Yeah, back-to-back Fall all evening at The Ivy House tonight!

The Ivy House may be having a Mark E Smith/Fall night next week if an evening can be found. Not enough time to sort for this evening, but I have compiled a Fall playlist for them to play in the back (main) room tonight - will post again very soon to hopefully confirm it'll be on!

Many thanks for the supportive posts - it really is much appreciated! The hours applied for regarding supply of alcohol are 11.00 to 11.00 (Monday to Thursday), 11 to midnight (Friday), 11 to 1am (Saturday) and 11 to 10.30 (Sunday). The most recent soundproofing problems with the Ivy House were in 2010 when the then management did not apparently manage the issue of people being in the outside areas front and back very well late at night and on some occasions into the early hours. They had reinforced the soundproofing, but this effort was negated by not keeping an eye on other sound sources. The most recent licensees, as honeybee79 stated, had no complaints from local residents re noise. This was due in part to the recent soundproofing, but also to the excellent late hours management of outside drinking/smoking that Nick and his team put in place. Incidentally the current soundproofing, recently removed to enable asbestos removal work at the back of the stage, is to be re-installed double-fold. Extra soundproofing options for the roof are also being explored. The 1am Saturday license would not necessarily be invoked every Saturday, only when an event warrants it.

The local residential population DO go there (when it was last open obviously) - that is why there was a huge outcry when the pub closed down. Granted in the past it had a reputation as somewhere many locals didn't go to - I spoke to one bloke who lived around the corner for 25 years and the only time he went inside the place was at Stuart Road's Silver Jubilee street party when he was 5. It rained and he went in the pub. The other memory he had was an armed siege in the 90s. But that has changed. Nearly 300 people, many in this apparently "sparsely populated" area have invested in the pub, because they believe in its resurrection as a centre of a vibrant local community (and a fabulous venue for those further afield). Some of those people remember the place from the 40s, 50s and 60s and are thrilled to see what is happening. In reference to the point about there being other community spaces in spitting distance, by way of an example of what's going on, a couple of long-standing residents have told me of their disappointment that they are no longer able to meet where they used to (am not sure which community space this is) and are looking forward to the prospect of reminiscence groups at the pub. And that will be one of many things going on during the day - mark my words! (please) I promised myself not to fire off a response here and will probably regret it, but I never get the location thing. I never moan about the Gowlett being in the wrong place, yet will happily walk to there and plenty of other places in East Dulwich/Peckham (I live near the Ivy House you may have guessed!). To say the pub has problems with its geographical location is to ignore the many people that live around here. It also rather implies that the world stops at Peckham Rye Common. And relax.

My son is year 7 at Harris Boys East Dulwich. They are not allowed mobile phones as long as they are in school uniform, ie not just when at the school, but also travelling to and from the school. As a result, apparently, it is "known" that Harris Boys do not carry mobile phones and are subsequently not a target. Although I was a little edgy at first, my son being uncontactable on his school commute hasn't been an issue.

Cheers Jah. Reg and Sue had very fond memories of their time at The Newlands. A few other acts they mentioned...Gonzalez, Kokomo, Rory Gallagher, Bob Kerr's Whoopee Band, Ducks Deluxe and Ace. There was a queue down the street when the latter played there in 1974 because they'd had a hit single after the time they were booked. They had memories of nearly booking Dire Straits just before leaving the pub in 1976 - looking at the dates I reckon it's more likely they nearly booked the Knoplers' pre Straits band Cafe Racers. By the way, I did ask them about those Stones and Pink Floyd myths...obviously a few years before their time (I don't think anyone thought that Pink Floyd played in Nunhead during their Dark Side of the Moon tour!), but whilst they were there, they'd never heard anything about either of them playing...still, who can prove that Syd Barrett never popped down there at least once whilst at Camberwell Art College and strummed a few chords!

Joe Strummer and Mick Jones ended up on stage together at the end of a Strummer and Mescaleros fire-fighters benefit show, performing some Clash songs, the month before Joe died. It went pretty well apparently and I remember reading something about them plotting to turn up at a gig together, "undercover" as a Clash tribute band...I reckon had Strummer lived The Clash would have played again - maybe it'd only have been a "worthy" one-off, but I think they'd have done something.

I'd like to throw a 28th into the mix - The Fall's Your Future Our Clutter. Surely the best 28th album ever released. (should this be under a separate "Best 28th album thread"?)

I'd like also like to add positive feedback about Harris Boys East Dulwich, but as a parent of one of the aforementioned primary school friends of Denmothersmith's son who does find the organisational aspects a considerable challenge! My son was notorious at his primary school for leaving things and losing things at school and hearing about a strict regime at Harris we feared that he might get into regular trouble for something he finds genuinely hard to do. He has however (mostly) risen to the challenge, albeit with the assistance of some teamwork at home in terms of preparing for the day...though that help is becoming less necessary! He also happens to be a serial delayer/disliker of homework, and hearing homework was done every night, we feared this also might be an issue, but again he is adapting and it is becoming a comfortable norm (though the homework has admittedly yet to reach an over-challenging stage). Additionally, the option does seem to be there to do some of it in school time (ie not the post-school homework club). This week he twice started homework UNPROMPTED on his return home - unheard of whilst at primary! The boys all have a planner/diary which has been a great asset (possibly this happens at a lot of secondary schools?). I've just asked him and one of his friends who's here now whether they like the school. Both gave an unhesitant "yes". Reasons they gave, in enthusiastic agreement, were the equipment, the facilities, the lessons being interesting and fun...my son said he's learnt loads, which for someone who finds being distracted as easy as falling off a log is a big deal!
