Would really recommend Söderberg East Dulwich which opened recently been twice - once for fantastic cinnamon buns and tonight for pizzas which were really good and 2 for 1 on Tuesdays from 5pm. Lovely general manager and staff.

DaveR I find it very offensive that you should label a widely held concern about the need for further research and the fact the Council of Europe has called for 3G/4G masts to be banned within the vicinity of schools and densely populated residential areas because of concerns about the potential effects of radiation and electromagnetic fields "scientific illiteracy and/or deceptive scaremongering tactics"
-
Penguin68 The reports you highlight mostly cover mobile phone usage rather than masks so I don't know how relevant James would find them. The recent report you highlight concludes by recommending further studies to look at the behavioural/neurological outcomes of mobile phone usage on children, as well as to examine other areas like its potential impact upon sleep and brain function among other things. The two older reports from 2012 do not cover 4G technology but 3G and state: "Scientists found no convincing proof that radio waves from mobile phones cause brain tumours or any other type of cancer, but cautioned that they had too little information to assess the risk beyond 15 years of usage." "Some research reviewed by the group found that mobile phone radiation might cause subtle changes to low frequency brain waves that could be picked up by electroencephalograms (EEGs), but it was unclear whether the effects were consistent and had any health implications." "In making recommendations for future research, the report emphasised a need to focus on new and emerging devices that emit radiofrequency radiation, and to gather more data on cancer risk among those who have used phones for more than 15 years." The Cancer Research Uk site states: "Mobile phones are a relatively recent invention. So far, studies have indicated that using these phones for about 10 years is unlikely to cause cancer. But we cannot be completely sure about their long-term effects. And there have not been enough studies looking at how mobile phone use could affect the health of children." "Research is underway to fill both of these gaps in our knowledge. Until we get a conclusive answer, the Government recommends some precautions for people who have concerns." " And children under the age of 16 should only use mobile phones for essential calls."
-
Penguin68 "In fact, having a mast near schools is evidentially beneficial for children, whose phone will be emitting that much less radiation than if they are struggling to pick up a signal." I am not sure how many 2 to 4 year old children at Half Moon Montessori nursery opposite the site carry mobile phones or indeed how many 4 to 8 year olds at the Judith Kerr school next to the site have have mobile phones so I do not think this will be beneficial to these children' The proposed site in next to a school and opposite a nursery so I don't think it is unreasonable to use the precautionary principle and choose to site the mast elsewhere.

James thank you for your support. The 73 people who have lodged objections since this was bought to the local schools and communities attention on Monday are worried about a range of issues not just the health issues. These issues are: 1.There has not been adequate consultation with the local community, no information has been posted to local residents and have not seen any evidence of pre-planning consultation. As part of the Mobile Operators Association's 10 commitments, they are supposed to consult the community before the planning application is lodged and when the proposed mast is in or near a school, undertake extra public consultation and contact the school's governing body. 2. This is the type of transmitter appropriate for rural locations with low population densities not for heavily populated urban environments with a high density of young children. The local area has 8 schools within 1km including: Judith Kerr, Half Moon Montessori nursery, Dulwich Hamlets, Dulwich Infants, Japs, JAGs, Charter, Herne Hill School, and Alleyns. 3. This junction is in constant use by young children on bikes, scooters and on foot as they move to and from schools and nursery. The proposed cabinets at street level will restrict a very busy pavement area (which was widened for safety reasons) and is very unhelpful in a residential area that is committed to working towards improving safe routes to school. 4. This mast would tower over the local mature trees and the proposed cabinets will have a significant negative impact on the aesthetics of the local area.

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
Lordship replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thank you for your support and congratulations that your hard work on the new secondary school for East Dulwich has resulted in a new school. As you will see from objections so far, there has also not been the level of community consultion expected. "As part of the Mobile Operators Association's 10 commitments, they are supposed to consult the community before the planning application is lodged and when the proposed mast is in or near a school, undertake extra public consultation and contact the school's governing body. As a member of the local community I have not seen any evidence of this pre-planning consultation (including in the applicant's list of consultees in their application form). I therefore also object to this proposal as it does not appear follow the mobile operators' industries own guidelines." -

I know you will be aware that a planning application reference 15/AP/0371 for a a 25m mobile phone mast at the junction of Village Way and Half Moon Lane has been made to Southwark council. Although this is not within East Dulwich I know some of the people within your ward will have children attending the quickly expanding Judith Kerr school which is next to the proposed site and Half Moon Montessori nursery which is opposite. The local area has 8 schools within 1km including: Judith Kerr, Half Moon Montessori nursery, Dulwich Hamlets, Dulwich Infants, Japs, JAGs, Charter, Herne Hill School, and Alleyns. There are concerns about the health risks associated with 4G masts and the Council of Europe has called for 3G/4G masts to be banned within the vicinity of schools and densely populated residential areas because of concerns about the potential effects of radiation and electromagnetic fields. I would welcome your comments on this proposed mast so near local schools. -
Congratulations to the Charter on the new school this is great news for East Dulwich. I am right in thinking that both Charter schools would need to have the same admission policy as they belong to the same federation of schools? If the new school moved away from the distance based admissions policy would the orginal Charter school also need to change it's admissions policy?

What's happening at the Elm Lodge surgery?
Lordship replied to Sol's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I have always found Elm Lodge to be excellent. When my child had a bad accident recently on the way to school I walked her straight round to Elm Lodge who bandaged the wound immediately and told me to come back if the bleeding didn't stop, they also made an appointment for a review the next day. When I returned the same day my child saw both the nurse and doctor immediately, was assessed again and a referral made to A and E for further treatment. When my child really needed help and treatment it was immediate and given with real care and compassion. -
Thanks for the advice have posted there.

Unfortunately the body of a small cat has been found on the flower bed to the left of the bench outside JAPS on Village Way SE21. Someone has covered it with a white towel as the route is used by lots of children on their way to school but was able to note the bottom of the back legs were white. Posting in case someone is missing a much loved cat and would like to know what has happened. I will contact the council tomorrow to remove.

ANOTHER crash at the eastern end of Upland Road
Lordship replied to bheroniphr's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yes yet another crash on this stretch of Lordship Lane. I have raised this with James Barber see below Re: East Dulwich councillor - how can I help? Posted by Lordship September 17, 10:17AM Hi James You may have seen the posts relating to the accident on lordship lane at 10.15 pm on 16/09/12 this is the second high speed accident on this stretch of Lordship Lane. Cars regularly travel well above the speed limit on this section and there have been many near misses. There is a crossing island between Friern and Upland road, which is heavily used by the pupils of Goodrich School, and the Harris Academies to cross Lordship Lane and I have witnessed some very near misses as cars travel so fast there. I feel a sign that flashes slow down and shows the car's speed would really help slow traffic if positioned near Underhill or Overhill Road (on the left hand side of the lane when travelling towards East Dulwich). Also there is a lot of wreckage left from the cars on the side of the road and around the tree one of the cars hit and lots of petrol on the road and pavement as one of the cars petrol tank split during the accident, I will contact the council and ask if it could be cleaned up and would be grateful if you could do the same. I would also be very grateful if you have any insights into the council?s position on traffic calming for this section of Lordship Lane or how neighbours and myself should go about asking for some traffic calming measures. Thank you for your time. However I fear the accident stats for this part of Lordship Lane are incorrect as you can see from James's reply Re: East Dulwich councillor - how can I help? Posted by James Barber September 19, 08:42AM Hi Lordship, Looking at the last three years of crash data for this locaiton (www.crashmap.co.uk) 2009,2010 & 2011 shows 2 slight injuries over 2 crashes along the Lordship Lane around junctions with Friern and Upland Roads. We have a number of other locations in East Dulwich which have more crashes and with more severity. I personally think we should be deploying average speed cameras arond Southwark. Siemens is happy to provide them and fund requiring 3 speed awareness courses funded by speedsters per week. But it's complicated by the west side being in Village ward whose councillors have previously shown reluctance about controlling speedsters - hence the shared part of Melbourne Grove being one of the very few East Dulwich roads not 20mph. -------------------- Regards james.barber@southwark.gov.uk 07900 227366 Liberal Democrat Councillor for East Dulwich Ward [www.jamesbarber.org.uk] [twitter.com] It was good of James to reply but hope the council don't wait for another fatality until they decide to do something. -
Accident on lordship lane 10.15 pm 16/09/12
Lordship replied to Elephant's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi mynamehere Thank you for your information I do feel that a slow down sign is needed as there is a crossing island between Friern and Upland road, which is heavily used by the pupils of Goodrich School, and the Harris Academies to cross Lordship Lane and I have witnessed some very near misses as cars travel so fast there. I have just posted on James Barbers thread to ask him to look into this and how to go about asking the council for traffic calming measures on this section. I hope the lady whose car was hit last night and the plain clothed police officers involved are not badly hurt but I feel with two high speed crashes in recent months the next crash could have a tragic outcome. -

Accident on lordship lane 10.15 pm 16/09/12
Lordship replied to Elephant's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Live on Lordship Lane and heard the accident the police car must have been going very fast as the noise was deafening. Went to see if I could help but lots of people already helping (weirdly plain clothed policeman from the car was more interested in asking if I had heard the siren). Myself and my neighbours were all asked this but no one had heard sirens or seen a flashing blue lights. I hope the lady they hit is ok but the police really need to use their flashing lights at night as they normally turn off their sirens. As Elephant says this is the second crash on this part of Lordship Lane. Cars regularly drive at 40+ and it's only a matter of time until another crash happens. I am always very surprised how fast cars are traveling when I am reversing out of my driveway. A sign that flashes slow down and shows the car's speed would really help slow traffic if postioned near Overhill Road (on the left hand side of the lane when traveling towards East Dulwich). -
The family changing room floors would be a lot cleaner if parents were to use the shoe covers provided when changing their kids before and after their swimming lessons. When my kids attend only a few parents bother to do this and it would prevent kids tracking dirt into the pool-better for everyone. As the pool is well used by children, ensuring parents and teachers ask children to empty their bladders before swimming would be helpful. I thought everyone did this but maybe a few signs would help.

Both my girls started at The Dulwich Ballet School at 2 1/2 and still attend years later, they both love it and Miss Hodge and Miss Jo are brilliant with the very young. Sally-Ann Hodge @ Dulwich Ballet School 07958 753883 Mobile
