ATTENTION! On Nov 29th we have 2 rides both starting at London Bridge. One is a Jamie’s 3 hour circuit to Spitalfields Old Market and the other a short ride led by Jacqui (first time leading for us) to the Snoopy Trail in the City. Nov 29th, Ride 1. London Bridge to Covent Garden and Spitalfields < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-bridge-to-covent-garden-and-spitalfields-cycle-ride-tickets-1975020568687?aff=oddtdtcreator > Jamie will lead a 3 hour ride to one of our favourite destinations. Start 10am, Southwark Needle, SE side London Bridge. Back by 1pm. Big loop probably including Covent Garden and Smithfields Market. Break at Spitalfields – even time for a bit of shopping! Mostly quiet streets, few major crossings, traffic usually light on a Saturday.. Flat ride, easy pace, suitable for all levels of cyclist. Come and join us. Nov 29th, Ride 2. The Snoopy Trail in the City . < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/snoopy-in-the-city-cycle-ride-tickets-1975000559840?aff=oddtdtcreator > The ride will be about 8 miles and take about 2 hours. Starting at Burgess Park (Stomping Grounds Café, Chumleigh Gardens, SE5 0RJ) at 10am and finishing at the Southwark Needle (Southwark Bridge) around 12 noon. A led ride will be available for anyone needing to return to Burgess Park. We'll go via C10 and cross the river at Blackfriars Bridge. There we can pick up the Snoopy in the City Sculpture Trail. The trail is designed for walking so it's very much a stop-dismount-start ride as we approach each installation. Plenty time for photos. The Traill ends near St Paul's Cathedral. From there we'll stop at the reflective pool at 25 Cannon Street and take a look at Finsbury Circus before finishing the ride at London Bridge. An easy fun ride. General. Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe. If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. These rides are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides organised by Southwark Cyclists, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/.

Ride 2, Nov 22nd 2025. Cutty Sark to Belmarsh Prison < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cutty-sark-to-belmarsh-prison-tickets-1972868331287?aff=oddtdtcreator > Belmarsh Maximum Security Prison. Often in the news, seldom in a positive story. But we rode there in March and all survived unscathed (see report). Always willing to push his luck Mike K. is going to lead this route again. Start 10am at Cutty Sark Gardens, next to the foot tunnel entrance. Follow the Thames Path passing Greenwich University, the O2 and the Thames Barrier. Turn off at Galleons Reach and continue to the top of the Tor. After enjoying the view continue the ride to Belmarsh. For the return will take the Thames path to Woolwich Arsenal for our coffee break. Then proceed along it returning to the Cutty Sark at approximately 1pm. These rides are part of a regular program -
NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below. On Nov 22nd we have one ride, to Battersea, organised so far. Philippa leading a ride to Battersea Power Station and Battersea Park. Always lots to see on this route especially this time of year with the big ice rink open at the Power Station. Total distance about 13 miles. Including coffee stop should be back by 1pm. Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below. On Nov 15th we have 2 rides, both starting at 10am at London Bridge. One is a long ride to Camden Market and the other a slightly shorter themed ride, Dickens’s London Ride 1. London Bridge to Camden Lock < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-bridge-to-camden-lock-cycle-ride-tickets-1963560447155?aff=oddtdtcreator > Camden Lock – shops, markets, cafes, busy. On a ride, normally avoid it. However, it is a great destination – and lots of options for a coffee stop. Start 10am at Southwark Needle (south end of London Bridge, close to the station, SE1 2PF) with Amanda leading for an estimated 3.5 hour ride. Outward route along south side to Westminster Bridge, then Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, Marble Arch, Baker St, Regents Park Outer Circle, Camden High St. Return via Canal Tow Path to Kings Cross Granary Square, Cycleway 6 to Farringdon, up Ludgate Hill and past St Pauls. Down to Cycleway 3 and if time loop over Tower Bridge and Tooley St back to London Bridge. Some roads with lots of traffic. But pretty much non-stop sight-seeing and photo-ops! Report from last year at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2024/ride-reports-16th-nov-2024/ Ride 2. Dickens’s London: Borough to Clerkenwell . < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dickenss-london-borough-to-clerkenwell-cycle-ride-tickets-1963594553167?aff=oddtdtcreator > A short quiz: What’s so interesting about the Horn Tavern in Knightrider Street? What family lived in Bleeding Heart Yard? Where did Dickens live while his father was in the Marshalsea? And why was he rude about Clerkenwell Green? Ride leader John S. will reveal the answers on this 13 mile ride starting and finishing at the Southwark Gateway Needle on the south side of London Bridge. Start 10am from London Bridge and head for Ludgate Hill and Fleet Street, before turning north for Clerkenwell via Saffron Hill. From there we return to Fleet Street via Gray’s Inn Road and stop for a coffee break at Aldwich. We cross Waterloo Bridge and follow Webber Street and Great Suffolk Street to Borough, and so back to London Bridge. Along the way we will stop very briefly to look at some places and buildings associated with Dickens. NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below. ATTENTION! The new ride info here is for Nov 1st, Saturday week. The rides for this Saturday, Oct25th are Islington and Peckham to Beckenham Place Park. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/peckham-to-beckenham-place-park-healthy-ride-tickets-1835385239659?aff=oddtdtcreator > and Parks & Commons Ride from Dulwich. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/parks-commons-ride-from-dulwich-tickets-1847020420799?aff=oddtdtcreator > On Nov 1st we have one long ride to Lesnes Abbey and a short one exploring Bermondsey. Ride 1. Bermondsey Tour. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bermondsey-tour-by-bike-tickets-1860285537119?aff=oddtdtcreator> Bermondsey, the area along the Thames between Rotherhithe and Tower Bridge has been in the news recently. This year’s Stirling Prize has gone to a Bermondsey development. We will pass this on our route. Bermondsey has a long history. The wharves along the Thames were used to import food which in turn spawned food processing factories inland. The social history was interesting. Dickens describes Bermondsey as having the worst slums in London but in the early 20th century this area was a pioneer in slum clearance and social housing. On this easy ride we will pass the site of a medieval abbey, signs of tannin, a biscuit factory being repurposed and more. Start 10am in Deal Porter Square, opposite Canada Water Station, finish there 12 noon. 9 miles of cycling, frequent short stops, maybe even time for a coffee at the finish. Bruce leading. Route map with list of sites of interest at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1G-3W6xSCsWXFZPea5hSb5sd2yCSylZ4&usp=sharing Ride 2. Cutty Sark to Lesnes Abbey. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cutty-sark-to-lesnes-abbey-bike-ride-tickets-1860216951979?aff=oddtdtcreator > Meet at Cutty Sark next to the Foot Tunnel entrance. Start at 10:00am and will continue out and back, returning to Cutty Sark at approximately 13:30pm. Mike K. leading. Route will follow the Thames Path and then round past the O2. From there will continue along the Thames Path past the Greek-inspired statues in North Greenwich and the Thames Barrier, eventually reaching Galleon’s Reach. Galleon’s Reach holds historical significance as it was the place where the Princess Alice sank, costing 900 live in September of 1878. We will then join the Green Path towards Thamesmead murals and stop for group photos before proceeding on to Lesnes Abbey ruins for a coffee break. We will return by the Ridgeway path to Woolwich before joining the Thames Path again back to Greenwich. On Oct 18th we have one 3 hour ride to “hidden gem” Charlton House and a longer 4 hour ride, one of our regular favourites, to Trinity Buoy Wharf and beyond. Ride 1. Charlton House. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/peckham-to-charlton-house-cycle-ride-tickets-1801948058149?aff=oddtdtcreator > Charlton House is one of the finest surviving Jacobean manor houses in England. With free entry you can explore the panelled rooms. and the walled gardens and get refreshments in Frillys Tea Room. Ride starts from Peckham Square (next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre) at 10am on a 13-mile route planning to finish in 3 hours. Bruce leading. Outward leg quiet streets and Cycleway 4 to Greenwich, then on to Greenwich Park. Up the hill, exit to Vanbrugh Park, through Blackheath Standard and more road to Charlton House. Break there to look at the house and/or get a coffee. Return through Charlton Park, past Charlton Lido and on to Sun in the Sands underpass and quiet streets to Blackheath. Cross the Heath to the SW corner then down Morden hill to Elverson Rd DLR Station. Cross to Brookmill Park, ride through Deptford and rejoin the outward route at Folkestone Gardens. If time continue on C10 and the Canal Path back to Peckham Square. If pushed for time just retrace the outward route. Report with photos from last year’s ride at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2024/ride-reports-9th-nov-2024/. Ride 2. Trinity Buoy Wharf. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/trinity-buoy-wharf-and-barrier-park-ride-tickets-1802614381139?aff=oddtdtcreator > Start/finish Southwark Needle, south side London Bridge, 9.30am. NOTE EARLY START. Amanda leading and aiming to finish before 1.30pm. We subtitled this ride the first time we did it in 2018 “The New, The Old and The Derelict”. There is now less of the derelict and more of the new and the route changes to reflect this. Set off to Canary Wharf, then a loop for Trinity where will have a stop with time for a look round. Then on to Barrier Park North and the Royal Docks and back to London Bridge. About 15 miles. For those of you who have not visited Trinity Buoy Wharf, try to get on this ride. Completely unique site with 2 decent cafes and some interesting art. Plus the history related to Trinity House and Michael Faraday.
