Wardy: To get this clear, you visited it 50+ years ago and you feel it should stay that way? Ever heard of rose tinted glasses :-)

Waitrose or M&S TYPE supermarket - do we want one on LL?
TJ replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I don't see how a small supermarket such as waitrose or m&S will damage LL. I would in fcat assume the opposite to be the case. It may reduce the que at William Rose a bit though... :-) -

Waitrose will do wonders for house prices. I'm all for it. :-P -
Northcross Market to open on Sundays?
TJ replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I agree with the changes and closure if necessary. To talk about shabby though, can anything be done about the space at the back of Budgens and the sub station? The tatty mess of supermarket junk, London Electricity dump and slowly rotting Ford banger are horrible. Surely this is a space that could be used more effectively - or at least screened off? -
The London Door Company make great doors & very secure.

Potential intruder on Blackwater Street?
TJ replied to snatedawg's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
if you see fingers poking through (covered by a cloth as they are trying to avoid leaving prints), take the hammer you leave by the door, and him them with all your might. :-) -
Can I also add to the general discussion the impact that CPZ have on small and local business. I am talking drop off places such as DIY, newsagents, post offices, libraries even. We really need to protect the shops and jobs in the area and CPZ will simply divert shoppers to other areas on their journeys - or put people off non essential stops. Its like a mini congestion zone effect and really not what ED needs.

I really hand on heart can say in my opinion, Southwark - stick your CPZ up your arse and long may it stay there.

Yet Another Crash on Barry Road - Underhill Road Junction

sounds like a reasonable solution. -
Early morning trip to Gatwick Airport...
TJ replied to caumacau's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I would in all honesty, considering cost of rail tickets, bus delays and the time, take a cab direct. 1 cab = ?40 2x Express tickets ?31 -
The Horniman have funds for a new outdoor development project. If they were really concerned (and they would have been aware of the potential removal of funding) they would have shelved it this summer. Money will be found. If it means each of us actually put money in the box at the entrance when we visit (rather than shuffling past looking at anything but) it will be fine. Dig deep people.

Yet Another Crash on Barry Road - Underhill Road Junction
TJ replied to trentk69's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
James - The issue is not perhaps the speed travelled, more the speed you are allowed to travel at that particular point? To my earlier thought about a raised 4 way hump like the Goodrich/ Barry crossing. I don't hear about this area being the same blackspot although of course the road is wider / trees fewer. The raised hump at Underhill / Barry would slow traffic by approx 10mph to 20mph which is no bad thing and would maintain the 30mph limit on the rest of the road. Just a thought for you - it would seem the electorate and local residents would like to see action and some form of traffic calming at this point. Could be a strong campaigning point with good local support. Not that i am playing politik or anyfink. -
Yet Another Crash on Barry Road - Underhill Road Junction
TJ replied to trentk69's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I will, hand on heart say I hate nothing more than speed bumps, particularly the ones which even take the bottom off 4x4's, however, on this occasion, I really cannot see why Barry road does not have a raised four way 'bank' at the junction of barry / Underhill as it does at Goodrich / Barry. Surely a simple way to slow people down while maintaining traffic flow in other areas. I have previously wondered from a legal standpoint, that if authorities have been lobbied about a dangerous junction and there was a subsequent death, if this could be used to pursue the authorities for corporate manslaughter or gross negligence? Just a thought.... -
My mate cheerfully describes himself as a Bad Jew - as he says, he digs the swine! He sees religion as a social thing really. In fact - I remember when I was living in Saudi, they were not shy of tucking into whisky and pork as soon as they stepped out of the country. Bahrain was their ibiza! First day of the new Dulwich Swimming Pool
TJ replied to Weegee's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If the pool temo stays constant, but the outside temperature drops, the pool will feel warmer! Try swimming in the sea on a cold day - the water always feels warmer. I've seen this a few times. i think it is a local politico living in Dulwich as i see them heading down red post hill and through the village.

This was outside my office last night. A young guy on a scooter going up the bus lane. A car cut across the bus lane to dive into the car park and there was a collision. Confirmed as a fatality. All very sad and unnecessary.

James - Does the agreement to raise the temperature also stretch to the air temp? 21/22C is way too cold for me to even consider taking the kids. Also, I don't mean to sound awkward, but doesn't the manager of the centre try out their facilities? Why does it take a furious reaction from the public to get anyone to do anything in this fucking country? -
To concur with Marmora Man, the planning authority must take into consideration that main roads must maintain traffic flow ata reasonable rate or very quickly people turn off into side roads to try to cut through. This is demonstrated by the sizeable rise in traffic cutting through the Wood Vale, Forest Hill, Lordship lane triangle during the recent street works, sewer collapse, water works etc etc. Lets by all means make sure pedestrians (including me) can access the park easily, but not at the constant detriment of the thousands of people travelling by public and private means up Forest Hill road. Lets keep London moving, not bog it down due to well meaning but misguided political masturbation (a possible deliberate use of the word to irritate the politicos).

Keep reporting please. A pain though it is, please please report it. Eventually those useless boys in blue will be forced to do something even if it is pontificate about what falls under 'reasonable allocation of police resources'. For those regularly targeted, keep a ?3 can of petrol to hand but use it up within 3 months as petrol goes off (yes it does!)

Proposed cycle superhighway to run down Lordship Lane
TJ replied to benmorg's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
What a blue strip will do in the long term is anyones guess, but I suspect it will become grubby, dug up for a new water main and never repainted, ignored and eventually forgotten. As for the safety in numbers argument for cycles and cycle highways, i am seeing more and more arguments for the opposite. There seems to be a lot of jostling for space and many cyclists are swinging out wildly into bus lanes (bus lanes are shared with motorbikes, buses & taxis). We all need to learn a little civility to get along in this big city, not mark out our boundaries and guard them so aggressively.
