One heeled lady hobbling down Lordship Lane
Jennys replied to NorthernTrix's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Merrifields have done small jobs free for me before. Perhaps you caught him at a bad time. He recently sewed a strap back on a laptop bag for us and did a beautiful job. The nice man at timpsons told me at the time that timpsons doesn't do sewing. -
Some years ago a local councillor told me they had tried to persuade Alleyn's to provide parking on site for the coaches but the school refused to do this. I don't have any proof or details though and it was a long time ago.

I have tried to comment (favourably) on this proposal on the Southwark website (using the link which was provided here) but it keeps asking me to set up a new email account which I don't want to do. Has anyone else had this problem?

I don't know if there is "conclusive evidence" that street art attracts other graffiti but I know someone scribbled over the Stik picture (Adam and Eve I think) on a garage door in Beauval Road and also that the house on Lordship Lane, near the Heber Road junction, which is decorated with lots of street art, also had numerous tags and scribbles liberally added to it.
-
Why is it that East Dulwich gets all the so-called street art rather than Dulwich Village... is it because some (though not all) of the street art is hideous and all street art attracts other unwanted graffiti. If this scheme is run by the Dulwich Picture Gallery which is in Dulwich Village why don't they put some of the street art near the Picture Gallery itself and give the good people of Dulwich Village the dubious pleasure of such travesties as that Girl in a Window near East Dulwich Station.

Just seen this - are we at chain tipping point locally?

Is there a local plan for the area regarding the proportion of independent businesses as opposed to chains? -
TFL consultation about Elephant and Castle

Surely the more convenient and varied the local bus routes are, the more people will choose to use the bus for their journey instead of driving. Not everybody is fit enough or brave enough to cycle and a bus has got to be the next best thing, environmentally. And yes, buses are sometimes fairly empty for the early part of the route, especially out of the rush hour, but they always seem to be very full by the time they have gone a short way along the route. -
Canary, would you be so very rude and unpleasant to somebody if you met them face to face? I certainly hope not. Why are you being so very nasty here? I hope you will apologise to Buddug and that the Administrator will prevent you from posting here in the future. Whatever the rights and wrongs may be of parking in the area reserved for parents with children you have, with your meanness certainly put yourself in the wrong. Incidentally, Buddug is a girl's name so I suspect Buddug is a woman and not a man, as you assume. You have every right to disagree with Buddug but you have absolutely no right to speak to her/him or indeed anyone, in this way.

As well as the bus stop right outside and East Dulwich Station a short walk away there are other bus routes passing very near the proposed cinema - the 37, 484 and also the 12 and 197 at the Lordship Lane/Barry Road junction. In the past when the St Thomas More Hall was a local community venue I never noticed associated traffic or parking problems in the area. Why should there be any when it again - hopefully - becomes a venue for the local community instead of being left empty and abandoned or maybe turned into expensive flats (which would in themselves be likely to cause parking problems).

And where do visitors, tradespeople, delivery vans etc park once the whole road has dropped curbs and there are no 'normal' sections of road left? Where does the rainwater go, once your front garden has been concreted over? Why should neighbours look out of their front window onto a car instead of a proper front garden?
-
I too was very impressed with the exhibition and feel this cinema would be a wonderful addition to Lordship Lane.

The traffic was pretty diabolical both way in LL at about 9.15 am today.

Like your wife, illybilly, I always check my receipts before leaving Sainsburys. There are often mistakes (sometimes mine if I have picked up the wrong items which make up a special offer, sometimes the checkout person's mistake). This way I have often saved several pounds - but even if it is only a small amount of money I always go to customer services, who refund me cheerfully.

I have lived here for 25 years. This thread certainly brings back the names of shops I had forgotten. Does anyone know what the unoccupied shop next to William Rose Butchers used to be? I seem to remember it was empty even in the days of the pine shop. The excellent electrical shop, Edwards, once near the corner which is now home to Cafe Nero moved to Penge, by Homebase, I think.

Sports-ground proposal, Burrow Road / Greendale
Jennys replied to Alex K's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I have a vague memory that years ago (over 20 years) King's swapped this freehold with Sainsbury's so King's got the Griffin sports ground in Dulwich village which had been Sainsbury's staff sports ground and Sainsbury's got the land at Dog kennel Hill to build the supermarket. But I may well have misremembered this, someone else might know if I am right. -
Spate of burglaries in East Dulwich
Jennys replied to EastDulwichRose's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I have just noticed that our water butt has been knocked over. I am sure it would have been much too heavy to have been knocked down by a cat or fox and can only assume a potential burglar climbed on it to try and get into the house. -
I am a so-called baby boomer. I worked and paid PAYE taxes and National Insurance etc ever since I left school many years ago. My salary was very modest. I obtained my qualifications including an Open University Degree and various diplomas by studying in the evenings. I did not get a grant (except for a one-off sum, I seem to remember, of about ?100 to attend an OU summer school). I am now retired and have a very small occupational pension and a state pension. Because we bought our house many years ago it is now worth much more than we paid for it but as we are still living in it I fail to see how we have benefitted from the increase in property prices. As a parent I am indeed worried how younger people will be able to get onto the property ladder, if they wish to do so. I also fail to see, Masterblaster, how taking away my Freedom Pass will help to keep public libraries open.
-
According to a letter in The Guardian earlier this year "A rough calculation reveals that the tax allegedly avoided by Philip Green could, if divided equally between the 481 threatened libraries, provide them with about ?625,000 each. How about it, Sir Philip? Look what philanthropy did for Bill Gates's image?" (Ref below - the farting bit is another story entirely!) http://www.guardian.co.uk/theguardian/2011/feb/10/multiculturalism-libraries-farting-tories Sorry Masterblaster you are attacking the wrong people.

55 - 65 year olds - where do they go?
Jennys replied to GrumpyGranny's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Not local I know, but Gresham College lectures are easy enough to get to (especially with a freedom pass. The lectures are entertaining, cover a range of topics and are free of charge. http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events -
Not actually seen in Sainsbury's but local all the same http://www.greatbritishlife.co.uk/article/interview-with-jo-brand-brand-awareness-36708/
