Ideas on how to spend first birthday?
bobbly replied to kapaxiana's topic in The Family Room Discussion
however you choose, so long as you both enjoy it, anything to relieve the stress of the day before! -
Watched the film and it was so reminiscent of when i was growing up. Lovely to see, when we were kids we just piled our bikes up at the end of the street to stop cars... love the idea of the kids taking control of their own environment, very difficult for people to go against.. worked for us!

Haven't watched the film yet as about to go out, but I have been thinking the very same thing myself for some time. I live in a cul de sac, its very quiet and there are lots of kids on my street, I wanted to propose the idea, but didn't want to come across as cheeky, so I am very pleased about this. Having read the responses I believe there are stewards there which may feed into the 'fear culture' that we seem to find ourselves in. I would be more than happy if kids from busier streets in the area could come to our cul de sac to play, extend it to a wider circle.

Thank you Katie, I think it probably is...great.

recommend a good homeopath for treating child with allergies
bobbly replied to bobbly's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I think that my original posting for homeopath recommendations has been satisfied. Thanks for those recommendations. Bearing in mind that I did not once use the term 'alternative' (Kes) I would like to draw this to a close now, mainly because I do not have the time to read and respond to messages,(where do you all find the time?!) I thank all contributors, and sign off. Unless of course someone knows an orthodox cure that they can recommend, so far there have been none proposed.... -
recommend a good homeopath for treating child with allergies
bobbly replied to bobbly's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Interesting posts, yes it is true that I am not entirely convinced that it will work for such severe allergies, but it seems that the medical profession in this country is really not up to date with allergies. They do not fully understand why it is a growing problem, nor how to deal with it. Research on Allergies is not as advanced here as it is in America and Australia. The prick tests are often inaccurate and the food challenges are a complete joke. It doesn't seem to occur to them that giving a child one particular unshelled nut that has been in contact with other nuts is not a particularly safe food challenge. I would ideally love to travel to get him treated elsewhere as this country seems to invest very little into this growing problem. Its worth remembering that pregnant women were advised not to eat nuts during pregnancy for fear of the child developing an allergy. They eventually realised that this was a mistake due to the growing number of allergic children in this country compared to countries where nnuts are prevalent in their diet, and do not have any where near the numbers of allergic children in this country. The advice now is to eat nuts. My son has had the best results for his eczema from manuka honey, (which is now being used in hospitals for healing wounds incidently with great results) oats in the bath, shea butter from the lovely woman on north cross road market.. I think that the orthodox medicine has achieved amazing things, but some countries are still 'catching up'. For example This recent discovery that a high number of children are found to be deficient in Vit D has been widely recognised in France for many years and give recommend it to children up to the age of 5 I think. Here we have just realised it. I am also conviinced that this recent cough that has been doing the rounds is whooping cough, but that's another subject i think so i'll leave it there! My point is that pharmaceutics have been praised for getting rid of lots of diseases with injections, yet as has been argued for many years is not necessarily the case, Docs just don't look for it because they don't believe they exist...perhaps orthodox medicine still has a long way to go, and should not be so lauded over complimentary medicine. Hope this makes sense....I've got loads to do but had the urge to respond. Hope my point comes across! -

Thanks for all the posts dismissing homeopathy. I have had my reservations also, what keeps me going is that it has had a positive effect for some people, and cured some illnesses considered to be life long. If they were cured by the placebo effect then that's good enough for me, as there were no side effects. -

My son eats most things, loves his food but has an allergy to eggs, seeds, nuts, egg, diary and all fish bar tuna. does anyone have any good recipes they are willing to share? Mealtimes at home are very difficult as my partner is a vegetarian. If anyone has any great recipes that I could feed my family I would really appreciate it. I'm In the process of making up a 2 week menu so that I don't have to think too much about it, but it's hard to find inspiration. If your recipe happens to contain egg and fish, and nuts send it anyway as I could probably avoid them if they are not an essential ingredient. I could use your recipe as a starting point. We don't do child meals and he loves food with a kick so feel free to send whatever tastes good. Many thanks, and happy new year.

Though I understand that this forum should not be replace GP services. However like many my son has that dreaded cough, severe mucus build up and vomiting virus. Doc says nothing to be done but rest and fluids. I have bought some ivy thyme for the cough which usually works well, and some sambucol for the mucus..... my sonn wont drink honey lemon garlic and cider vinegar... does anyone have any other natural remedies (or orthodox) that has worked quickly,.,, can't bear the thought of him being this ill for so long, its already beenn more than a month. i should add two gp's have seen him, havn't checked his chest, but say to ride it out with fluids and rest

I agree with you Juno about choosing your battles. I think there is something to be said for those that don't bow down to authority, its the rebels that may change things for the future, love my spirited child's ability to question and reason and wouldn't want to dampen his spirit, so long as he's not hurting anyone.

Agree with both anna and b100. I found talking to my spirited child helped a lot and detailing what i wanted rather than what i didn;t want. have to say though that school really changed things it could be that more time at nursery might help. He needed more stimulation and outside play constantly, which of course is impossible when you are doing it alone mostly. The books raising an emotionally intelligent child helped a lot too.Other books have been recommended on the forum (if you ever find the time to read). best of luck, its a toughie

Parents meet-up at St Pauls/Occupy London?
bobbly replied to zelda100's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Zelda Sorry could not make it but would have been interesting to take a look at what's going on. The MIL went at the weekend and said there is some really progressive ideas buzzing around. You seem to have a lot of hits, presumably you had a lot of interest? -
I heard a snippet on radio about a man who had written a book detailing domestic alternatives to commercial ingredients book. This book would basically detail the ingredients you might have in your home which would replicate a commercial food product. It was a long time ago admittedly, but i wondered if anyone knew of it?

I agree with Yak, sounds like strange advice to me. I second going to kings and seeing the allergy consultants thhere. They cann do prick tests (though not always conclusive) but more helpful than feeding him foods from a jar. If he starts to swell around the eye, then antihistimine will help reduce swelling and itching. Any overall rash and swelling, then yes, like you said, straight down to A&E. I agree with Fuschia, sometimes it's the proteins in foods that cause an allergic reaction, also check the detergent and perhaps go for a non bio one like surcare or concentrated bio liquid? He may be reacting to that also, or maybe house mites? It could also mean that the lack of distraction at night makes him more aware of feeling itchy and there starts the cycle. good luck, its a long road, I'm right there with you

Allergies - why so many these days?
bobbly replied to new mother's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Saffron, yes i am interested in the geeky stuff, so please post or pm me the details. I think it may be antibiotics may be an interesting angle, I wonder how many children were exposed to them before the age of 1 and how frequently. Also I do wonder about weaning before 6 months before the gut is able to cope with the introduction of foods. I thiink my child may have allergies to both of these factors, he was given foods at 4 months, this advice has now changed to minimum of 6 months. It is said that children should eat dirt, children who livve on farms far less susceptible. Apparently let your child eat dirt from 18 months and upto the age of 5. I have read a lot about gut and its relationship with allergies and other health problems, including mental. I have not brought my child up in a super clean home environment, I don't believe in killing all germs, nor using very much bleach (apprently related to asthma), but I do not use sprays. That is not to say that every child who has early introduction of anti biotics will have allergies, but those who are suspectible more likely to develop them? I am about to do some research on finding a cure for mmy son by the age of 10. That is my goal, so any info would be greatly appreciated. I really believe it was the amount of antibiotics that my son was given before the age of 6 weeks! anyone else with a similar experience?
