What is a good age gap between No 1 and 2?
candj replied to Fi from West Dulwich's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Just echoing what everyone else said, I think there are pros and cons of all age gaps - if children are further apart the older ones can be more helpful and understanding, but just when one is starting to be more independent you have a newborn or if children are close together it's more difficult in the beginning for the parents. My two are 2 1/2 years apart which is lovely as my oldest has started to pay attention to her younger sister and they NOW play together and have some sort of interaction (even if it's fighting 50% of the time). Currently expecting No.3 in January which means the age gap will be 3 1/2 years from my youngest and I'm sure it will be completely different as now both girls are in school so hopefully not a lot of jealousy will ensue as they will be busy with their schedules. Also my eldest daughter is already planning things for the baby and deciding on what names she likes whilst my 3 year old is not really sure what to make of it! -

In praise of the apples on Crystal Palace Road
candj replied to TonyQuinn's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Apples, pears and (I think) plums on our street. I see people picking them now, but you definitely need a ladder. -
Hi Chris, Dulwich Books in West Dulwich on Croxted Road always have boxes in the back of the shop for people to help themselves to. In fact, they have a sign in their shop saying feel free to take them as they obviously have too many. Just FYI. And welcome to ED.

Recommendation for toddler table and chairs
candj replied to EmmaCC's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I too like the Mammut range from Ikea. They come in round or square and have a slight lip on the edge so that any spills or pretend tea party accidents don't immediately go on the floor. It's light, easy to assemble and not such a horrifying piece of plastic in the house. You can get the stools which might be a bit wibbly for a two year old or the chair with the back on it. -
Recommendation for birthday present for 2 year old

Anything from the Early Learning Centre - easel with large roll of paper and finger paints on one side and chalk board on the other, pretend things like microwave, cooker, washing machine, iron and ironing board, etc. -
m&m fairy, I don't think Fuschia meant anything other than she was sad to see James leave (as I am) and that we all HOPE what we love about Jack's (child friendly, good food, good local location for us) will stay the same. Best of luck to your friends on their new business. When will it be open and will it be closed during school half term holidays?

I broke up with a boyfriend who then went out with Cameron Diaz for the next 7 years until she dumped him because she got a bit famous. I still think I did him a favour. Sisters of Mercy? Yuck!

I agree with Fuschia, and would buy the high back booster. Our nearly 6 year old has been using one since she was 3 and we just bought another one for our youngest. I think by law you have to use this over the seat only booster - depending on your child's weight. When we used to have difficulty in getting the children into the stage two seats (think that's the one you currently have) I would have to ask them to climb into it themselves, take winter coats off and extend the straps as far as possible. Also, if their heads stick out of the top, they have outgrown the seat.

what makes teenagers get up ???
candj replied to womanofdulwich's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Sorry WOD I can't provide any advice as my mine are still very young, but I wanted to say that THIS is what all of us mums and dads with sleepless, night owl babies/toddlers have to look forward to! Hope you get it sorted, is he too young for coffee??? -
Is that the same as the creche that used to be in the leisure centre? Ages ago they had a drop off creche which was fantastic for going to the gym but I know that it was closed during the swimming pool renovations. I used to think the premises of what became the Foxtons would have made a good mini Gambado type soft play.

Yes Sean, and husbands too!

Really sorry to hear this. Can also recommend using the Smart Water/DNA kits provided by the police to mark your property. You just have to contact the local police and they'll bring it around and show you how to use it.

Hi Liz- I had a blackberry for a week and was so frustrated with it that I too switched to an iPhone. It's much easier to type on and our laptops are all Macs so just seemed like the natural way forward. Also, the iPhone has great games for the kiddies!

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
candj replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
To brandnewguy - in our case, we also have daily nanny, housekeeper and husband works from home a few days a week so after recycling we still manage to fill our bin (it's not overflowing, but it's full). Can't be nappy sacks because neither child is in nappies ::o -

James Barber Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The new Labour run Southwark Council is proposing > to move to fortnightly rubbish collections and > make the garden waste collections weekly and add > food composting. James - this would be such a bad idea. In our experience, there are only several times in the year when our brown bins are overflowing with garden waste - spring and autumn when we are clearing the garden and/or planting). Fortnightly garden waste collection is perfect for us and what looks like most of our road. However, I couldn't imagine rubbish collections being reduced to fortnightly as we are a family of 4 (almost 5) our bin is filled within a week so the timing works. Anything less would be a recipe for disaster. However, having said that, our small blue bins for glass and cans is certainly too small, but we wouldn't be able to fit a bigger bin in our small front garden. In California we are given three bins for rubbish the same size as our green and brown bins here. One is black for rubbish that cannot be recycled, one is green for both garden waste and compostable food waste and the last one is blue for anything recyclable from glass bottles to paper and cans. Someone else on the receiving end sorts through and organises it further before sending to the recycling plant. This always seems like a good idea, but again I don't think our small Victorian front gardens would be able to have three large bins. Best, -C -
Newborn hearing screening - does it make sense?
candj replied to Sanne Panne's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Oh I too forgot about the baby being asleep part!! Luckily we were first for our appointment, thank God. -
We used The Party Belles for our 3 year old's birthday when she absolutely desperately needed to have Snow White at her party. Becky was the one who came as Snow White and she was lovely with the children although you can request different characters. The fee includes a gift for the birthday girl/boy, pass the parcel (parcel and gifts provided), balloon animals, face painting (done when the children are eating) and singing, dancing and games. Well worth having her babysit twenty 3 year olds for two hours, in my opinion!
