What did you do this summer?!?
Curmudgeon replied to snowboarder's topic in The Family Room Discussion
When my children were around that age we went to Turkey ..to a place called Calis Beach ...villas with pools are cheap and you can fly Easyjet to Dalaman. We booked a villa through Holidaylettings.com. The beach wasn't golden sand but there were loads of decent restaurants and beach sports we hung out in the pool...boat taxi to Fetiyhe was half hour. Turkey is like Greece used to be and much much cheaper There are also hotels with kids clubs but that's never been my thing tbh -
All students finishing year 11 should be encouraged to look around to see what other options they have, that's the nature of modern education and unlike when I was at school and the expectation was to stay put There should be careers counselling on hand to help them investigate and they should look by course offering I'm sure there are a lot of helpful sites ..this came up on a quick google http://www.gettherightschool.co.uk/sixth-form-applications.html

And let's not argue against the status quo eh? My opinion matters to me :D

I agree and remember all too well how unavailable Alleyn's facilities were to local schools over the last 10 years or so A field one day a year for a couple of years when the school is closed does not fulfil charitable status requirements in my opinion

It actually has a lot of benefits based on the different development paths of small children, perhaps you should learn something about early years education before commenting negatively on a school. Leaving your wife to look around schools rather than taking an active interest doesn't really make you any kind of expert now does it? And I have no links with the school at all

Dog Friendly East Dulwich - what is/isn't
Curmudgeon replied to mannymanuel's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If they don't display a sign take the dog in Most shops allow, even welcome, well-behaved dogs, apart from supermarkets, as do most pubs -
I am extremely happy with the State secondary offer with one highly academic child at Kingsdale and benefitting from amazing opportunities and another child I am hopeful will go to Sydenham Girls although I would be equally happy with other options I also don't mind how people choose to spend their salary and if they believe private education is right for their child then great...we chose not to and to have a much higher standard of living and opportunity than we would have paying 2 sets of school fees, with or without a nominal bursary. I appreciate we are fortunate to have that choice to make. I do feel those who scrimp and save to send their kids to private might be missing out on something, but still that's their decision I do object to the lack of community support and charitable actions by our local private schools ...and the appalling road and environmental hazards caused by the numerous coaches parking outside the park zones and continuously running their engines..yes Alleyns I'm looking specifically at you and Townley Road which I have the misfortune to have to drive down on my return from work to be home in time for my children

Feedback wanted from Heber parents .
Curmudgeon replied to EastDulwichSE22's topic in The Family Room Discussion
God, I wish they'd stop communicating tbh ;)...seems like every other day there's more emails and news And if you are a new reception parent I'd take your time and get used to the ebb and flow of school life, just as your child will. Try to enjoy it Primary school, and particularly the early years, are about learning to love school and learning to learn -
You think a decent carpet and underlay would be ?2500 - I suggest you try warehouse carpets in Brockley and do not go for all wool because it will not withstand your needs and is not easily cleaned Click and lock is a decent enough option as an option but isn't easy to take up again

Help... secondary school dilemmas - again!
Curmudgeon replied to HannahSE23's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I have to say the concept of choice is really a misnomer, that said I don't envy you the angst of selection for that silly form I have a shy boy at Kingsdale and have been delighted with the school, its pastoral care as well as academic opportunities. He's still shy but has a good group of friends and lots of extra curricular opportunities. Yes the lottery admission is not great. We will be choosing for my daughter next year, and I think Sydenham will be a good fit for her but am happy to have Kingsdale as a fallback position -

The Demolition of 34 East Dulwich Grove

I think its disgusting that such a lovely building should have been purposefully left to rot and be redeveloped by an investor despite planning permission being denied on a number of occasions I've heard some horrible rumours concerning its initial acquisition too -

Eurghhh lucky nub LOL I would prefer somewhere that can zap em to be honest, if anyone knows of somewhere close by I'd be grateful -
Small children are natural believers and will come home talking about God, I've always just responded with a "well some people believe that" and just answer any questions that come up. We are atheists but believe our children should make up their own minds, after all how can they reject a belief system they know nothing about, hence they have always taken part in nativities which is the most religious aspect of their Community school. I am a strong supporter of compulsory RE in schools, it is about understanding the major religions of the world and our history, art and world politics etc Also if you don't teach them about organised religion how can they choose to reject it?

The more I hear of The Patch, the less interested I am in going. It seems to have taken the less appealing, up-its-own-bum with pretention aspects of ED and gone a step further. Which seems sad for a new place. Hope I'm wrong - but the prices, the menu, the abysmal student style graffiti-art

I love Halloween in ED - and the lit pumpkin rule which all follow Every year it gets better
