  1. Agree with David on this. The guys in the new General Store are nice people. They're not forcing anyone to buy their stuff - and there's a bloody great payless next door with equally friendly shopkeepers, for those who want to mix and match what they buy. I buy my milk, frozen peas and newspapers in Payless. I like a fresh loaf of bread and I'm happy to pay a little more for it, so it's nice to have somewhere else as well as Andersons who'll sell it to me. At four quid, their olive oil isn't that much more than a bottle of Sainsbury's equivalent and tasted a bit nicer to me. I'll be back to try the cured meats I think. I like having my hair cut at Kuki's because they're nice and I think quite reasonable - but I also like the fact there's Chaz's there too with it's lovely hanging baskets. The Wishing Well, certainly when I went there, wasn't a particularly nice place. The Victoria Inn isn't to everyone's tastes (personally I like the Montpellier) but it's clean and welcoming for families (of which there are quite a few in the area) - and also attracts people to the area who spend money elsewhere and help stop it from being a parade of empty, sad looking shops, which a lot of it was a few years ago. Begging Bowl is a bit pricey, but it's got a nice buzz about it and the food's a little different to elsewhere, and it's nice as a treat. I think Flock and Herd is a good butcher with nice meat - not the cheapest but not the most expensive either and nice people and service which I don't mind paying a little for. It's not like we're short of butchers at the cheaper end of the market on Rye Lane. Codfellas serves nice fish and chips, Petitou is nice for a cup of coffee, as is Andersons. You can't turn back the clock and go how things were. At a time when there's a pretty stagnant economy it's just nice to see businesses thriving alongside each other.
  2. Should be fine. A lot of people get off at Denmark Hill for the hospital. Stick to the middle or back of train.
  3. It is ridiculous that they're digging the same patch up again and that it's nigh on impossible to turn out of Choumert onto Bellenden if there's busy traffic. I've previously complained to Southern Gas Networks and Morrisons utilities about the fact they didn't coordinate the works with Thames water to avoid digging up the same sections on multiple occasions. SGN to their credit replied and sent someone round but they essentially said they had no choice but to do them separately.
  4. I used one of these when we had a new kitchen put in. That plus an old fridge in the lounge and washing in the bathroom sink, we sorted it all... http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9099562.htm
  5. I don't cross a border post when I cross from SE15 to SE15. Lordship Lane is less than three quarters of a mile from my house, as is Peckham Rye station and Rye Lane. There's something to be said for both. That said I also regularly inhabit Brockley, Forest Hill, Brixton and Lewisham. There's no point being geographically conservative - embrace all that south London has to offer.
  6. Likewise, I'm a refugee from Brixton area. Lived in Peckham - near Bellenden Road - for last three years or so. Wouldn't go back. Greener, nicer range of smaller shops. Brixton definitely has its attractions - but it's not far and still available if you want it.

    Scary pubs

Chandos on Brockley Rise is probably the worst experience I've had in the wider area. Holes in the walls and ceilings - two lagers only on tap.
  8. Does anyone remember the appropriately named Green Leaf Cafe on Landor Road Stockwell. Almost just like an original Dam coffee shop.
  9. They would have to build a new station at Brixton were it to stop there as the mainline station there is on the herne hill not Denmark hill line,

  11. Look what happened to Danny Kendal though.
  12. I go down A3 coming off at Wimbledon / Putney; down along Common, past All England Club, off and down Leopold Rd, Plough Lane, Garratt Lane, Burntwood Lane, Beechcroft Road, Upper Tooting Park, then through Balham, Devonshire Road, Weir Road, then onto south circ, and via Tulse Hill. Convuluted but tends to miss the traffic except for Plough Lane when in rush hour.

Hi there, when are you open?
  14. Hi Eileen, yes, it's the alley from Bleinham Grove through to the station which is the problem. There are always large piles of black bin bags, usually ripped open, there in the morning. None of the businesses surrounding that alley seem to have any proper provision for disposing of their waste so by about 7.30 it's normally blowing down the alley. I have asked Southwark, via the environment help desk to send people to clean it, and it sometimes has a short term effect but never for very long. Most nights on returning from work there is more rubbish piled outside. It is pretty grim as most days it blocks half of the entrance to the alley. If you think there is anything you can do through the action group then i am sure it would be helpful. The fish/ rotting meat smell has mainly been over the past couple of weeks on platform three. Not sure if there is a store of gone off food nearby... Plans for the station look great. Roll on 2016!
  15. Genuinely fascinating doc on Deptford High Street. Can't wait for Camberwell Grove next week - not least as it's just a couple of streets away
  16. Exactly th same happened to me a couple of years back. I was bitten by something on my ankle, not sure whether mosquito or horse fly, and a couple of days later my lower leg swelled up to extra large proportions to the extent I couldn't fit a shoe on and couldn't walk. I went to the doctors and had to take a course of steroids, in addition to anti histamines, to help reduce the inflammation. Since then, I have reacted fairly badly to all bites - although not to such a degree that the leg has swollen again. After a bit of googling I stumbled across the Blandford Fly. I wonder if that might have caused some of my bites....
  17. Yes, it's a lovely place to live. As safe or unsafe as most of the rest of South London from Dulwich to Deptford. There's more shops open and trading than there has been for a long time on Bellenden road. The Victoria Inn and Montpellier, alongside Petitou and Andersons delis mean there's a good footfall to the area. Good independent shops like Review books, Fenton Walsh clothes, Paul's Custom Cycles and Melange chocolate also help create a good precinct alongside vintage stuff, and the mini supermarkets and takeaways. There's the convenience of Peckham's shops and transport links whilst lordship Lane is a closer walk than it is for many in East Dulwich.
  18. The area is very safe as long as you have common sense, as you should anywhere in inner London. I live on Choumert Road. Love it - all the best of Peckham amenities and transport links and ED is but a 5 minute walk away. Bellenden Road has a lively selection of cafes and local businesses and some great pubs. As people have said - I would imagine a lot lot safer than Deptford in my humble experience
  19. That's why he's got a cheeky little smile on his face all the time. Cheeky little Henry!
  20. There's an engraving from c1855 on the ideal homes site - which is generally a fascinating site for pictures of things 'how the used to be'
  21. I'm the last person to start moaning on, Daily Mail style, about modern H&S rules etc etc, but this is a little bit ludicrous. For this sort of problem to firstly occur a year after being built, but then necessitate removal of all the seating (rather than perhaps just fixing it straight away with new brackets / deeper fixings or similar) is just a bit bonkers.
  22. Have to admit that I went to the Dulwich Pool for the first time in a few months this week and was disappointed that all the men's showers seemed to be broken. There were no warning posters that I could see but the water just came out scaldingly hot from those that did work, with the valves on two of them just loosely hanging off. It's a big disappointment that, after a terrific renovation and investment, not enough care is being put into maintaining the facilities. It's also the little things that are noticeable - like tatty signage being put up in the pool area - which add to the impression that those running the pool aren't the right people to maintain what should be a fantastic facility.
  23. I think it's fantastic and great news for anyone who lives near or uses the station. Don't think anyone's suggesting Rye Lane is going to become Lordship Lane, nor should it be, but the opening up of the station square should at least reverse some of the bonkers planning / architectural decisions of second half of the last century!
  24. It would be fantastic if this did happen. Getting to Honor Oak Park from the Peckham Rye side of East Dulwich is frustratingly slow given how relatively close it is.
  25. Usual lazy Mail bollocks. If I wasn't on holiday I'd pick up the phone to the news desk and pick it up with them
