Thanks for the update Goldilocks, I guess I'll have to look for another space when going to DV, which is rarely.

There are parking spaces between the square of shame and Dekker. I used them the other week. I think the biggest challenge with the fire engine would have been the planters blocking off the square.

Pret A Manger coming to East Dulwich! (Now open)
Lebanums replied to KateFord's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I love Pret over any of the others. They also support the homeless and give away any unsold food to shelters. Bring on the ginger shots! -
I'm sorry you are having such a bad time. My wife experienced bad symptoms for a few years, anxiety, manic attacks to the point where an ambulance was called, sleepless nights, etc. The Dr was reluctant to offer the premium HRT, but now she is on the gel and pill. I also subscribed to magnesium supplements for her to help with sleep and manic episodes. I would recommend to see a hormone specialist exclusive of the GP recommendation if you can. I don't believe the GP's are expert enough on these things.

We gave up our brown bin when they started charging. We have fake grass & sweep the leaves in our front garden back onto the pavement.

Many of us were also still working from home, no car required. We have only just started going back to the office

SUV Tyres Deflated on Burbage Road
Lebanums replied to tomszekeres's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It's not illegal to own or drive an SUV. Surely they would be better targeting the manufacturers. Next, they'll block the chimneys of those with wood burners.. -

A theory could be that queueing cars take longer than previously to complete the journey from one end of EDG to the other, showing a count of less cars over a period. Where the other end cars are turning off because of queuing traffic?

I have noted that from attendance at past events. I don't believe they are using single-use plastics. You have to rent your reusable cup from the bar, there are no straws, and local food vans all use cardboard packaging and wooden or bamboo cutlery.

Of course, time is required to set up & complete the safety procedures. The other posts are on noise & litter, so for 3 days yes, there will be some noise, as there is when the circus of fairground is there. As for litter, I have seen many young groups drinking in Sexby Gardens over the course of the good weather, leaving their rubbish behind them, and using the bushes as their toilet, lots of families picnicking and not taking their rubbish with them. I don't believe the festival can take full accountability for litter.

There is noise from the fairground & circus, lots of litter around then also. But we can't hold them responsible for the actions of individuals. I have no interest in either, but adult enough to understand different strokes for different folks. Gala may be there for 3 days, the music cut off is 10.30 on a bank holiday, and people are guided out of the park through one entrance. They also actively raise funds for Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers (SCDAS).

I live 2 streets away. I have been a few times and love the vibe (especially when Horsemeat Disco are playing). When at home, don't find the noise intrusive. I have a choice, I can either let it bother me or not.

Straw poll - idling engines (buses, coaches, vans, etc.)
Lebanums replied to Nigello's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Every day outside Camberwell Cemetery, the 63 is idling in the waiting area. I also spotted someone pulled over on Peckham Rye last week on their phone with the engine running. I am a motorist, but very conscious of this. If I'm in traffic, I always have my start stop on so as not to cause further pollution, never mind use up expensive fuel. Unfortunately, it is not the case for the many. -
I am both a cyclist & driver & think like the other when I am out. Last night, I was walking down upland, crossed the road & glanced behind me to make sure there were no cars. Out of nowhere (I'm not sure I would call him a cyclist, more of a guy skulking around on a bike) passed me with a glare. I said to him, "how was I supposed to see you? You are wearing black and have no lights?" He turned back & I was hit with a torrent of abuse. He told me he would box my face in. I answered back with a sharp comment not to be intimidated by him. When I reached North Cross Road, he was then on the pavement coming my way, so I crossed the road to avoid him.
-
But the transport system is not easy to use if you are not based in the city. The lack of connections makes travel much longer than it needs to be. A few small changes, like extending the 63 to Honor Oak Park, say there is nowhere for the bus to turn, but there is the one-way system at the bottom of the road. I was talking about the LTN's making it more harmful for others, pushing the pollution into other streets & around schools. Choosing who gets cleaner air & who doesn't has only divided the area. It is a right, not a privilege.
-
Only because more of us are working from home and spending less days in the office. Only those who have to go to in to work have been doing so.
-
The bottom line is that the LTN's were supposed to drive a change in behaviours, and that is not happening. Instead of trying to make it more difficult to drive, public transport should be more accessible and timely to other neighbourhoods/boroughs, not just the city, and the shift should happen naturally. I get there will always be people who do not want to give up their car, as has been said many times. But many of us want to make that shift without making it more difficult or unsafe for others.
-
The roads get quieter when the schools are off... I don't see that active travel has increased because of the LTN measures. I see it has increased because people have been working from home and able to get out walking or on their bike.
-
Do we feel the data is comparable? 2019 was pre pandemic, people were going about their daily lives no WFH. From 2020 onwards, people have been working from home and not required the use of their cars. I would love to fast forward a year or two when we are all back in offices, and those who are currently walking their kids to school resort to having to drop off again. Most of us are not anti LTN, just anti the failed measures currently in place. The council needs to look at improvements for all and consult the public on what is best, since we are the everyday users. Also, TFL are reducing bus routes, and some trains have been cut. How is that helping reduce congestion?
-
Agree that busses are fairly cheap, but unless you want to spend most of your day getting around the city to work, it's quicker to take the train/tube. The cap of a daily ticket is way more than what is spent on petrol and yearly, way above costs for a car.
-
Nigello you are absolutely correct about creating new bus routes etc! However I believe that car ownership is cheaper than public transport. Yes, there are savings to be made by buying a monthly or weekly pass, but you have to have the disposable income at hand to afford that. There will always be people who will not want to move away from a car, no matter what but if the price of public transport was reduced, I believe that would make a difference. For many of us, it is about cost, and the answer is not to increase costs for motorists, especially now cleaner technology and fuel are available, and it will continue to improve.
