guy standing near the bus stop (opposite Goose Green) standing next to his bicycle. When you got close to him you could see that he had a triangular piece of material positioned across his face so you could only see his eyes. I passed him first but as my husband did, he went right up to my husband's face in a threatening "stand off" manner My husband just got out of his way and when we both looked around he got on this bike and began to follow us. We did not want to encourage him by looking around and eventually he cycled off. I know nothing happened to us but it was quite upsetting. I just thought I would mention it because had I been on my own, I would have felt quite scared.
  2. I was just approaching my car (parked at the side of HSBC) at about 5.20 pm this evening, when a white guy in his late 20's/early 30's went running past me carrying a shopping basket from the Co-Op - the one you fill with your shopping as you walk around the shop. He ran speeding up the road and kept looking back to see if he was being pursued. A woman approached me and said she saw him with food in the basket in the shop and then all of a sudden he just ran out of the shop with the food and basket. Just thought I would mention it.
  3. If you are looking for someone to fit a London or Manchester bar, I have the name of someone who did some work for me. He also fitted window locks and for the moment at least, I feel a lot safer. He was reasonably priced and very reliable - tidy worker who turned up on time. Enough said!
  4. There is someone on here called thedulichbeekeeper - find him under items for sale. He is selling all his equipment for ?600 but he may be able to give you a few pointers. He is selling for family reasons, not honey problems!!! Hope this helps
  5. Never heard of this. Must say it is extremely worrying, especially from a safety point of view and bearing in mind how man people have external gas meters, they can have their pick! Whatever next!
  6. We get lots of shop owners who park their large vans in our street to avoid parking charges - we have free parking. They take up so much space and are quite happy to bash your car about whilst trying to park their van in a very tight space. They tend to be old rust buckets covered in graffiti and should you be lucky enough to have one park outside your house, goodbye to daylight in the living room.
  7. Grab yourself a clipboard or file put in your Southwark Council Tax bill or any other correspondence with Southwark Logo sticking out the top and walk around there - assuming they don't know you of course. Pretend to be from the noise control team. Be nice and say you have no option but to call on them because there have been complaints. Done it twice myself and it worked a treat. 100% more effective than ringing Southwark, waiting an hour for a call back and a further hour for them to come around and trample through your house to see if they can hear the noise and do nothing in the end.... I have tried it the proper way to no avail and I do not own a handgun - unusual for Peckham I grant you so my clipboard is my new weapon. Can be borrowed at a fee !!!!
  8. Why don't you look for love on line. I know people assume all those who meet on line are odd but that is not always the case. Some people are in professions that make it difficult to meet members of the opposite sex. I know lots of really nice, decent people who have met that way. The stigma that used to be attached to meeting on line is long gone. Bon chance mon brave
  9. Thanks for taking the time to share. It was interesting to see what others said. Another two that I forgot to mention were the endings of the films "Leon" and "The Usual Suspects" - both endings came as a surprise to me.
  10. I was chatting to some friends and we ended up discussing surprise moments in flims/dramas, so I just wondered if anyone else wanted to share any. The following were surprise moments for me The Killing Series 1 (Danish one) - when Lund turns around and see "Sara 84" on Vaugen's sweatshirt Sixth Sense - when you realise the character of Bruce Willis was dead all long Manor des Source - when Cesar realises he caused the death of the son he did not know he had Au wiedersehen Pet - when Oz gets up on stage and starts singing really well to the surprise of his friends (and me!) Care to share?
  11. I completely understand how you feel - I would be the same. I keep my bike inside and it is a real nuisance and eyesore but I know if I leave it outside it would get pinched. It is ridiculous but I have no choice. These buggers have no issue stealing bikes in broad daylight with people passing so what chance do we stand.
  12. I will not have time to read either The Other Side of the Bridge and/or God Bless You Mr Rosewater between now and your meeting next week. If I found out what book you were reading next, would it be possible for me to attend the February meeting? I can gather the information of the book/meeting date from this thread but I just wanted to check that you were not a "closed book" club as it were !!! thanks Janet
  13. I had this done to be about 20 years ago in Henry's Piccadilly. It was so awful that I can recall it to this day. In fact three ladies (all sitting at separate tables had their bags stolen that night). I had to pay a guy to come out and cut a car key for me on Piccadilly where I had parked, having borrowed a stranger's phone to call someone out. Got a taxi home knowing I had no cash on me (I had some at home to pay but still a horrible feeling). My fileofax (it was 20 years ago!), house keys, make up, mobile etc. all gone not to mention a lovely bag. So sorry for your friend - reading your post brought it all back to me. I often wonder what I would have done if I had caught the person leaving the bar with my bag!! (I am a tall strong lady!).
  14. Hi there. I have just started a beauty blog for women 40 plus. The reason is that I could not find many beauty blogs for women my age. I searched on youtube and found a few but they were mostly in the US. Whilst I enjoyed watching them, quite a lot of the products recommended were not available in the UK. I am just trying this blog business out - my first time. It would be great to get some local support, so if you are interested please take a look. I am with blogger.com and my blogging name is mrsdarcylovesmakeup I intend talking about not only beauty products but health, diet, treatments and general stuff. If you have time take a look and if you are interested join in. Thanks PS You don't have to be 40 plus to join.
  15. Yes, actually that is a good point and one I had not thought of. Seeing how well they had done would definitely inspire me. Thanks for that suggestion. I have heard back from four people so it looks rather positive.
  16. Sorry for the misunderstanding - the post was really for women who I supposed would be more interested in this type of thing. I am female. Sorry it that did not come across.
  17. I need to lose some weight (about 3 stone) so I am looking for someone who has a similar amount of weight to lose (okay so I know most of East Dulwich ladies are slim but hopefully there will be some larger ladies out there hiding!!) The idea would be that we could motivate each other, perhaps meet up to go for a brisk walk (eventually a light jog!)or cycle ride, even a swim. If we start now we could certainly be in better shape in a few months time. The autumn can be a lovely time to spend walking or running in the park and I know Dulwich Park has some exercise machines - yippee. I am going to start the regime regardless. I owe it to myself and my partner, but I just thought it might be nice to have another person/or people to share the journey with. I live locally and turned 49 at the beginning of this month - I don't want to be fat and 50! plus I would love to feel fitter. So if this interests you or your have a suggestion (nice ones only) get in touch. Thank you. PS If you are currently attending WW and just want someone to exercise with occasionally that would be fine too - now I am sounding desperate!
  18. Thanks for all the comments left. Sorry it has taken me a few days to thank you but I have been away. Thanks again.
  19. Well said Jenny. You often find that these people who "have a life" partying all hours are not getting up for work the next day but we are keeping them!!! Paying their rent, council tax etc. What makes me really angry is that as the innocent party, you have to ring Southwark Noise Team and then wait up to an hour for them to call you back and ask the question "is there still noise" and finally they will deem to turn up. They then confront the residents causing the disturbance who turn the music down for a brief time before turning it back up with a vengence by which time you have lost about three hours of sleep and cannot get back to sleep at all. It is nothing to do with getting a life. We have to sleep with our windows closed in the height of summer (yes I know this year's weather is an exception) because cars fitted with speaker systems that fill their boot play loud music in the early hours of the morning and drive slowly around the streets waking everyone up. Nothing is done about it. Not only does it disturb residents but it is unsafe to drive around with such loud music because as a driver you cannot hear anything outside the vehicle and what about those mini motor cycles that make that horrendous noise and wake you up in the middle of the night. I could just go on and on. The reality is that these people creating this noise and disturbance are, in the majority of cases, unemployed and do not have to get up for work like the rest of us. I am sick of it.
  20. I registered for tickets, as did my partner, when they were first advertised on the proper Olympic website. We only managed to get Hockey (I bought those on my account) and Paralympics (he bought those on his account he set up). You have to set up an account on the site to be able to purchase tickets. In the last few days there has been all this news about extra seats so last night we both logged on separately on two different laptops and with two different password/accounts to see if we could get any tickets. No luck at all and so we logged off. This morning he receives a call from his bank (Santander) about some strange transactions that happened around midnight last night - two for 50p and then one for ?107 for clothes - all purchased on line. Anyhow he confirmed that were not his purchases and his card was stopped. Within half an hour of his call, I receive a phone call from Barclaycard asking about four transactions again made around midnight last night. The first 3 for ?10 were put through but the bigger one for almost ?1000 was thankfully declined. They haven now stopped the card. This is so odd because we have no joint accounts whatsoever so apart from this website there is nothing to connect us. I hardly ever use my BC and this year have only used it for the olympic tickets and Amazon. My partner does not use his card much either. What I cannot understand is how did they not only have our complete card number, but the expiration dates and the security number on the back. All the transactions were done over the internet. I have searched today to see if this has happened to anyone else but cannot find anything. It does seem odd that the only site we were on last night was the official 2012 olympic site and now this has happened. Incidentally the transactions were done from the UK. Anyone got any thoughts on how this could have happened. We have checked our PC's for virus but none are showing and we have firewalls etc. Thanks
  21. Thank you all so much for that helpful advice. It is so useful - fingers crossed now for some decent weather. Really handy to know about the ID, cushions and my favourite, a good picnic. Thanks again
  22. I have managed to scoop two men's quarter final tickets from the ballot. I have not been before although have watched it every year on TV. We will be in Court 1 and I just wondered whether anyone knew whether you actually get given a ticket with a seat number beforehand/upon arrival or whether you are allocated a seat upon arrival and get to choose where you sit. Does anyone who has been before have any tips for getting a good seat, i.e. arriving early or some other little trick. Any other advice would be appreciated. Thanks
  23. I fell over the flex to my laptop and it came crashing down to the ground. The hardrive has consequently broken. I have replaced this and the laptop is working (albeit with nothing on it). I just wondered if anyone local is able to transfer my pics from the broken hardrive. Thank you
