  1. Bob, I completely agree, and my issue is not with these stats, which as we all know are manipulated to in the most positive light. The issue is more that our local counciller keeps on referring to these crime figures in such an insensitive way that its started to get my goat. Instead of looking at ways to stop this happening in the future and perhaps liase with local police and law enforcement these statistics are being thrown around as though to say " look what a great job we're doing". When I was burgled all that we were told by JB is that there are DNA property marking kits available from the local police, and that was it. Suprisingly this was a little too late. These guys should be working on crime prevenmtion- everyone should be aware that these kits are available and not have them given out after no one has any posessions left. In normal circumstances fine, shout these figures from the rooftops they are goos and positive for the area, but for god sakes when people are talking of having all of their valuable posessions stolen week in week out, the last thing a local councilletr should be saying is sorry, but crime has been reduced in the area, so im not too bothered" which is how this guy is starting to come across. People want solutions or at least someone to be making an effort to find a solution, not relying on some manipulated figures to rely on to do less work
  2. Concita, im really sorry to hear of this, and your right it is happening far too much. James, your comments on some of these threads are to be honest getting quite annoying. You keep banging on about the reduction in crime rates, however no one is seeing them in ED, all we are hearing about and experiencing lately is an increase in this activity, the conversations I have had with Police since we were burgled have also alluded to this, that there has been a sharp rise in this type of crime locally. Instead of you trying to show what a great job your doing in reducing crime figures, why dont you start working with the police and local residents to try and stop this frequent occurance from happening and catching the guys who are doing it week in week out. Fine you have arranged to have a few DNA property kits distributed but im not seeing anything else being done, and the increase in Burglaries seems to support that. I find it a little insensitive and insulting for you to be defending your local crime statistics (which really arent based on much) when people that you are supposed to be representing are being robbed of their personal possessions and being made to feel scared in their own homes. Concita, like I said I really sympathise with you, its a horrible thing to happen and makes it hard to come home every night for a few weeks, but it does get easier believe me. And apologies for hijacking your post somewhat.
  3. What areas is this happening in?
  4. WrightC, the devices candj is talking about are availible free from the victim support service. When we were broken into the other week the victim support guys asked if we wanted a security assessment, which I took up. The guy was great- he cam in and fitted new locks, a chain on the door, an anti kicking strip on the front door and gave us several vibration detecting alarms for our windows, and a new smoke alarm, all of which were free of charge- its definitely worth having them around and see what they can do for you. We knew our security wasnt up to scratch and had ordered new windows and doors, but unfortunatley we had only been living there for 6 weeks so we hadnt had them all fitted at that time, but the security assessment was well worth having. I do agree with you however that this seems to be happening far to much in the area. The police have suggested that it may be the same people working the area and are likely to be re offenders who have just been released from prison because of the sudden rise in burgalries and the professional way in which each one is being done. They said tehy were going to increase patrols in the area but since we were broken into I have not actual seen one policeman patroling, but a hell of a lot of dodgy characters hanging around (alot more now as I am suspicous of everyone), but it does seem like ED is an easy target- most people are out at work in the day and the streets are pretty empty. Perhaps a petition sshould be organised or something to increase police patrols in the area? Or perhaps lobby for more cctv coverage locally?
  5. Really sorry to hear this Lucy. There seem sto be a pattern emerging, as tehre have been burglaries at the same time (Tuesday daytime) every week for a couple of weeeks now. I really hope that they get caught soon.
  6. Would this thread of even been started if it was anything other than a Wetherspoons opening in ED? I find it hard to believe that anyone would really be bothered if the company that owned the Bishop was opening a new pub in place of the Vale, or even to some extent an all bar one. So i guess that does say something about peoples perceptions of Wetherspoons and the connotations that the cheap drinks have with crime and anti social behaviour. It does not matter how affluant an area is or isnt there does seem to be a trend in many Wetherspoons up and down the country. You only have to look at Wetherspoons in Balham to see that despite being an area considered to be relatively affluant the alcoholics and youths drinking in there really effect the impression of the immediate area. That said I have been to certain Wetherspoons where they are quite pleasent and attractive because of their prices, however all of these,I have to say have been away from residential areas ie they have been in shopping complexes eg in Finchley road. The majority of Wetherspoons "locals" in my experience have just been a magnet for winos, re faced old men and young, loud mouth teens looking to get drunk quick, who then cant handle their drink.
  7. Unfortunately not- wasnt enough take up im afraid
  8. ClareC Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Does anyone know if there is a service available > locally for advice re existing home security and > how to improve it? There is a service taht is provided by the local police- they cam to mine last week after beeing burgled, they are very helpful and will go through things with you. I should imagine it is the same people, as I am not far away from there at all. and sounds liek a similar MO.

    Burgled

Certainly would be happy to go to court over this. Just hope that they catch them. Unfortunatley every day that goes past the actual chanced of them doing it get smaller.
  12. I second that. We were burgled on Tuesday daytime whilst at work- http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,523919 Whilst this has been a massive shock to us, and been quite disturbing in terms of safety in our home and the feeling that our privacy has been invaded, we are still both very positive about our move to ED. We have been here for over 6 weeks and have loved every minute of it. We used to live in Balham and liked it their to, but the friendly people around ED, teh good transport links, the variety of bars and eateries and things to do in the area, meanthat despite what has happened to us personally we are still really happy in teh area. In fact as a knee jerk rection to the robbery we disucssed renting our place for a few months and moving soemwhere else, however we would only have consiederd moving somewhere else in ED. Obviouskly a day or two has passed and the knee jerk has subsided somewhat now that we have had time to reflect so will be staying in our place. I guess the point is that despite being victims of crime Ed still has a lot going for it that outweigh the bad things, Its only through forums like this and people talking to each otehr and taking notice of their neighbours and their houses that crime will be reduced. Its a nice area, its always going to attract criminals, but they can be beaten. Ed is still an amazing place to live.
  13. Martin, I sypathise with you completely- our flat was broke into on monday and all of our values possessions were stolen, there just seems to be too much of this going on in the area at the moment.

    Burgled

Thanks for all your kind words, it will just take time to get over. The worst part is the thought of someone in our flat, going through our belongings, and being in tehre for such a long time. The police think that they must of been in there for about 30 minutes the amount of detail tehy went to and stuff they went through/ They jumped over the fences at the back of the house and in through our back door, then gathered everything in the front bedroom before passing it out of the window to an accomplice who loaded it into a van. Its so treassuring for both me and my girlfriend to know that there are so many nice people in teh area, everyone has been great, its just such a shame that these non ED'ites seem to target the area because they know people will be in work and will have nice things at home to steal. We knew that the flat wasnt as secure as wed like it to be, in fact we have had 3 guys round recently to give us quotes on new doors and windows, but having been there only for a few weeks meant that we just havent been able to do anything about it in such a short space of time. All i can say is please everyone make sure taht your security is tight and hopefully we can force these people to go elsewhere in the future.

    Damp

Does anyone know who is responsoble for damp in a leasehold property. Is it the freeholder or leaseholder, or both?
  17. Correct me if im wrong but ll they are noty allowed to do is serve alcohol past 11pm, they are fully entitled under the terms of the license to play music, as they have a license for that, as long as it is inside. The license does not stipulate any time that the venue must close, only that there should be no new admissions past 12am. So strictly speaking, they have alicense for their activities unless alcohol is being SOLD, and no one seems to be accusing them of serving past this time.
  18. Thats a pretty libellous comment there DJKQ, especially for someone who has come on here and ofefred his own personal email address to anyone who has an issue. You obviously just have way to much time on your hands and like getting involved in things that dont concern you. Dont get me wrong its great that you are happy to get involved and offer advice to Sylvie who started this thread, thats what this forum is for, but I think you have now taken it far enough. The issue obviously doesnt concern you directly and you have put across your views on the matter. Its time now for the people who it does concern to take charge of the situation, follow your advice and talk to the licensee, Davide or the council themselves. To starting accusing someone of bs-ing people istaking it a little far, when he has shown good faith in entering into conversation.
  19. Well done Davide, its very admirable that you have attempted to recify the problem and offered to talk it through with people.
  20. This place is amazing if your after a beach holiday. I went there recently and they cater for singles really well. Getting everyobne involved in activities and organising group dinners etc for singles http://www.lasourceresort.com/?gclid=CJOiuOCWtKMCFRQ_lAodgQjq5Q
  21. I did contact the guy about Tuesday rugby but he said that they have died out and dont happen any more. Mixed touch would be fine, its just about getting some decent numbers, we would need at least 10 I would of thought to make it worth while.
  22. I Just wanted to give another recommendation for Dalyan, it is such a beautiful place and not liek any of teh other touristy med resorts, much more relaxed and down to earth. Food is great and everyone is really friendly.
  23. Happy to play someime next week?
  24. If there are other neighbours that are also annoyed with this you may want to do just a general letter and post it through everyones door on the street from " the residents association" or something so that it does not look like you are just singling him out.
