  4. Good point about environmental issues re. Air con. It might be more environmentally friendly than lots of single occupancy cars with their air con on though?
  5. Oh, and building on the bus theme, air conditioning on the buses. The thought of getting on a bus for a long journey in the summer is very unappealing. The Brighton buses are also very well marketed and sell themselves as a day out, rather than an endurance test.
  6. Routes to ride bikes safely and not be subjected to car fumes. Something that Brighton is also great for is the amount of space that is given over to pedestrians and cyclists which means for those who can, cycling and walking become not just viable but appealing and preferable to cars and buses.
  7. That?s terrible, I?m sorry for your friend, but glad he?s ok. That junction is very dangerous for pedestrians, the council need to address it as a priority. I hate crossing there.
  8. Hi both , we are planning one for the 31st October so will post details here once it?s confirmed. After that, we are planning to do one on the last Sunday every month at 10am. So if you have suggestion for locations, do let me know!
  9. Is it linked to cctv? Can?t imagine people take any notice unless it seems likely they will be caught. whodhavethoughit Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Southwark Council have put up a no fly tipping > sign on the wall where the majority of fly tipping > in this street is done. 10. I'm not claiming to be an expert on this type of thing but I'm pretty sure there are mechanisms that can be used if the will is there, especially if the nursery's licence to operate depends on it. For example, my son was recently at a holiday club where we were told in no uncertain terms that if our children were found to have any form of nuts in the lunch box, we would automatically be cancelled from the club. And given that we don't think there would be a lot of cases, I think it could be contained to a level where it would not make a significant impact to traffic levels, as even the few who would otherwise defy the rules and drive would be put off by the prospect of losing their nursery place or receiving a parking fine (which would not be difficult for the council to police given the restricted window within which it is likely to happen).
  11. I think the existing nursery?s fear set in when they we?re losing customers during the height of the pandemic and were under capacity. They are also going to be worried about increased pollution (as am I) so there would need to be a watertight governance around the no car policy. But I do think this is possible if the council and new nursery work together on this. northernmonkey Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > They really haven't - the nursery next door has > (understandably) run a huge campaign against this, > and i do have sympathy with their position. 12. Just seen a post on ED mums (Facebook) who can?t get a nursery place and has been told waitlists for the nurseries she has tried have at least 24 month waitlists. So it would seem that the shortage of childcare in the area has resumed business as usual status.
  13. A state school is different to a private nursery that has been told that it cannot allow parents to drive. A school is compelled to provide an education to its pupils so when parents say they have no other way of getting their kids to school (which they do), the school is in a pretty difficult position. If a nursery has been explicit upfront that parents cannot drive (which this one will have to do), they are in a much stronger position to enforce this condition, especially given the more commercial nature of the relationship. Furthermore, as people have already said, dropping kids off at nursery is pretty unrealistic if you are relying on parking illegally, you can?t quickly drop them off from the middle of the road. I?m not saying their will be zero traffic created, no one can say this. But I do think it will be a very small amount if the existing EDG. nursery is anything to go by- the vast majority of parents walk or cycle (and they have never said you can?t drive, it?s just parking is pretty much impossible and most people live nearby).
  14. Totally agree Nigello, I go out most days on my own. I expect some people feel a bit uncomfortable doing it alone so doing it as part of a group gives people the confidence to get involved.
  15. Hi, we haven't got one scheduled but when we next meet (Plastic Free East Dulwich), I can suggest this area. Are you part of local community groups (street whatsapps etc) so we could promote it and get local residents involved? We have all the equipment so if we can generate some interest in the local area, there's nothing to stop us setting one up.
  16. As a parent at the existing nursery next door, my observation is that there are parents who drive to the nursery but they are in the very small minority, and there has never a stipulation that you can?t drive. I think you?d have to be mad to sign up for a nursery where not only you have been told you can?t drive, but it is practically impossible to park your car, if your intention is to drive. That said, given the shortage of places, some people might do it as a temp measure before they can get a place at a more suitable nursery as there will be a sudden abundance of places in the early days and people can get very desperate when they need childcare.
  17. My child attended the nursery next door when it first opened. At the beginning, I think there were quite a few kids who lived further away as a new nursery will have places and this is very rare, so people will come from some distance to use it. Over time, when you have to put kids down when you first get pregnant (reality around here), most are likely to be from nearby and therefore able to walk etc, especially when parking is difficult.
  18. Although Nigello, as I?m sure you agree, until Southwark sorts out it?s woeful approach to rubbish disposal on high streets, more people with no access to bins on Lordship Lane is not a good idea.
  19. Hi all This is just a quick reminder that there will be a community clean at Dawson's Hill this coming Sunday (11th July). The clean is hosted by Plastic Free East Dulwich and we will be meeting at the Dunstan's Road entrance at 10. All litter picking equipment will be provided (Litter pickers, gloves and sacks) so you just need to bring yourselves, water and suitable clothing. All are welcome so we hope to see some of you there https://www.instagram.com/p/CQgDjLvHL8O/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
  20. I know this isn?t exactly what you are looking for but it can be a good way to meet people who are into to walking. https://www.capitalwalkers.org.uk/other-inner-london-ramblers-groups.html

  22. Hi all Plastic Free East Dulwich is organising a litter pick at Dawson's Hill on Sunday 11th July at 10 am. Equipment will be provided so you just need to show up with sunscreen (if it's sunny), water and suitable clothing. We will meet at the Dunstan's road entrance at 10 am so if you'd like to get involved, we'll see you there. PM me if you have any questions Rachel
  23. I would imagine that if you did a quick straw poll with people who have sat in Dulwich Square, many do not live on the wealthy streets you refer to. And like most of Dulwich Village, it?s precisely because it?s a ?nice area? that it?s a destination for people from further afield. That?s how nice places work.
