We had loads of problems with our bins, collections & fly-tipping since the new collection schedule began. I wrote to my local councillor and she put me in contact with a very helpful woman at Southwark Council who has changed our bins to more appropriate ones (we have several houses sharing their bins), and she also spoke to Veolia who are now monitoring our collections to make sure they're done correctly. We take our excess recycling to Sainsbury's when we do our shopping :)

I'm more of a foodie than an animal rights activist, but in this case I support Tom's campaign and was one of the people who asked Beauberry House to take foie gras off the menu. It is good to see that local restaurants take customer feedback seriously - everyone should have the right (and initiative!) to speak up for what they want & do not want to see on local menus. There are plenty of food choices - veggie & meat alike - without having to resort to force-feeding animals to make a "luxury" item.

jo77, pubs in ED are all very supportive of local events - I have a food tasting business and have held charity events at the Mag and Hoopers Bar, and have seen many more market-style events advertised! I'm sure if you ask around you'll have no trouble finding a venue. Upstairs at the EDT has always appealed to me, I just haven't got around to organising something there yet ;-) If you want to include the idea of DIY crafts, The Scarlet Peacock runs some great classes locally. I met the initiators of the People's Supermarket a couple of years ago at the Lambeth County Fair - this was back in the days when they were still gauging interest and looking for a suitable site. I gave my details for their "mailing list" but never heard anything further - so I was pleased to see the Channel 4 documentary which showed them up and running. Although the concept is not without it's difficulties (pricing issues, conflicts in what members want the supermarket to stock, etc), I do think there is a place for it. It provides an amazing opportunity for any member of the community to participate & see themselves making a direct impact - something which can be very difficult to find in a large city. I would definitely be interested in joining & volunteering if we were to open a People's Supermarket in the area.
