  1. I go over London Bridge and turn first left down Tooley Street. Carry on for a while and either go right down Tower Bridge Road or carry on and go next right (which is what I do). Hope this helps (and let me know if you want more details) Jon
  2. This might be a good moment to remind people of the next guided ride this saturday at 9.00am to Traflgar Square via Waterloo. Back streets again most of the way - and no Dog Kennel Hill! Full details above Jon
  3. We've now set up our first ride, the details of which follow below. The plan is to have a trial run on a Saturday morning with a "for real" ride on the following Monday. You are welcome to join in both or either. Of course, even if you don't want to use this particular route as a commute, you can always come on Saturday to get used to cycling in town. Saturday 6th October 9.00am Meet at junction of Ondine Road with East Dulwich Road (Outside "Kindly Properties"). Ride to Trafalgar Square via Waterloo and then back from Trafalgar Square over Lambeth Bridge, Kennington and Camberwell. We shall avoid Dog Kennel Hill both ways.Journey one way is about 5 or 6 miles (30-40 minutes). Monday 8th October 7.30am Repeat journey to Waterloo/Traflgar Square as above We shall be taking it very easy and will follow back roads where at all possible and making use of any available parks as well as the Canal Path in Peckham. By the very nature of a ride to central London the "fun" will be in the last mile or so, but there is no getting away from that. If you fancy joining us then please do PM me beforehand so that we can swap phone numbers in case of emergency etc Any questions then please ask. Regards Jon

  5. I've had a PM from somebody wanting to cycle to St Pauls. Does anyone have any suggestions for a quietish route? Jon
  6. Thanks for all the positive comments (and PMs). csaddleton - perfectly doable. 2 options. ED to Tower Bridge, along Cable Street cycle path and you are there in no time. Other option might be to go to Greenwich and through the foot tunnel and then up the Isle Of Dogs. If you wanted a trial run on a saturday morning I'd be happy to show you the way. I'd also be interested to know if anybody actually doing this journey had any suggestions. damzel - Never used the North X Road people but I do use the guys at BC Bikes (36 East Dulwich Road 020 7732 4170). Can't fault them for friendliness, service or price. Of course others are available. When you've sorted the bike, let me know and we can do a trial run. ziggy - don't know what the ftl route is but I go Bellenden Road, Canal Path, Grange Road, Bermondsey Street, London Bridge. Good luck with your ride (did you make it today? Lovely weather for it!!) MarkE - let me know when you are ready to start Woodland - you can but try. I did it for my daughter. Don'r remember being asked for my address. The traning was short but excellent.
  7. I've been cycling into work in the city for a few years now and find its easily the best way to get to work - quicker, cheaper and of course much healthier and you get a tremendous feeling of empowerment. I know that a lot of people are put off by the safety aspect but it can be reasonably safe if you know which way to go. I'd be happy to lead a gentle trial run (approx 5 miles) from ED to the City area, say one Saturday morning before doing it for real again on the Monday. Then take it from there. If you don't have a bike then there is a tax break "Cycle to work" scheme available which can halve the cost of buying a bike (but you do have to use it to cycle to work!) Also, don't worry about the weather - you soon get warm and it hardly ever rains - honest. Let me know if you are interested. Jon
  8. Re the 8 flats - aren't there flats already above the current Iceland? If so, the effect might be minimal from those. Not from the shoppers of course though.
  9. I don't think local residents are complaining about the existence of bars on Lordship Lane. The complaints are about noise etc at 3 in the morning - any morning but particularly a Friday or Monday morning with work to go to. Thats not unreasonable is it?
  10. I'm with fazer71 on this one. We need to build a better world. Build a future for our kids, grandkids etc where they can have a world free from pollution. Lets get everyone onto their bikes or walking - anything sustainable for the kids. As fazer71 implies, all we need some imagination. Lets do it, lets build that world. You and me fazer71, we can do it!
  11. You are right of course peckhamboy. I don't know how we go about making these changes as a society though. I would just reiterate that many, many people can cycle to work. I started doing this about 2 years ago and it is very easy once you get some confidence (and have somewhere to shower, store bike etc). Doing more to get people onto bikes might be a cheaper way of doing it. Apologies by the way as I'm sure reformed cyclists are as bad as reformed smokers!!
  12. I don't think James is being ridiculous. I'm sure you are right for some people. However most of us can get on buses, trains, bikes, own 2 feet etc etc. Maybe Taxis for that Supermarket trip or get them to deliver, just like the old days! For that to happen though local & national govt needs to invest more in sustainable transport. Making roads less attractive to cars is a start - which brings us back to the cpz. Just a thought. 13. Yes I agree, less traffic around at that time of night, wear something bright, plenty of lights. Should be OK buddug Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > Oh yes, of course, a woman cycling from London > Bridge to East Dulwich at 2am every morning would > be perfectly safe.
  14. James is right that people don't have to drive. In these circumstances it would have been possible, would it not, to cycle (I make usual assumptions of 2 fully working legs etc). Lots of people cycle to work these days, the even govt encourage it by giving tax breaks. Worth a try maybe? buddug Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > James wrote: "Cars a necessity? Half Southwark > households exist without cars." > > So that's your agenda. 15. To be fair we do at least have a Sunday service which wasn't alweays the case. Jon
  16. I also don't understand why they haven't included the proposed cycle exit from Copleston at the same time.
  17. Wee by the access points in your garden (men's wee is best apparently).
  18. Ashbourne Grove had new bumps installed yesterday. Problem with these is the reverse of Dunstan's. They are basicslly a couple of sheets of A4. Whats the point of these James Barber?
  19. This English Heritage report provides an intersting read. This is the url:- http://services.english-heritage.org.uk/ResearchReportsPdfs/054_2009WEB.pdf?bcsi_scan_8CD68D0B7A55CE69=YnsubLKjIGqVbQ4n4woi5kgBAADHK4kQ&bcsi_scan_filename=054_2009WEB.pdf
  20. I work at Liverpool Street and cycle 4 times a week and walk on the Wednesday to break it up. Started walking about 7 yrs ago and its the second best thing I ever did - takes me 1hr20 mins crossing Old Kent Rd and over Tower Bridge - its easy once you've done it a few times. Started cycling aboout 2 yrs ago - thats the best thing I ever did - and that takes 30 mins over roughly the same route (avoiding Surrey Canal path after dark). Yes I do get sweaty and I do shower at work. Much fitter and healthier (yes, and self satisfied) than I ever was as a 20 yr old. Go for it.
  21. I normally get 185 to Vauxhall then train fronm there, or can do 176 (or ED > LB train) to Waterloo
  22. I must admit that I have no idea what words like "robo-chubby" and "butthurt" mean. I do however understand words and phrases like "this place isn't for you" and "please move on"
  23. It's not a rat that has escaped from Sainsburys is it?
  24. Oh no its not!

Though I'm afraid to say that I remain to be convinced that this is funny. Each to his or her of course. Jon Edited because I'm not
