St Anthony's Primary School extension
dollydaydream replied to Jamma's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Barrybarry, why don't you find out your facts first, the children don't go there because their grandparents went to the church, one parent has to be a committed catholic and attend mass regularly, and that's the same everywhere. You say you are a christian do you attend your church regularly i.e every sunday? Why would you want to send your child to a catholic school if you are so against it and families who are committed catholics would not be able to get their children into the school, then they would be taking up places in your precious community school. As for not getting your son into scouts because your not catholic nor can any one else because the school does not have a scouts group!! They have a Beaver and Cubs groups and they have waiting lists. I don't hear you complaining about Dulwich Hamlet school getting money to improve their school, Dulwich Hamlet was a church school as far as I remember and connected to St. Barnabus church, and families were suppose to attend the church. Why didn't you send your child there? or St Johns in Ady's Rd at the bottom of Crystal Palace Rd. If your happy to send your child to a community school then what's your Problem. Why don't you just shut up moaning. -
Living next to Hamlets FC

I thought Dulwich Hamlet Football club rented out the club for social events i.e 18th and 21st birthdays etc. Didn't the boy who got stabbed a few months ago on East Dulwich Grove/Dog Kennel Hill come from the party there?? -
Best Driving route to Cornwall? Any tips welcomed :)
dollydaydream replied to vanthorne's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We travelled out on the South Circular over Kew Bridge and then there's a left sign for the M4 along side Kew Station tiny road, one way if you missed this turning then just turn left at the roundabout, it's all sign posted for the M4 west. Good Luck!! -
Best Driving route to Cornwall? Any tips welcomed :)
dollydaydream replied to vanthorne's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Like Mrs f said there is two routes M4 and M5 to Exeter and then cut across or A303 nice scenic route but I would leave as early as you can then have a leisurely stop when you have got out of London. We have been travelling to Cornwall for 30 years for holidays and the biggest problem is always getting out of London!! -
Does anyone know why Sydenham Hill is closed? It's taped off by the police by The Wood House Pub and the roundabout comming up the Hill from Hornimans.

Do you live on a steep slope with little ones?
dollydaydream replied to apenn's topic in The Family Room Discussion
To me this would be a nightmare, think of winter specially the winter we have just had, icy steps with little ones, lugging the babies and the shopping up and down the steps. edmummy said it's only for a short time, but I assume you will be staying there for years and not less than a year. I would look round for somewhere else on level ground. Also just another thought, I think houses around there suffer with subsidence. sorry to be doom and gloom. -
St Anthony's Primary School extension
dollydaydream replied to Jamma's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The school on the borders of Honor Oak/East Dulwich is St. Francesca Cabrini not Francis Caprini. -
I have friends in both Beckenham and West Wickham, both served well for primary schools but you have to look long term for the secondary schools Langley Boys and Girls (separate schools) are good but small catchment area and I don't think Balgowan area is close enough, there is Ravenswood and I think Ravensbourne secondary schools, Hayes Secondary School has a good reputation. Hayes is on the Beckenham train line. Further afield you have St Olaves Grammer(boys) and Newstead Wood (girls). Good luck with your search.

St Anthony's Primary School extension
dollydaydream replied to Jamma's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
St Anthony's like other local schools does not have a catchment as such, but like other schools people move closer to the school of their choice, the school as the same selection criteria as other schools apart from the commitment to the faith i.e Baptism and weekly mass attendence, amongst other things, looked after children and siblings, at the moment there are 45 places and if 100 children apply then selection is made after everything else considered is down to distance. Goodrich and Heber schools yearly intake is larger than St. Anthony's I think they are minimum 2 form entry if not 3. As for the parking issues, I expect parents drop off their children and then drive on to work, St. Anthony's School as to contend with the bendy bus terminating on the triangle and the no40 bus terminating almost outside the school entrance, Goodwich and Heber school as priority lanes and lollipop people to safely cross their children and not a bus insight! At the moment there is no parking at the top of Friern Rd due to road works which narrows down parking places. Most of the parents park sensibly. -
St Anthony's Primary School extension
dollydaydream replied to Jamma's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
To Clarec Why shouldn't St. Anthony's school be extended to take catholic children, this will free up places in non faith schools. The School was built in the early sixties and now needs alot of work, the school is 1 1/2 form entry, with 4 portakabin classes in the two play grounds, from reception to year 6 this will provide an extra 60 places in total. St Anthony's is vastly oversubscribed (as all the schools in East Dulwich) but will free up other school places in local state schools i.e Goodrich and Heber, alot of the children have siblings at the school so would be going to school anyway. This extension is well overdue. -
In my child's school, the children bring in a bag of individually wrapped sweets i.e. Haribo or the small Mars bar and Milky way selection bags.

reception class start date in September
dollydaydream replied to ClaireClaire's topic in The Family Room Discussion
In reception class the schools usually stagger the intake, so the school should tell when LO is starting, some schools start off the first week with mornings only the following week mornings and lunch and the following week a full week, others start off with a full day straight away. -
I'm more of a traditionalist where names are concerned, Bailey could be a girl's or boy's name, Bailey might sound ok today but in 20years time it might sound daft. I would wait until you see her then decide, pick a name that will suit her now and when she is older, and a name in which she won't be teesed or embarrassed at school, i.e NOT Apple, Trixie belle, Peaches,(got the picture) but pretty girly names like Isabella, Gabriella, Laura, Lily, Grace, Hayley, Sophia and look up the meaning of the name. I got these names from Top 100 Girls names web site. Good Luck lets us know what you choose.

If Harris school is giving out 3hour detentions for what seems like a verbal squabble when 1 hour detention would have done then what if it is a bigger problem what happens then, it's like cracking a nut with a sledge hammer, if it is a more serious problem where do you go with the detention?? It seems the teacher has over reacted.

Secondary School Allocations
dollydaydream replied to Renata Hamvas's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Yes I got my first choice, was really surprised!! this was partly the reason we moved to try and achieve it, would have been happy with 2nd choice, put 4 choices down in total. I know it's not easy my eldest did not get their 1st choice got 2nd. Each year seems to get harder and harder. I know a few children who did not get any of their choices and was allocated schools.
