  1. Just to second firstmate advice. Teach children to stand like a tree. Some good advice about this he and dog training generally http://www.clickertraining.com/node/3535 Stand like a tree is a fairly big campaign in US and over here. Good advice plus teach children never to tease a dog.
  2. About to start this process. Many thanks for posting Renata. Any idea on where I might find info on last distance offered for 2013 entry. Do know this varies
  3. DaveR I was not equating dogs to children. I was equating the debate about irresponsible dog owners (who are people) to other debates such as those about cyclists and teenagers where the actions of a tiny minority are used to demonise whole groups completely unfairly. As far as I know there has yet to be a dog capable of picking up its own poo or reading notices. (Mind you, given the number of variations of poo breeds these days I forsee a pickupapoo being invented soon.) I have no objection to dog free zones provided they are reasonable - there is one already in Dulwich Park and in Peckham Rye. I've never seen a dog in either. My concern is that the survey feels like it's heading in the direction of making the whole park dog free.
  4. Couple of points: this survey is appallingly biased and Southwark clearly have an agenda. We need to see the actual data on incidents including a breakdown of what these are. Mako refers to seeing incidents every day. I also go to the park every day and have not seen an incident for ages and so a breakdown is important to give us all evidence about what the key issues are. Personally I am not convinced that the most serious incidents occur in the park but at home and probably with dogs who are under exercised, not trained or socialised. Were the discussion about cyclists or teenagers we wouldn't be talking about bans or restrictions for all just to deal with the anti social behaviour of a few. Far better to focus on prevention of incidents eg through free community dog training classes. There are plenty of responsible dog owners who would be happy to help. I also think restrictions should be time sensitive. I don't let my dog off the lead anywhere in the park on a busy Sunday pm but at 7am on a winters morning it's a different case Muzzling all dogs when out is just ott. Dogs use their mouths to play with other dogs and that builds their bite inhibition with other dogs and humans. That's part of their essential socialisation which would be prevented by muzzling. If there is an issue lets have an informed debate.
  5. op do you know exactly where this happened? The island on ll at this junction does make it safer to cross the main road but I always worry about people crossing the top of upland road as you can't see well as a pedestrian and cars turn in fast. My friends ten yo daughter has started to use this crossing so info on exactly what happened will help
  6. That's a shame. Useful to have a smugs reasonably close. What's the alternative for stationery?
  7. Check the exact postcode. We can't get infinity yet and are in ll. you can check using bts website I believe. You may also have to wait for installation. Might want to check that out.
  8. Expect to see more of this as housing benefit cuts start to bite
  9. Lots of small changes inc removal of some parking on l lane, east duleich road. Worth taking a look at detail. Can't be sure what proposal is for outside st Thomas more church. Will check.
  10. Any ideas when the consultation will start and what it will mean for llane? Can't see how they can fit it in without removing all the parking. Oh joy.
  11. So pleased to see that this incredibly serious debate has been taken over by nitpicking and car drivers. As someone who has been raped and didn't report it because I knew the status quo would never have provided any justice I am absolutely clear about what is meant and the scale of the challenge. I fear for my daughter as things seem to have got worse rather than better. With one in three girls experiencing unwanted sexual touching at school, does that give you a sense of the status quo for young girls and women in this country, let alone other places? Wish I'd known - would have been dancing
  12. Lots of trains cancelled ESP via Wimbledon or tulse hill and clap ham junction. Check live running info before you leave
  13. Eynella road, woodwarde road and court lane very icy. Not gritted. Would imagine hell to drive on. School pick up will be awful. L lane is fine. Buses still moving.
  14. Do hope that cyclist is OK. Be safe be seen is especially important. Drove past a cyclist this eve with NO LIGHTS on his bike. He was virtually invisible. Though as an ex cyclist I keep a very good eye out. It may not be cool but lots of lights and reflectors do help keep you safe.
  15. No. Farmers is still here. And hopefully thriving.
  16. You might want to think about whether your Dad was the target here. There is a major issue around crime directed towards disabled people. I would mention this to the police. Vandalism like this seems unusual.
  17. 176 is glorious, well done
  18. Do hope the lovely guy in the right hand prefab is ok. His garden is just stunning and something that brings a smile to so many people who walk or travel down ll on the bus.
  19. Interesting that people Seem to think that reducing accidents is a bad thing. Hmmm Lower speeds do mean less serious injuries. No one can argue with that. If they do reduce the speed limit then it does need to be enforced properly. I can't see them doing it on the main roads but there is a strong case for better enforcement of the current limits there eg with cameras at hot spots. There is a real problem up at the top end of lordship lane where it meets court lane. Cars can cope and the effect on the environment is debatable. Drivers could also be made aware that driving more smoothly speed wise ie smoother increases or decreases in speed really reduces fuel consumption. Btw I drive so am not anti car just anti plonker drivers
  20. Tough choice but couple of thoughts: You'll never get those days back with your daughter Meeting others when you work full time can be harder London is not such a bad place to bring up kids
  21. Go with your instincts. And beware of placing too much emphasis on results. I have been horrified recently to discover that most (yes, most) of the kids in my DD's class have tutors in an attempt to get them into Private/grammar schools. No wonder the school's results look good!
  22. Spaghetti house on a side st near John Lewis. Kid friendly and good food.
  23. Absolutely and huge thanks to you for all your work over the years on the Olympics. Would be nice to see you get the credit you deserve
