Lovely people at Neighbourhood Vet kindly took him in and then phoned me later to say he was not micro-chipped so possibly a cat that had been living as a stray for some time. He was about 5 years old and may have just dropped dead from heart attack type thing. We had seen this cat crossing our garden and investigating the compost bin, sometimes snoozing on the shed for several months. Normally very timid, for the last ten days he'd suddenly become quite friendly, accepting pats and bits of cat food or chicken. He'd appear at the window every morning and evening. The day before he died he was really quite clingy, nosing the water can so we gave him water, trying to get in to the house and flopping down to sleep on our back step etc - leading some members of the family to believe that maybe he felt unwell or knew that his end was nigh. Poor fellow!
