Also, have you looked for a nursery near work, if you don't work in the area? My daughter went to a lovely Montessori nursery near Waterloo when I worked in central London. xx

In addition to this Forum, there are several active Facebook forums in the area. Have a look at Nunhead Rocks, Forest Hill Mums, East Dulwich Mums, and SE4 Families. xx

Any recent experiences with Legoland?
Saffron replied to Saffron's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Long story short... change of work plans for me and Mr Saff meant we weren't able to squeeze in a trip over the half-term. However... blessing in disguise? Instead I've managed to book ahead for a short xmas break. I got a discount for a hotel room we'd never have booked otherwise bc they want crazy money usually. The drawback is that some rides won't be open, but I hope the novelty of being there over the xmas hols will make up for this. I'm wondering if there will still be massive queues for the rides that are open? Will we need the queue app? -
These dryers aren't super hygienic anyway. They micro-aerosolise bacteria remaining after handwashing. Then it's nicely inhalable and spread all around the room too. Charming.

I would really highly recommend that you try cooking on induction hobs before committing. I have cooked on gas, conventional electric, and induction. Personally, I don't like induction at all, but a lot of people do really like it. Some pros are that it's safe, efficient, and easy to clean. Some cons are that you need pans compatible with induction, or a converter plate (which cuts out the efficiency). It heats only marginally faster than modern electric hobs, and I didn't find that it's as easy to adjust as gas. But maybe you will find that you like it? Best to try first! xx

I'm looking at a daytrip to Legoland Windsor over the half-term. I know it's likely to be crowded, but we can't manage any other dates. Has anyone been recently? Do you have any tips? Little Saff is 7, and DH is not overly enthusiastic about theme parks (but he did promise a trip to Legoland AGES ago!) xx

Our nanny was a mature student, who has now graduated and moved on to work in her field of study. We originally found her through friends-of-friends. In addition to the Family Classifieds here on the Forum, there are some fairly active local Facebook forums. Have a look at neighbouring SE4 Families and Forest Hill Mums. Good luck! xx SueOrr0103 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Hi Saffron, > > A part time nanny does sound good. Keeping a 8yr old and 12 yr old from boredom in e.dulwich
Saffron replied to mary123's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Make slime? You can get the ingredients in the poundshop or Sainos. -
I would also be apprehensive about adding another nursery. In the same situation a few year back, we added a part time nanny, as I wanted Little Saff to have more one-on-one time with a single carer. I opted for a nanny because I wanted someone who would come to my house, which saved me a little time in the morning/evening. A nanny share or childminder would be cheaper, but then you might still have to drop-off and collect, depending on your arrangement. This worked out well for us, and the nanny took Little Saff to playgroups and museums. And she did crafts and projects around the house too. xx

When do you switch on your central heating on again for the Winter
Saffron replied to mary123's topic in The Lounge
Putting a jumper on does not work for me. Central heat is on the thermostat all year round. It comes on whenever the house feels cold to me, because I set it at a level that I like, and IDGAF if that means it comes on in June. -
> I believe the real > issue is that your education system is overwhelmed > with folks moving here from around the world and > can not keep up. It's quite unfortunate IMHO if this is what you were led to believe. The problem with UK schools is not about immigration or refugees. It's about systematic underfunding and poor management of central and local administrative systems. Even without immigration/refugees, many school districts (London boroughs in particular) would be having problems with delivering enough student places. This is a complex problem, but the system is not being overwhelmed by immigrants/refugees. It's being underfunded by idiots. *Some* people might even speculate it's being purposefully undermined in order to force privatisation by the back door. The UK is a wealthy country that could easily cope with refugees if schools were managed better. We're not being overwhelmed by folks moving to the UK. We're being undermined by homegrown numpties. ...speaking as someone with extensive experience of both US and UK education. I do hope you find a solution. There seem to be many good homeschooling groups in South London, if that's the direction you end up taking. xx

3-year old?s birthday party: venues and animation?
Saffron replied to DulwichLondoner's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Many churches have halls for rent, and you don't need to be a church member. I've been to many lovely birthday parties in church halls. They often have kitchen facilities and charge very reasonable rates, e.g. 30-45?/hr depending on the size or location. You could hire an entertainer or setup your own projector and speakers for a film. xx -
flu vaccination offered by school
Saffron replied to sweetgirl's topic in The Family Room Discussion
The risk of contracting flu from post-vaccination shedding is significantly lower than the risk of contracting the actual flu virus. Again, for balance: https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.oxfordahsn.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/PHE-factsheet-for-HCW-andheadteachers-on-LAIV-concerns-about-viral-shedding.pdf&ved=0ahUKEwjAmIej17nWAhVKmbQKHc3dB6sQFggfMAE&usg=AFQjCNGTIxqJw56oDXg7kd8qoyB4pC47aQ -

Behaviour - Melbourne Grove Medical Centre
Saffron replied to dulwichrich's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
"Bad" is a bit of loose label, but equally it doesn't seem like best practice for a doctor not to have spoken to the OP in person rather than relayed through the receptionist. Maybe follow-up with the practice on that point? There may be good reasons a doctor couldn't leave the offices to attend, and an ambulance was the best option. But is there really any good reason a doctor couldn't have spoken with the OP directly? Essential information can be lost or miscommunicated when given second-hand. -
Some greywater collection systems can be modified to compost from the kitchen sink, including material from an insinkerator (nice if you've got the time and space to set it up and maintain it, I guess?!). Otherwise the kitchen sink waste just forms part of the larger biomass that gets turned over in the general waste treatment processes (so avoid putting excess grease down the drain).
-
I used to have one years ago when I lived in the States. It seems like they were more common there at the time, but maybe they're gaining popularity here? If I were renovating our kitchen I would definitely add one, but it won't necessarily eliminate the need for a bit of composting or food waste recycling. If you search "insinkerator" on this forum, you can see previous kitchen threads where posters have mentioned it too. xx

flu vaccination offered by school
Saffron replied to sweetgirl's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Everyone is of course entitled to an opinion. However, in the modern healthcare field, the opinions of experts are based on the balance of the available evidence, not solely on personal belief. Although this strategy is not infallible, it has dramatically and measurably improved public health. This forum has very few limitations and is populated by a wide variety of intelligent and able posters who have a history of debating both passionately and diversely. I see no evidence that it is not an exellent place for progressive discussions on healthcare and other topics. And long may it continue so. -

I read about the spray, how it's administered and side effects. We decided to accept it for our daughter. There haven't been any problems. xx
