  1. Does anyone know what is happening to the old "Design 6" shop on Upland Road, last rumour I heard was an estate agents... hopefully not is all I can say. Also does anyone know what happened to "design 6" itself, are they still trading somewhere ?
  2. If I may add what was actually played at my Fathers funeral a few years ago, we managed to get the crem people to allow us a good old fashioned Jazz Funeral, with a Humanist service (much less depressing I have to say then some priest / rabbi / stranger spouting off about the person he/she/it didn't know) I was lucky (??) enough to speak for the the last 10 minuts of the service and we got them to pump the Jazz funeral music from the Bond film "Dr No" over the pa system whilst I pressed the button to lower the coffin. It was interesting to see peoples reactions as his coffin vanished from view just as the slow bit finished and the fast bit of muisc started. He actually requested that piece of music many years ago and I have to say, I would too as it was quite a magical moment and lifted a lot of peoples spirits ... (I promise you we didn't toast him until after he was toasted himself) Got to say - it was one of the more lively funerals I have been to, jazz playing in the background and everyone randomly standing up and telling good stories about him (it was one of the things we asked people to do and it worked well)
  3. The Peckham Town Centre Management Group (PTCMG) received a letter yesterday from Richard Thomas (the Executive Member for regeneration in the council) asking for support of the Crossriver tram and East London line extension Being cheeky, I am going to ask members of the East Dulwich Forum to also add their support to getting better transport links into the borough. I have loaded a copy of the letter onto the PTCMG Website and urge you to review it and add your weight to the campaign Many thanks in advance.
  4. Along this vein but in a slightly different area A friend of mine has just cancelled her holiday as her new born's passport application is stuck in the glaswegian sorting office who are on an unofficial strike until the 8th Be warned if you have sent off for a passport over the past 2 week... it may not be back for a while

  6. Hi Louisa (and all) The council now has the cleaning contract for the area in front of the station and are making a better job of it then the previous cleaning company (at a lower price from what I understand) In terms of price, the forecourt area is owned by Spacia and as such the council wasn't obliged to clean it but as they have cleaning crews already operating in the area they put a bid in for the work and won it. The idea of a coffees shop / newsagents is a good one, and Network Rail / Spacia are looking into redeveloping unit 11a (to the old junk shop to the right of the station as you enter it) for commercial letting. The PTCMG have been in discussion with Network rail to ensure that it is used for the good of the commuters coming through the station and have asked if it could be used for a coffee shop in the future. I guess, if there is someone out here who has the money to invest in a coffee shop / newsagents at this location then contact either the PTCMG or Spacia and Rail Track directly and make enquiries about it's availability. As for the station, I think that Network Rail are putting money into the station at the moment, even looking at stopping the rain impregnation of the stairwells and making the flooring non slip... as always changes will take time but hopefully will start to make a difference in the near future. I guess with 15,000 peak hour commuters through the station every day, surely it makes sense to have facilities that they want there.
  7. Simple fact of life is that people feel safer when there is a conductor on the bus, rather then just some poor person sitting behind a security screen more focused on todays busy roads. Equally (when we had them) the conductors used to help people on and off the bus, ensure that it pulled away when it was safe and also made sure that it was tidy during the route (picking up papers and stuff) Yeah, it's an argument for conductors to come back and why not - Shoot let's hang the expense - it's better to pay a little more to use the bus and feel safe then not use it out of fear. I even have heard that they will introduce a form of conductor for the tram when it is running.
  8. Don't know if anyone has mentioned it, however the work currently being done on the station is to re-open the windows to the old billiard room that sits on the top floor of the station. According to the council, it will be the first stage in renovating the billiard room into a more usable space and hopefully the windows project will attract private investment to open the space up fully. Peckham Rye station is a lovely old station that needs a lot of care and attention to make it as grand as it was when first built, and hopefully the council having made a good start this time and will be able to maintain the pace over the next few years (they are also managing to keep the forecourt a bit cleaner but alas as Peckham Rye station is a high risk station from terrorist and other attacks we can't have bins anywhere in the station as a result) for more information on Peckham town centre, including a live departure board for the station, visit www.ptcmg.co.uk
  9. Bring back the Routemaster is what I say None of these problems on the old buses when you had a conductor and seperate driver (all the Drivers had to do was worry about the traffic and other drivers without the hassle of the passegers as well) Maybe someone should redesign a modern version of the routemaster with DDI issues solved (oh hang on they tried that and called it a Bendy Bus) :))
  10. Wow Is it true - Do bus drivers really dream of Cannes ??? (assumption based on knowing the drinking habits of the creative industry)
  11. Just joined the forum, despite living in ED for 13 years, and qualified to comment on this post as I represent the traders in Peckham as part of the town centre management group (yes Peckham is attempting to improve and manage itself) Station : The concept of opening up the forecourt to the station is one that is supported by a lot of different people, but has difficulties in terms of the lease left on the shops (they signed a 100 Year lease back in 1930 when the shops were put there), Cost of CPO and demolition and also finding private and other investors to support the scheme. The Council has just agreed to put the concept on the agenda and is looking to find some funding to conduct a study of the concept. The Tram coming to Peckham may generate some complimentary measures funding that will assist in either moving the scheme forward or to actually make the scheme happen. Shops in Rye Lane : The Peckham Town Centre Management Group (PTCMG) are looking into ways of both retaining the exciting range of ethnic and food related businesses in Peckham whilst also encouraging new and diverse businesses to come to the table. Whilst we don't want to see Peckham becoming another Clone town (aka Bromley / Croydon ...) we do want to see that the offering available suits all the local residents in the area and also attracts people from far and wide. Those of you who attended the RLSAG meeting on Monday night will have heard the comment that the best way to attract new businesses to Peckham, or to change the items that they sell is by actually stopping and shopping there and asking the businesses for the goods you want (if they don't currently stock them) Other businesses will only locate in Peckham if there is deemed to be a demand for them, therefore if you want a shop providing (for example) a M&S type offering then you need to be seen shopping in the area by the businesses so that they can justify that the demand is there for their goods. Bollards : Least said the better I think, the problem with cars tailgating the busses wasn't so much in damage to the cars but more to do with the damage to the bollard system. It cost (from what I have been told) ?50k to replace each damaged bollard after they went into the chassis of a car.... Parking / Rye Lane Traffic : The businesses down Rye Lane, in the main, don't have rear access for goods to be delivered, and as a result Southwark council has allowed loading/Unloading on one side of the street from Midnight till 1am and on the other from 1am till Midnight. This allows the businesses in the lane to receive goods, however does sometimes cause problems with traffic management when (as happened today) the Council waste team are moving slowly along Rye lane to collect trade waste. We are looking at this issue and with the upcoming Peckham Area Action Plan being taken for consultation by the Council in the next few months we hope that this is something businesses, residents and commuters will comment on to make the system work for all. Finally : (yes short response I know and you can wake up now) In order to promote Peckham, the I Love Peckham Festival is almost upon us again (weekend of 11th and 12th August) with lots of activities and events in the town centre over the weekend and other events occurring the week leading up to the event. The Businesses in the town centre (30 at last count) are involved in a shop window dressing competition with artists designing and creating interesting displays for the windows to attract the passer-by?s eye. Well worth looking out for. For more information on the Peckham Town Centre Management Group visit the Peckham Town Centre Management Group Website
