  1. Send in the enforcement car with a camera on the roof. If word gets round that people are being recorded infringing zig zags and fined, the offending parents may start modifying their behaviour. Unfortunately I think that financial penalties will be the only deterrent.
  2. Unfortunately this isn't restricted to Goodrich. St John's and St Clement's have the same issues with parents selfishly parking on zig zags to avoid a 2 minute walk from some safe parking further down the road. It seems that the parents can't be bothered to park up, get out of the car and walk their children to the playground, but just want to pull up outside the school, push their childern out and drive on. This is raised periodically with the school/council. Subsequently a token enforcement officer shows up for a day or two to move people on, but tickets never seem to be handed out as people move on before being ticketed. If safety rather than income generation was the real priority for traffic enforcement we should see school zig-zags enforced more rigorously.
  3. Just to correct a previous comment. The school on North Cross road (St John's and St Clement's) didn't close, it was relocated to bigger premises on Adys Road.
  4. We have things that I know were dispatched over a week ago that have still not arrived. I'm on Fellbrigg. I put it down to the post strikes, but am paranoid that my parcels are crushed beneath a pile of undelivered mail somewhere in a warehouse in the midlands never to be seen again.
  5. I'm so tired of seeing these threads go down the same old route. Can I suggest that any users wishing to discuss the benefit of posting this type of incident on the forum, or the pros/cons of posting perpetrators' descriptions (because it will come up), do so on a separate thread. Then those users who do find this post useful can take a note, and those who wish to debate the more general issues surrounding muggings etc. can debate away without bloating the specific threads.
  6. I use the badminton courts at Harris Girls on a pay as you go basis. About ?9.00 an hour I think.
  7. I had my hand broken in a similar attack to this a few years ago. A group of youths were wacking cyclists with large branches as they passed. I parried a blow with my hand and broke a knuckle even with motorbike gloves on. Reported to police, but not sure what action was taken. Sad to hear this is still going on.
  8. Just giving this a last bump in case anyone has seen our camera that we lost yesterday. As implied previously the camera is old and low spec, but I'd really like to get back the memory card with our pictures. Thanks
  9. We dropped our Sanyo Xacti camera between Crystal Palace Rd and Fellbrigg Road today around 2:30pm. Probably when we were passing the Uplands and had to stop to do up our son's coat. We realised before we got home, but it was nowhere to be seen when we retraced our steps. We asked in The Uplands but no-one has handed it in. The camera is rubbish, but it has a month's worth of photos on it that I haven't uploaded yet and can't be replaced, so I'd really like it back; even the memory card would be welcome.
  10. Just come back from Dawsons Hill. Great hill for sledging and not too many people.
  11. They are stopping cyclists too. I got pulled over on Half Moon Lane yesterday. Presumably analysing travel patterns, as they were asking where I was travelling from, too and stops on the way etc.
  12. Keef said "And yes blinder, had I seen someone acting in the manner of the cyclist, as described by Carolyn in her original post, get a smack, I would find it hilarious! Sorry it that makes me a terrible person." You are indeed a terrible person. Getting "a smack" is often followed by the person being punched smacking their head on the pavement with potential for serious injuries. Not funny at all.
  13. My advice is to buy a cheap and nasty second hand bike, and a lock that's worth much more than the bike. I bought a bike for ?10 of a forum member about 6 months ago, leave it at Herne Hill station every day and it's not been nicked yet. Even forgot the lock once, but it was still there in the afternoon. It sounds like a bag of spanners and is heavy and clumsy, but for a 10 or 15 minute ride it's fine. With regards to locks, Brixton Cycles told me some years ago, that the only lock they had trouble getting off customer's bikes who'd lost the key were the big Kryptonite style motorbike chain locks, so I bought one of those. They're heavy, but give peace of mind.

    Wren (Lounged)

We had a nest full of baby wrens outside our bathroom window last year. They sounded wonderful every morning. Unfortunately the local cats got the lot before they had chance to leave the nest.
  15. I've been cycling in London for nearly 20 years now and had 2 broken hands (1 riding into a car door that opened without looking, and 1 being whacked with a big stick by a group of youths as I rode past). Also had a broken foot when a lorry pulled up to park without noticing I was on the inside (considered myself lucky there). Many other near misses too. I'm a much more considered cyclist now than I used to be when younger, and consider arriving safely more important than arriving quickly. It's important not to vilify cyclists, car drivers or motorcyclists, but to consider all as road users. Bad road users should be criticised be they drivers or cyclists. I hate cyclists jumping red lights. Another personal bug bear of mine is cyclists pulling up at the lights and parking them selves in front of my bike when I was there first; just plain rude. Motorists often annoy me too; however the big difference being that their behaviour could literally be a matter of life or death. Too many motorists consider it a right to drive on public roads. Considering how dangerous careless drivers are, it should be viewed as a privilege that you lose if you can't drive safely.
  16. Mark Stewart. His version of Jerusalem shattered my musical boundaries as a youth.
  17. The rest of my family love the Sea Cow, but I rarely go as there are no Veggie alternatives at all. Most chip shops offer at least a Jamaican veg patty or a cheese and onion pie. If processed food isn't their bag, then why not develop some type of home made beanburger or similar that you could batter and fry.
  18. Turns out shirt sales are now handled by the club themselves. So if anyone else fancies a shirt for Christmas, turn up at the Dulwich Hamlet reception and ask for Lorraine Gorman.
  19. Both my kids have asked for Dulwich Hamlet shirts for Christmas. Does anyone have contact details of someone who sells them? I've tryed calling the Hamlets Healthclub, but as far as they know they're only available on match days and I've missed the boat for home match days before Christmas.

Alan Being a Cleethorpes lad like yourself, I too can recommend the seals. We also take the kids to see them when visiting The North, although we were turned away one Christmas as it was too busy! Completely agree about people not making the most of the UK for holidays, although Mrs Cookie would take a little more convincing :)
  21. I always had pre-conceived ideas about R4 as a plummy station, but tuned in for a Kraftwerk special recently. Will be keeping more of an eye out in the future for other interesting features.
  22. UK Subs at Cleethorpes Winter Gardens 1980. There was a lot of spitting!
  23. I've been cycling to work for over 15 years now. East Dulwich to Moorgate, then changed to Marylebone, then changed to Swiss Cottage. I've now bought a folder and cycle to Herne Hill for the train to Sutton. Mattham what route do you take to Sutton? If I buy a proper bike I might start doing it. Had 2 broken hands and 1 broken foot though. 1 broken hand because of door opening into my path, 1 because of youths hitting cyclists with sticks on the way past and the broken foot when a lorry decided to pull into the pavement on top of me (counted myself lucky that time).
  24. I've complained about cars on the yellow zig zags outside St John's and St Clement's before. Usually results in a token traffic warden for one morning, then back to business as usual the day after. Richard Thomas has been good in the past at replying to emails though.
