  1. They take significant decisions re planning and charge money to those of us who live within the area. Much like a local authority. Would like to think people taking such decisions can be held to account. Basic part of a democracy.
  2. Oh dear. Didn't know that. Have had one for a year and never asked. I do hate DE. Exactly how are they held accountable?
  3. power was off in LL just up from library - plus big hole where they are fiddling around with cables.
  4. me too - sort of relieved not the phone...
  5. You sure he was enticing the dog to catch the squirrel? Some dogs go potty for squirrels and a few are fast enough to catch them. He may have been mortified. Once they have their eye in it is v hard to stop them. Bit like trying to stop my cat killing rats/mice/birds Don't think there is a law protecting grey squirrels Would not condone deliberate hunting but that may not have been the case. Did you ask him? Sounds like this is a frequent occurrence ?
  6. wow - thank you so much
  7. Hi Just wondering if anyone knows of a local chess club for children 9yo or thereabouts? Nothing at school Many thanks
  8. Do hope they kept the fight the cuts poster there - just next to the keep left sign. Always made me smile
  9. Couple of points: These schools are highly selective which means that unless a child is exceptionally bright you have to pay for tutors to get them to the point hwere they can reach the entry criteria - a key barrier to entry which is rarely mentioned. Tutors cost. The selection criteria ensures they get the results but also drags down the average for surrounding schools - fuelling the panic around state schools. Relatively few people have 15K a year spare cash - remember that the average London salary is c?28K - even that hides a huge disparity - many people care just as passionately about their children's education but are priced out of this market. Tiny numbers get bursaries etc and see above re tutors. Fundamentally this is about buying your children a place at the front of life's queue Interesting to note that of state and private pupils with the same A level results - state children do better at uni
  10. Hi anyone have any info on local girls football clubs. My daughter is just starting out but seems to enjoy kicking a ball around. Is there anything not too serious/shouty where she coudl learn with other girlies? Would be great to have another opportunity to get her invovled with sport. cheers
  11. Hi Anyone know why buses going past north dulwich rather than past east dulwich. On a 176 going up red post hill!
  12. @senior chevalier - many thanks for links - We've actually bought the rails from the cable railing link - but I have really fallen for the design in the ones on Barry road for the newel tops - I suspect you are right and they are bespoke. Lovely though.
  13. Got my act together and here is a picture have looked at southwark and can't find a name there - may just drop a note in their doors!
  14. I just love East dulwich - even with James Barber - great parks, nice mix of real shops and good pubs. Some bits can get a bit up themselves but good to have the real life balance brought by Iceland, Farmers. Just miss Nisha from Val's - the nicest shopkeeper ever.
  15. Forgive slightly bizarre request but I want to try and contact the developers. I really want to find out the suppliers of their stainless steel/wood fences at the front! Any info gratefully received. I want to find flat steel newel post caps and they have them - have been searching the web but no joy so far Any help much appreciated. cheers
  16. @cyclemonkey - a CPZ is not the answer (and Please James B don't get ideas into your head!)- this was not fair play parking which has now been sorted out. We don't use our car for local journeys except when carrying shopping or where there are no bus routes (eg to West Dulwich or Crystal Palace). As for cyclists - bit like car drivers - there are good and bad. Just they are more vulnerable and need to make themselves as visible as possible at night.
  17. Someone has parked their motorbike next to the dodgy one (yay - think it's my neighbours so clearly community action at work!) - just hope he can't squeeze the van in between that and the next car along. V helpful stuff dulwich deviant - forgot about that. @spangly - so if I want to sit down I need to clamber over you??
  18. @pk - will phone if it doesn't move soon - will probably get a mouthful so putting that off @james barber CPZ over my dead body, but good point re tax - the motorbike isn't taxed as far as I can see @ratty - yes, I'd hope to park there from time to time and other people coming and going - that's the point - he's permanently booking a slot @peterstorm - I suspect he puts it in the back of the van - neat eh? meanwhile anyone got a spare motorbike they could lend me for a while? I know a very nice parking spot... @salsa - I am very tempted to move it but not that strong!!! I just need to vent really (and get a life) have to do big shop tomorrow and dread it even though I have one of those trolley things. Clearly in need of a glass of wine :)-D
  19. We live up by the Library on LL - parking is a nightmare but that's london and we have to deal with it. Except one of these lovely vans has just moved in for the past few weeks - it rarely moves but, get this, when it does the driver puts a battered old motorbike in the space to save it for when the van gets back. So bang goes the nearest parking place to my home for ever? Charming eh? It's just not playing fair to my mind - and no doubt the driver lives nowhere near. I just hate it - it's a bit like the people who deliberately sit on the aisle seats of buses when both seats are free.
  20. Nor us - completley full bin now
  21. Our blue bin not been emptied this or last week - think it is 3 weeks now - it's completley full. Is this some sort of Eric Pickles plot afoot?
  22. I know we are so, so sad - she is just the loveliest woman - so friendly and helpful. She always gave my daughter a bit of fruit whenever we went in and remembered her name. Do you know when she is actually going - we want to give her a card or something?
  23. Does anyone actually know how often the hall was used? From what I understand it was only used in the evenings and not all of them at that with some Sat/Sun day time classes. It's clearly a big space with high associated running costs so it ought to be used as much as possible. Some halls do seem to have a multiple use arrangement - nursery during day then classes in the evening and over the weekends. The challenge will be getting the finances to work including someone to organise the bookings/clean etc. From what I saw the last time I was in there it was very much in need of a wash and brush up. FG's position seems entirely reasonable - time for us all to get our thinking caps on and come up with some ideas instead of criticism.
  24. Use green bin for black/brown plant pots? not sure what the different is between those and a tray used for veg in supermarket
  25. here's hoping - we have hundreds. Anyone know? Have checked southwark site but it's not clear cheers M
