  1. Well done Kate. What a fantastic idea for a fantastic cause. It must be remembered that this facility is not only used by us reasonably well off parents (excuse my generalisation here), they provide a hell of a lot of support to kids whose parents are finding things a bit harder to deal with. Well worth giving up a coffee for IMO!
  2. English muffins (not the sugar packed American ones), crumpets, toasted bagels, baked beans or spaghetti hoops (we go for the low sugar/low salt variety). Our kids also reject sugary cereals (for treats), even though they like the look of them if they see an ad. Funnily enough I have one that will only eat rice crispies for breakfast even though he is offered a choice.

Doesn't James say that if the person does not cut their hedge then the council will charge them ?200-300. In what way are Southwark giving a 'jolly freebie'?
  4. Cupatea, we have the same tastes! Swedish Archipelago (no more than 40 mins to an hour out of Stockholm)is probably one of the most truly beautiful and peaceful places I have been to. Make sure you get a speed boat in the holiday cottage deal and you are totally sorted. We even swam in the Baltic Sea (not for the faint hearted even in summer).

Well, lets hope you are not trying to push a buggy, walk with the aid of a walking stick/frame or are visually impaired trying to make it down some of our smaller streets!
  6. I think proper gymnastics is perhaps a little too structured at this age. Both mine went to Tumble Tots and one now still does gymnastics but did not start until 4yrs (3-4 is about usual start). 'Proper' gymnastics involves a fair amount of waiting around and paying attention - not always the forte of a 2 1/2 yr old.
  7. Montenegro? Haven't been there myself but read an article last year which said it is still a very new destination to tourists but breathtakingly beautiful with great beaches. The only downside I found was the price of flights. The best thing would be to fly to Croatia and drive down. Some of the holiday apartment websites (Holiday Lettings etc.) have apartments advertised.
  8. I was truly horrified by this decision but perhaps my views are more for the lounge!
  9. Was this research funded by anyone? Wary researchers mind!
  10. Agree with others. Even at 40+1 they didn't think my second was going to end up 10lb 4oz (even though I warned them about big babies in the family and that my first was 9lb 4oz)! I wouldn't worry anyway. My lovely 10 pounder is now a very normal sized 5 year old.
  11. Far be it for me to question your motives mrchas but as Dorothy says, can you let us know the source of the second post as you have done with the first. At least an author would be useful, then we can make up our own mind!
  12. Ah, what a way with words Mr Delingpole has. First climate scepticism now free schools. Love the bit about Birbalsingh being "ethnic".
  13. I would advise you check with the school first. Some schools, Heber for instance, has a policy on class birthday treats because of allergies.
  14. It is only a guess but I think it is a football game :)-D Kidding aside, saw some girls who had come from the game in Sainsburys. They had two blue stripes on each cheek. Is that the colour of DHFC?
  15. Brilliant! Thanks everyone.
  16. Does anyone know if Shot by the Sheriff still does passport photos and if so, how much they are. Just got some done at the chemist near Goose Green and although the quality is good, the kids look like criminals! Need to get them re-done ASAP.
  17. Thanks for putting me straight on the name Hero, Saffron. I had always made the assumption that it was a male name because I know someone in the 20s with that name. Still a lovely name, whichever way :)
  18. Hero is traditionally a boys name, as is Paris. Never heard Hero used for a girl before. Not sure I agree with the appropriation to girls but then again, I like the name Sydney for a girl and that is also traditionally a boys name.
  19. How terribly sad. My thoughts go out to the family. We live very, very close by and saw and heard nothing. What a tribute to the family that mourners were well behaved and respectful!
  20. Would definitely agree with getting a short list of 2 or 3 and trying them out when baby is born. DS1 had one name for a week, another for two weeks, tried the first one again then decided on the second. It absolutely works for him much more than our other name. DS2 went without a name for about a month whilst my husband and I 'argued' over our favourite names. Again, the name that suits him best won. Don't feel pressured to decide before bub is born.
  21. Worry away, Zeban. As well as Irish names, I also like the name Sydney and Adelaide for a girl but as I am Australian and children are dual citizens, family would find them difficult and they would not sound quite right if they ever decide to live in Australia. My two boys have Old Testament names and we are often asked if we are religious or Jewish (no to both). I always find that funny.
  22. I have a list of beautiful Irish girls names I never got to use.
  23. Expect some sort of staggered start if your child did not attend the nursery of the school they are to attend. There are very likely to be differences at all schools. I was in your position trying to predict the length of leave I would need to take when DS2 was starting school (was on mat leave when DS1 started) but school wasn't able to tell me until very close to start date. Saying that, probably no harm to ring the school to see they have an idea on timescales.
  24. Like others say, relax. It is incredibly common. DS1 wouldn't poo in the toilet until about 3 1/2 - had been dry at night from 2 yrs! We just allowed him to put on a nappy when he wanted to poo so he didn't hold it in and feel uncomfortable and stressed. We eventually broke through by developing a poo time song borrowed from a friend about sending his poo off to the 'poo party'. Made him giggle and relaxed him completely.
  25. Thanks Amberwood - I will have a look. LSB, did you find the Atlantic coast a little breezy and the water cold?
