  1. It is hard to see how the plans would work in practice. From where I am sitting it is a least a signal that the government is trying to ease the burden of employment laws, which tend to hit small businesses the hardest, and is at least an attempt to address the problems of low growth and unemployment, highest in the younger age groups.
  2. Perhaps not for the drawing room, but if you are interested in some of the tax outcomes of the plans for employees to be able to exchange rights for shares, there is more on my blog here: http://comanandco.co.uk/shares-for-rights

I can't help making another techy point, but heat and light for domestic use are reduced rated at 5% and are unaffected by the VAT rate rise. Also, JohnL it looks like Starbucks are showing the VAT increased price and charging the VAT at the lower rate. It will probably be 2.50 from tomorrow.

Cold take-away food and drink is zero-rated, provided it is not standard-rated food, such as confectionery or bottled water. Ask for your chips cold.
  10. On point 4. have you checked to see whether the flat would be a furnished holiday let. The tax advantages are clearer than ordinary rental.
  11. If the shops have to go to the trouble of altering their prices, they would probably use it as an opportunity to put the price up in real terms. Inflation is pretty sure to follow.

  13. "I'm Popeye the Sailor man, I'm Popeye the Sailor man..." Perhaps you recognise the song from the East Dulwich ice cream van. I would be interested to hear if you have sampled the ice cream van man's food and have comments positive or negative. Let me know if you (or your children) like the convenience of a local 7 day a week mobile confectionery and fast food service.
  14. I am a local accountant. Please let me know if you need help with your self-assessment. Regards, Ray 020 8653 4454 comanandco.co.uk
