LOL carbs do not lead to type 2 diabetes. Blood sugar and insulin spikes DO NOT cause diabetes. They are the main SYMPTOMs of diabetes. Diabetes is caused when the body cannot regulate the amount of sugar in the bloodstream. There are several reasons for this (and can vary depending on if you are talking about T1Dm or T2Dm) but the actual cause is unknown. Scientists do not know what actually triggers it in people, but the known risk factors are: Genetics Obesity Age Long term use of certain medications (especially antidepressants and statins) Possible environmental factors like arsenic and other pesticides and herbicides. There seems to be a correlation but there is NOT a proven causation to these Not carbs Diabetics

So I'm confused now Say 10 people put a school first choice and they all qualify for a place at the school and take the last 10 places then surely there are no places left for people who put it 3rd or 4th on their list even if those people live a similar distance away. I understood that it is not the school who manages the preferences but the pan london application process ...there must be a reason for preferences in terms of initial offer for students meeting the same Criteria otherwise what's the point of it?

Dulwich Park - What are the dos and donts..
Curmudgeon replied to OD's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Gosh when did everyone get so po-faced? Edmummy has a great SOH -
It also matters which position you put the schools on your list Similar issues at Sydenham Girls ...I think those who expected it to be a fallback school when they didn't put it first were mightily surprised to realise that others did it put it first and so got in whereas thy were wait-listed At least that's what I assume happened

Catchments don't work like that You should visit all the schools and make your own mind up How do you know you won't be in the initial intake for charter 2? I do appreciate how nerve wracking the whole secondary transfer can be but try not to get caught up in the panic and angst, do your research, make sensible and qualified choices and get your application in on time

Oh streuth And what otta said If you are the type of parent who does their utmost to ensure their children understand how to behave in all environments and does not expect for example pedestrians to make way for speeding scooters, a tantrumming child to remain in situ in a restaurant or pub rather than being removed until they calm down etc then you will have no issues at all.

Only children with statements could do so which has now been replaced by EHC so no difference there then -

It's not the children, it's ineffectual parenting Teach appropriate modes of behaviour for different environments and no problem Yes I'm a parent, my children have "restaurant voices".

House prices (in East Dulwich)
Curmudgeon replied to Earl Aelfheah's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Good I'm glad prices are dropping I'd like to see then drop even further tbh And I don't want to move either, they are just ridiculous for Victorian terraces and semis -

And not all the staff leaving are teachers Sometimes I think all this publishing of data involves parents far too much in the workings of a school and makes the schools job much harder, particularly when everything is analysed and discussed places like this

There were 153 staff members in November 2013 according to workforce census ...10 staff members moving on is not a lot in zone 2

Seems normal

I thought it served quite tasteless food when it was in ED tbh...I was disappointed and much preferred Hizar midweek We made the mistake of trying out the restaurant that replaced it though ...really poor quality Italian food from the pizza to the pasta via the salads ...and really, really expensive for what it was. The 89p take out pizzas in Iceland are superior to the ?11+ pizzas at Olivetti in our opinion.

I like children in pubs when their parents appreciate that it is their role to ensure their children know how to behave which does not involve running around, being loud or in any way impacting on other people's rights to enjoy themselves, hold a conversation etc ...I like children in pubs if their parents don't do that overly loud "look at me parenting" thing and take them outside to calm down if they are crying, tantrumming, being boisterous or generally acting like it's a park or playzone or their own home And now you can take that entire sentence and replace the word "parents" with "friends" and "children" with "other adults"

Moving out of London for secondary school?
Curmudgeon replied to HannahSE23's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I wouldn't for a moment contemplate moving out of London for the school situation, we have excellent schools If you're going to move you do because that's where you wish to live or for work reasons...but for schools I think that's a knee-jerk reaction to playground gossip I have a 14 year old at Kingsdale And an 11 year old heading to Sydenham Girls in September I am delighted with their education, opportunities and social lives -
I have never understood why that place is so big...banks of computers and about 5 staff members and very rare to see a client

The 124 Lordship Lane eyesore
Curmudgeon replied to Ms Blueberry's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I've always liked that shop front tbh ..it's full of character and you can tell small children completely macabre stories about it -
Sheesh 10 to 15 years ago we had proper power cuts in ED, and the water went off for days, Ooo and there was that flood when the drains couldn't cope and a number of basements were wrecked I remember when it was all green fields round here and you could g.....*trails off*
