That's > one area I'd really like to see more research in. It seems to me that the categorisation of 'low risk' mothers is much narrower once you get to second & third time mums. There are many potential things that can go wrong once you get to the childbirth that can't be predicted from an otherwise normal, healthy pregnancy - but once these things have happened with the first child, it may then indicate it's inappropriate for you to have a home birth the second time around. The second thing of course, is that labour is quicker and more straightforward with subsequent children anyway. For me, one of the most striking things from the report was the stat that as many as 1 in 200 births to LOW RISK first time mothers have a poor outcome, even in a hospital environment. In what other context would the probability of these sorts of outcomes ever be considered a low risk??
  2. Just thought I should say - we ended up having the baby shower at Le Chandelier yesterday in their Moroccan Room and it was superb. The staff were fantastic even though we're certainly not the easiest bunch. They were really helpful, allowed us to pre-order a wide variety of food (we had afternoon teas, canapes and a la carte as well) and everything we had was delicious. Everyone left happy and very very full. :) Thanks Pickle for the recommendation!
  3. On way home now so should be there shortly after 7 x
  4. Yes - on the list: - bellenden belle & david - susanjvr & hubby - me & or hubby (undecided!) - littlemoo as its a 3 hr course I think we probably want to start at 630? Caroline - are you happy to do it at your house? Think that would probably make most sense. See you later! It's December!! Xx
  5. We're now 6-7 people for the resus course on the 12th. Are there any more takers? x
  6. hello, First Aid peeps have gotten back to me. W/b 12th December they have a trainer available for any weekday evening. Let me know what works for you and I'll keep a tally. My personal preference is for Mon 12th but I will be free any of those days (if I'm not a mother yet!). xx
  7. I've read the study. You can find it here: http://www.bmj.com/content/343/bmj.d7400 They did the comparison against low risk mums in obstetric units - they also did an even more stringent test comparing low risk mums without any complicating conditions at onset of labour, but the rarity of poor outcomes meant they couldn't draw statistically significant conclusions...
  8. I've asked for some alternative dates as well, so we'll see what they say. I'd prob rather do it sooner rather than later though, for obvious reasons... ;) Failing that, I guess I'll have to send hubby along instead!
  9. same! I would be interested to know too.. why not reply in public??
  10. Hello, I've contacted Emma at First Aid for Life - she's had a cancellation for this Saturday morning so could do a course for up to 8 people. It would be ?45 each for 3 hours - but given the short notice, I will ask her if she's willing to do it for her normal weekday rate of ?35 each. It sounds like a pretty comprehensive course and good value compared to other ones I've seen. They have plenty of manikins and you get a comprehensive paediatric first aid manual to take away (and certificate too if you want it...) Drop me a PM if you're interested - and also if you're able to offer up your home as a venue(!!). I'll try calling around a few places in the meanwhile, but I guess they might charge us. I've attached the Course Outline she sent me - but they can also tailor it according to which areas we're most interested in covering. Sara ==== EDIT: Just to say - now looking at evenings for w/b 12th December...!
  11. Someone posted this in the Winter Babies Club:- http://hackneydoula.co.uk/?p=492 I thought it was a much more informative view of what's actually in the study - and the links to the actual study itself are there for you to read for yourself. I'm planning for a homebirth, but am under no delusion that I may well need to transfer to the hospital - midwives have been very open about it and gave lots of factual information at their monthly homebirth talk. The fact that the hospital is mere minutes away was probably the single biggest factor in deciding to at least try for it!
  12. Does anyone know what the catchment is for Goose Green??
  13. hi Hannah, I went to the homebirth talk on a Saturday and thought it was excellent. A couple who'd had a homebirth were there to tell us their story & answer questions (hers was a 30+ hr labour) as well as lots of printed info to take away. It was extremely popular the day we went though - room was a bit small! The only slightly annoying thing was that people still early on in pregnancy asked lots of irrelevant questions that you'd cover in antenatal classes, so session was a fair bit longer than if they'd just focused on Homebirth questions. If peeps are up for a night in on 15th, I'd be happy to join - I'll be 39 weeks by then... maternity leave starting next week. :) Pickle - I hope you're alright. Ditto what Hannah said. xx
  14. Hello, No luck yet with resus course. I'll try calling the chap again tomorrow. Re: Wednesday - breastfeeding workshop is just the NHS one which I signed up for from the forms when I had my booking with Kings. It's a LONG session though so won't be around until 2pm-ish, so I'm guessing I may miss you at the Gardens cafe. I should be able to come along on Thurs night - decided I am probably a bit too pregnant now, so haven't taken up tickets to see Jessie J & Kelly Rowland that night! :(
  15. hey ladies, i'm giving the breastfeeding workshop a go next Weds morning. Technically still not on maternity yet, but could nip out in the afternoon if you're doing coffee at the Gardens cafe! saw this thread on infant resuscitation and am trying to see if good ol' Norman will do a course for us Winter baby parents - though judging from the posts there have been lots of enquiries and not that much organised: http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?29,679894,page=1 aiming for a date before baby arrives so if I get some possible dates I'll let you know and we'll see who can make it! x
  16. hello - I've been a bit awol. Couldn't make it last Thurs unfortunately as had last hypnobirthing class. Due date is starting to feel a bit imminent now! I've been told about sea salt caramel crepes at this place and am keen to try: http://www.rabotestate.com/boroughmarket_cafe.html Not sure if anyone might fancy / be able to go along one weekday from 5th Dec onwards? Figure I should still be okay to venture as far as London Bridge that week...
  17. is it very hot in Rome? I had swollen feet and hands when I was in Italy at 25 weeks - but it was definitely due to the temperature!
  18. yes - fortunately I left the house late today so was able to remove the bin from it's haphazard location which was in direct obstruction of my front door!! But some days we can be out for a long time so it could have stayed like this until god knows what time tonight. sandyman Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I was going to put this on the burglaries thread > yesterday but it may be more appropriate here as > this has been brought up. 19. hello - I don't think any of us minded which venue we go to, so perhaps chief organiser Caroline can make the call? I've no idea what Gowlett is like with Lucky 7's on! x
  20. aww.. that's good news Nicky. was she planning a home birth or it just turned out that way?!
  21. yep - flu jab was v quick as arrived a few mins early, but of course I forgot about the whole aqua aerobics thing tonight so let's see how that goes! incidentally, it's the last one i can make due to antenatal classes starting next week - wonder if I should try pilates instead?? Where are you doing your classes? Also, I keep forgetting to ask you about cloth slings! I will buy some fabric soon... Julia - did you mean you want to write into your birth plan that you do want an epidural or don't? I think generally if you want one in labour you can have one - and usually you'd be advised against saying in your plan that you definitely do not want an epidural under any circumstances! x
  22. howdy folks, i'm interested in the sleep seminar too - think the only dates on the list I can't do are 12th and 17th Nov. see you in the electrical cafe in a bit! :) i wonder if they do apple strudel...
  23. thanks for the tip... it sounds awful! I did ceramics painting recently in a place in West London which was superb. I'm trying le chandelier at the moment as think afternoon tea would be great and it looks like a lovely venue, but it depends on whether the few mothers involved are going to want to bring their baby along - they said they don't really have space for prams and don't usually allow little ones in their private room! Otherwise I think it's going to have to be a pub... I haven't been to many around here though, so appreciate the advice on that. Generally I'd prefer somewhere in ED where it's easy to get to / from my own home and for others to get there by public transport.
  24. Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I will have a look into All Fired Up and a couple of the local pubs - everyone will be travelling out from London so needs to be somewhere relatively easy to get to. Do you have to do ceramics painting at AFU or can you just use it as a venue?? I've been to two baby showers before - organised by Americans no less - and felt a bit put off by all the baby games, but I'll just ask my friend who's organising to go easy on that bit! I figure it's a good way of seeing all my friends before baby arrives when it's really difficult to squeeze in lots of individual meetups (and I'm rubbish at turning down invitations!). The majority of my friends don't have babies though so won't be able to do the advice book - they're much more likely to be in the cute-but-slightly-useless-gift-buying camp!
  25. Hello, My friends are insisting we need to have a baby shower, but I'm thinking it would probably not be a good idea to do this my own diddy little house - especially seeing as we are planning a home birth and I'll be over 37 weeks by then. Does anyone have any ideas / suggestions of where in East Dulwich might be a good place to go? Possibly one that supplies nibbles or afternoon tea... or perhaps just a nice sized room for c. 15 people and we'll bring our own? Worried it may be a little tricky as things may be getting booked out for Christmas season! Thanks. :)
