  1. Pat is a star, I see no evidence of racism, nor any reason to dismiss him as a wally. He is certainly earnest and fairly well informed. I have seen no evidence of a connection to the EDL if anyone has any then it would certainly help develop a debate here. When commonalities are suggested between his ideas and the EDL I have to say that in the 1990's I wrote a dissertation at Uni, which was rather well received (smug mode on), that claimed that the "New Social Movements" of the left were being mirrored by the right and far-right by moving their ideational grounding into the sphere of culture. Not a claim that should surprise anyone nowadays but it does suggest commonalities of thought across the more "fluffy" movements and the harsher groups and that such links shouldn't be taken as evidence of direct and simple relationships. Coming from a mixed English / Bangaldeshi family that have been in this country since the 1930's I have witnessed many things that shocked me about the muslim community. When I was 16 a female Pakistani friend went home for a holiday, she was married off whilst out there. I heard from her female friends some months later what had happened; now in my mid 40's it was a couple of years ago that I heard that she had finally made it home after escaping hubby. Not I guess an unfamiliar story but one I bet PAPHIO has heard to. And you British people did nothing, nothing at all to protect her- you were just too damn respectful of err 'traditions' Pat Condell, seems to me to be really angry about us taking serious people with nutso beliefs- criticisms he levels against Jawehs adherents of all persuasions. Let me state that more clearly, "Its the god-fascists in all our communities he don't like" whether they wear Hugo Boss, Catholic purple or sit around in caves fetishising Mohammed by cleaning their teeth with cloves. Its the nutters who threaten to hurt people and the terrible British apathy that allows them to thrive here that bugs him. Given the three option I have to say that Pat Condell is offended by the hypocrisy he sees around him. Best wishes everyone Brummie:)
  2. Folks, my partner and I are regular campers and have found a solution for Mozzies that works for us. I am regularly eaten alive by these pests, in India I once counted 68bites on my right foot below the ankle alone (which explains why I spent that holiday sweating, shaking and farting) BUT buy a Hurricane Lamp and fill it with Citronella Oil light it up and you will have an insect free life:)) There is a smashing garden centre in Forest Hill next to Maplins that sells Hurricane lamps and Citronella oil. I do not know the name of the garden centre sorry. The lamps are dirt cheap and the oil inexpensive. Keep the lamp light low as it can produce smoke- if it does you have it on too high. And dont overfill the lamp oil-well as they tend to leak the extra. As well as being great bug repellents I like the natural light a hurricane lamp provides, plus if you a peeing in your garden to annoy foxes (see earlier in the forum lol) or are just adding nitrogen to your soil these lamps are portable and safe. We use them all of the time when camping. I hope this helps:)
  3. It does add one thing to our lovely area- traffic. Coach after Coach lining the area, parents double parking to tip their kids into the streets. Why dont they dig up some of that green land they have and put the buses and coaches there and let us locals move around the area without being inconvenienced.
  4. Does anyone know the reason why the bus stop has been moved beyond the traffic lights by Denmark Hill Station? Just for clarity I mean on the side of the road coming from the Lordship Lane towards Denmark Hill. Moving the bus stop beyond the traffic lights means that the shortest route to the station is to run through the traffic. This has meant that people in a rush are just throwing themselves into the road traffic. I was startled to find my car surrounded by pedestrians recently whilst waiting at the lights something that has never happened to me before there. Of course if we had a decent transport system in London blah blah blah etc Move the Bus Stop back to where it was!
  5. oh jeez, learn to cook ffs, and then you dont need M+S. Go to SMBS, Go to the fantastic Cheese Block! The little Greek Deli next to Chener Books, maybe the EDD (East Dulwich Deli) or the market in North Cross Road but please support the local folk here. I have to say I support Iceland too, not everyone in East Dulwich can pay premium prices for grub we are not that sort of social mix around here. Now if M+S took over one of the wretched estate agents that infests Lordship Land then I wouldn't object:)
  6. I have some sad news regarding Peter, of 17 Shawbury Road. This morning the Police attempted to gain access to his property after a friend had contacted them saying they were unable to rouse him via mobile or internet. As his next-door-neighbour I was able to provide access to his back garden and asked the Police to keep me informed which they did. Apparently, Peter had fallen whilst out walking in the street last week and had passed away. I have no further information. Peter would be familiar to many in East Dulwich. In his late 60?s or early 70?s he was a tall, 6ft 3? well-built man whose square shoulders rounded just a little from his later career perched in front of a monitor as he preceded many of us making a career programming in C. He had swept back hair, a moderately closely clipped beard, moustache and sideburns combo in the classic ?salt and pepper? and wore fuller, by today tastes, black-rimmed glasses. When ever he left his house to go out walking he invariably had headphones on. I met Pete when I first moved into my flat some 10years ago. He poked his head over the back-garden fence to say ?hello? whilst I was amid a ?Death to all Pyracantha? rant with my bloodied mitts and scratched face. He stood there silently looking at me before coming to the conclusion ?I take it then that you do not like this plant? in his deep and cultured voice. From then on we stopped to chat in the street whenever we met and occasionally went for a few drinks together which culminated in our spending a Boxing Day together getting ridiculously drunk. He won his Philosophy degree back in the 1950?s and it was this period that formed his love of Jazz. I must say that I am all RnR and Punk, he totally Jazz and this formed much of our drink addled rambling conversations. Well that and literature as we were both very well read but with tastes formed by very different generations. How we stumbled upon Plato and then two philosophy lecturers in one boozy session at the Clockhouse I will never know but those two fellers endured us two asking, I am sure, the daftest questions. He was good company and I enjoyed it. Peter once told me that he had been married but they had had no children. I sensed that when he talked of his marriage he blamed himself for its failure and still felt some sense of regret. I had no idea that he had no next-of-kin. The Police told me that because there was no-one to be an advocate for Peter his body cannot be released by the local Coroner until some legal determination can be made. I have spoken with some of the folks in Shawbury Road and they want to be represented at his funeral, make contributions to flowers and put up cards for him outside his flat. You are welcome to do so to. I have no idea how I go about finding out the details of his burial, or his court case, so I would welcome any advice in tracking him down- maybe I will call into the Co-op Funeral service on Lordship Lane and ask for their advice. RIP Peter, a good man, a good neighbour, and a gentleman I enjoyed spending time with.
  7. Hello folks, As an East Dulwich resident I have often suffered the weekend knock, occasionally whilst I am having a lie-in on Saturday mornings, from the more evangelical churches in our area. I am an atheist, I find Yahweh revolting, I find religion ridiculous and coming from a mixed muslim and christian background, often cruel, discriminatory and self-serving. Over 30years I have argued with the door knockers, invited them in for a row, slammed the door and sworn at them to deter them from ever knocking my door again and disturbing me just to justify their religion to themselves through me. However, as I was about to leave the house this Saturday morning past two charming, handsome black women banged on my door I opened i and laughed at them as their purpose was obvious, they laughed too. I explained I was an atheist as is my wife, and could we in some way register our out of evangelical pester power AND THEY SAID YES WE COULD!!! Apparently if you ask the door knockers to refrain from banging on your door again they will register your objection at their church and will not disturb you again! This is the sort of service I want from my local church! And all I have ever asked for really. I wonder whether we can create a list that the local churches can distribute amongst their selves cheaply that means that those of us uninterested in 'faith' thingummy stuff can be left undisturbed in house when they go out evangelicising. What do you think?
  8. Its lovely to see the young chaps of East Dulwich getting their funky stuff together:) Rhyming chants and formation dancing is all very well but I must say pointing is still rude and all that smoking is making me cough!
  9. On the Curry Debate, I will lay out my credentials, I am Brummie- the home of the Balti, I am of Bangladeshi background and at the age of 45yrs old I have eaten curry for about 43years:) Tandoori Nights is ok, but the SWADESH kicks butt! Trust me I know a gem when I find one:))
