Hi Sue. I am merely the messenger. I saw there was clearing out going on a couple of days ago so popped in and had a chat with the new guys. The back room is not changing and neither from what I could see is the general interior character of the place. They've already put in some good looking wooden pew type seats in the back bar area. They're the same crew who run The Joiners in Camberwell, which features live music regularly, and they'll be putting on plenty of music at The Ivy House too (how could you not?!), though because of noise issues nothing overly amplified apparently. Anyway, they said they knew about The Nunhead Forum, so I mentioned this Forum too - hopefully they'll post some more details themselves some time soon. Something of possible interest to those who remember the pub in its early/mid seventies "Dr Feelgood, Ian Dury, etc" days, when it was called The Newlands Tavern (and I think should be so again) - I had the pleasure of meeting the Fentimans recently who were the couple who ran the pub then. Great to hear their account of that time from the horse's mouth (horses' mouths?) and to learn how they made such a success of the place.

My son is starting at Harris in September and has been playing for Athenlay FC for a few years so the drums have been beating from a couple of directions!
  3. Thanks everyone who took the time to answer a few questions. The Ivy House is re-opening in a couple of weeks. More details as and when!

In 2003 it was "sound and improving". In 2001 it was "designated as having serious weaknesses". Before then I don't know!

It is with a certain degree of trepidation that I am joining this debate, however I feel I need to defend the original poster referred to by Debi. I know her and she joined the discussion on the forum with no other motive other than to share her current experience on the hot subject of secondary schools. The accusations were not unfounded. They were brought up at a Harris Parents forum meeting - she was merely reporting what was said. I think any truck with the "accusations" should perhaps be solely directed at the school or the "resident police officer".
  7. Fiona Foster runs some very friendly and down-to-earth classes at Ivydale School on Fridays which our five-year-old enjoys very much and at a venue in Gowlett Road the rest of the week...fionafoster-dance.co.uk
  8. Our boy's winded up at Harris East Dulwich and we're all very happy with that. It wasn't in our consideration initially (Kingsdale number one on the list!), but after walking around the school, hearing positive testimonials and discovering mainly good things from our own research, we changed our minds, this despite a couple of friends tutting, "ooo, they have early starts you know", "ooo, they sing a school song you know"!
  9. Found a good little pub called the Heart and Hand last time I was down there last year, at the top of the north Lanes if memory serves me well. It had a fantastic jukebox choker with all sorts of weird and wonderful 45's
  10. The Southwark History Library near Borough tube has post office directories dating back to the 1880's (further back on microfilm). Streets are listed by region and in alphabetical order and alongside the house numbers is the name of the person living there at the time, or if it was a commercial premises, the name of the business (eg bakers) and the name of the "proprietor"

  12. Bit of a long shot this. A friend dropped his iphone on Peckham Rye Common this afternoon, around 3.15/3.30, probably on the stretch between the Cafe on the Rye and the big tree with the circular bench. Despite an hour of searching only five minutes after he realised he'd lost it, we couldn't find it. So on the very off chance that anyone knows of anyone who may have found an iphone on the common, please contact me. Thanks!

Hello all. As far as I'm aware Ivydale hasn't been special measures. In 2010 and 2008 it was a "satisfactory school". In 2003 (before the arrival of "new" head teacher Ray O'Neill) it was "sound and improving". In 2001 it was "designated as having serious weaknesses"...perhaps the latter was an equivalent of special measures ten years ago, I don't know! Ray O'Neill arrived, I'm pretty sure, in 2005. He was a fantastic head teacher. The school has felt like it's been moving in the right direction for a number of years and I guess all were disappointed that this didn't seem to be reflected in the ofsted report.
  14. I've checked out the "new" Ivy House a couple of times since its re-opening. Two excellent nights of music. One a dynamic one-man-blues-band called Dollar Bill (free on a Sunday), and another, last Friday, the Egyptian Bop (four quid), featuring a couple of indie/garage type bands, a big-sounding duo from France via East London called Helium and Eggs and an all-girl trio from Japan via Hackney called No Cars. Very friendly new management too. With good publicity (a la the "Pull the other one" comedy night) and continuing good music, the opportunity really is there for the Ivy House to revisit past live music glories. Oh, anyone know if Hugh Metcalfe's monthly Klinker evening survived the cut...or had he already curtailed his trips south of the river prior to new management?
