NOTE. You must register for the ride on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below. The new rides with information here are for Saturday 2nd August, On Aug 2nd we have 2 long rides. We are trying again with Amanda’s Cody Dock ride that was cancelled 2 weeks back due to an Amber weather warning. The second ride will be a new one, Owen continuing his campaign to get us out into Essex. Aug 02, Ride 1. Cutty Sark to Cody Dock. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cutty-sark-to-cody-dock-cycle-ride-tickets-1526644116649?aff=oddtdtcreator > Please note. Electric bikes are not allowed on the cable car. This means we cannot accommodate e-bikes on this ride. Sorry. 9.30 start (not usual 10am) from Cutty Sark, next to the tunnel entrance. Amanda leading a cross river circuit to Cody Dock. Cody Dock is run as a charitable Social Enterprise with the aim of regenerating the dock and surrounding waterways (see https://codydock.org.uk). What has been created is quite special. And it includes a Cafe where we will take a break. We plan to use the “by air and by sea” route. Outward will go to the Cable Car at the O2 via the Thames path, then fly across the river and head for Cody Dock. Return will be via the free Woolwich Ferry followed by the Thames path back to Greenwich. If short of time will return via Isle of Dogs and use DLR from Mudchute to cross the river. Bring Travel Card etc. for the Cable car (full fare is £7). Aim is to be back by 1.30pm. Aug 02, Ride 2. Upminster to Southend. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/upminster-to-southend-cycle-ride-tickets-1526787856579?aff=oddtdtcreator > The ride starts at Upminster library at 9.30am. We head East into the Essex countryside. Our first stop at 11 miles is Langdon Hills country park at One Tree Hill for toilets and a coffee truck. Our second stop at 20 miles is at Hadley Park café. At 25.5 miles is Southend seafront our destination and our lunch break. Aim to be at Southend by 12.30. Give ourselves an hour for lunch and set off back at 1.30. Those that want to leave the ride at this point can catch the c2c train from Southend Central back to London. Trains run every 20 minutes. The journey back traces much of the route outbound but we will have only one stop roughly half way at The Doorstep Cafe, The Knares, in Basildon. We'll then return to Upminster library after a short break aiming to arrive there about 4.30. Upminster station is step free. In Zone 6, longish journey on District line (e.g. Monument, 42min, £3.70). Bit quicker on c2c from Fenchurch St, 22min, £3.80). Upminster Library is 400m south of the station, mostly along busy Station Road. Personal memories of Southend from Ride Leader Owen I remember as a 9 year old boy, a recent immigrant from Hong Kong with virtually no English, being woken up in the middle of a cold winter's night to go fishing. After wiping the sleep from my eyes I joined my father and our compassionate elderly neighbour, a keen fisherman, to drive down to Southend to fish off the end of the pier. Still in pitch darkness we dropped lines with about half a dozen hooks on each line into the water. When the tide came in we pulled in our lines and there were two, three, four flat fish on each line. Fish were plentiful in those days and the town was a major holiday destination. Southend today may not glisten the way it used to but on sunny summer weekends thousands of day trippers still pack the promenades. You hear Chubby Chequer being belted out from arcades along with the ping, ping, ping sound of pinball machines and the occasional crashing of coins as a lucky punter registers a winning line on the fruit machine. You hear choruses of screaming from those on fairground rides. Every kid seems to be holding a candy floss or an ice cream cone and every adult has a big grin on their face. Best of all is the ubiquitous seductive aroma of fish and chips with lashings of malt vinegar and pickled onions wafting along the seafront. Southend seafront is still an amazing place to visit. Southend still touches my heart. What are your memories of Southend? Better still join me on my bike ride from Upminster to Southend and back. General Information Riders of all ages are welcome on Southwark Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe. If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. How to cancel: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/help/en-gb/articles/557726/how-to-cancel-or-delete-a-free-order/. Remember finish times are approximate and it is best not to schedule something immediately after the ride; give yourself an allowance for mechanical or other problems on the ride. These rides are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/. Note. The Whitstable Awayday on the 26th is full with 6 on the Wait List. But all is not lost there is a second rideon the 26th. It's the Thames Loop Cycle Ride from Canada Water. Always something new to see on this favourite short anti-clockwise loop that follows the Thames on both banks. An easy 11 mile ride we use DLR to cross river at Greenwich (travel pass or equivalent needed) and return over London Bridge. Meet up 10am in Deal Porter Square, opposite Canada Water Station and next to Canada Water Library. Route includes Russia Woodland, Deptford Historic Waterfront, Shadwell Basin and canal-side paths to St Katherines Dock. Coffee stop on return leg. No hills, mostly off road, cycle lanes or quiet streets. Simon K. leading. It will be possible to join the ride at Greenwich Station. Meet 10.25am outside the front of the station on Greenwich High Rd, near the Novotel (not by the DLR entrance). Please indicate on the registration form whether you will be joining at Greenwich. We last did this ride on a very cold day in January (https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2025/ride-report-11th-jan-2025/; should be rather warner on the 26th. Coffee stop at the Green and Brown Café then the ascent through the park, via the dinosaurs, to Crystal Palace Parade. Finally the glorious downhill all the way back to Dulwich Park. A ride we regularly do in mid-winter, but it will make an excellent summer ride too. Everyone welcome on an easy ride with lots to see (and forecast is good again!). NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below. We have 2 rides on 12th July both starting from Cutty Sark at 9.30 (note early start time). Gives everyone a chance to meet up. Eva is heading southeast to Eltham while Jamie is crossing the river to dockland. Ride 1. Eltham Surprises. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/eltham-surprises-cycle-ride-tickets-1467812489669?aff=oddtdtcreator > Eva leading ride that will visit the 4 Ps of Eltham - a Pleasance, a Palace, a Pavillion and Parks, plus a Winter Garden. Late coffee stop at the cafe in Oxleas Wood. This ride has 2 fairly steep hills, where the ride leader might step down from the bike and push it up, it’s ca 24 km long and including a visit to the Pavillion and the coffee break stop will take us ca 3 hours. Start at Cutty Sark Gardens, 9.30 am. Ride 2. Royal Docks Loop from Greenwich. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/greenwich-to-royal-docks-loop-ride-tickets-1467815247919?aff=oddtdtcreator > Jamie leading. About 13 miles. Start 19.30m at Cutty Sark next to the Foot Tunnel. Finish around 1pm (allowing time for a coffee break). Start through Foot Tunnel then east side of Isle of Dogs to Blackwall, East India Dock Basin, Lee flyover cycle path, Royal Victoria Dock, Excel Centre, Royal Albert Dock, London City Airport. Start return over Sir Steve Redgrave Bridge, then across Woolwich Ferry. Back along Thames Path (NCN 4) past Flood Barrier and O2. Map at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=179ZFRIA-lVf_FKGXBELKq7gwS20w_7f1&usp=sharing. We should perhaps warn anyone thinking of joining this ride that it does have a rather chequered history. For example have a read of the remarkable report from May 28th 2022 (https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2022/ride-report-28th-may-2022/. NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below. We have 2 rides on 5th July, a fairly short local ride to Wimbledon Park and the already posted ride in Epping Forest that was cancelled in June due to poor weather. Will detail the Wimbledon ride first, then give a reminder about the Epping ride second. Dulwich to Wimbledon Park < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dulwich-to-wimbledon-park-southwark-healthy-cycle-ride-tickets-1444478627459?aff=oddtdtcreator > Eduardo leading a ride through 5 of our South London parks and commons. 15 miles. 10am –1pm. Start/finish Dulwich Clock Café, Dulwich Park SE21 7BQ. Route: Dulwich Park via Brockwell Park, Clapham Common, Wandsworth Common to Wimbledon Park. Return same route. Mostly quiet streets, occasional busy junction, lots of easily cycled paths in the parks and on the commons. Coffee stop in Wimbledon Park. We have done this interesting ride several times, most recently in September last year, report here. Reminder of second ride on July 5th. Just a few places left. Epping Forest Ramble < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/epping-forest-ramble-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-1391596836599?aff=oddtdtcreator > Owen seems determined to get us all out into the Essex countryside. Following his successful Essex Ramble last month (https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2025/ride-reports-3rd-may-2025/) he has devised another. We are heading to Epping Forest this time. A 27km (16 miles) circuit from Chingford to Epping and back. Farthest point on the ride will be at Epping Signalling Museum. Coffee stop will be at High Beech. Other places of interest we will stop at will be Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge and Connaught Water. The ride will start at 9.30am at Chingford Station (E4 6AL) and will finish at approximately 1.30pm back at Chingford Station. We are mostly off road - 70% on gravel, 5% on grass. Just 25% on tarmac (paths and road). We think a Brompton would be OK. However NOT a road bike with slim wheels, need hybrid size tyres with plenty grip. Sections of the route are “undulating” and overall it will be a challenging ride, A reasonable level of fitness will be needed. GPX file of route at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/route-for-epping-forest-ramble/ Getting to Chingford from Central London. Obvious option is Overground (Weaver Line) from Liverpool St. 27 min ride, trains every 15 min, fare £3.60. Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe. If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below. As we try to do we have a short and a long ride on 21st. Short ride is round Inner London visiting international bakeries, yum-yum! The long ride is Jamie’s annual outing to Richmond Park, always enjoyable. June 21. Ride 1. Richmond Park from Waterloo. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/richmond-park-from-waterloo-cycle-ride-tickets-1407623843809?aff=oddtdtcreator > Ride details from Ride leader Jamie in his inimitable style. Note early 9.30 start time. Mission To cycle from Waterloo Station to Richmond Park, Richmond Bridge, Marble Hill, Eel Pie Island and Twickenham Station from where we will catch a train back to Waterloo Station. Coordinating Instructions and Timings. Riders will meet at 9.30am on Saturday 29th June 2024 outside and under the Waterloo Station Victory Arch that is 50 yards up on the right from where York Road meets Mepham Street and Cab Road. A short safety brief will be given at the meeting RV point before departing. We envisage being back at Waterloo by approximately 3pm trains permitting. Route This is a relaxed and social ride that involves some very enjoyable cycling in stages for about 20 miles. Much of our route is on quiet, vehicle-free roads with some use of riverside paths. Checks and Equipment Riders are advised to pre-check their bikes before the ride. ABC bike safety checks. Air/Brakes/Chain/Drive. Also check for play in wheels. Riders are further advised to bring: - a warm fleece, waterproofs, puncture canister, bike lock, bike pump and water bottle. Rations and Water There will be a coffee stop and we will lunch at Pembroke Lodge Café in Richmond Park. Riders are also welcome to bring their own picnic lunch/snack should they wish. Contact Please feel free to contact me with any queries regarding this event on 07976 803741 or at jamie.pedrick@outlook.com Note from Rides Coordinator: this is a long ride and will include some towpath. Riders need to be experienced enough to cope, June 21. Ride 2. Baklava, Bagels, Barfi, Brot, Baguette and Le Magnifique! A cycle ride round London’s international bakeries < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bike-ride-baklava-bagels-barfi-brot-baguette-and-le-magnifique-tickets-1407328981869?aff=oddtdtcreator > Ride Leader Eva is bored with the typical English offering of brownies, shortbread and flapjack, and wants to share the many alternative offerings of some international bakeries in London. We will have 2 coffee stops, and will stop at the other bakeries to allow riders to buy goods to take home. Whilst the ride is only about 10 miles long and mainly flat, due to the potential for many stops it might take ca 2.5 hours. Starts at London Bridge (Southwark Gateway Needle, South side, near London Bridge Station) at 10 am. Finish there (hopefully) by 12.30. Route at Baklava, Bagels, Barfi, Brot, Baguette and Le Magnifique! | ride | Komoot In order to be able to manage the stops and resulting delays, the number of riders will have to be limited. Please do not attend without an Eventbrite booking. Two rides for June 14th. A short ride from Dulwich including 2 places that really surprised me when first seen and a long ride heading north up the River Lea. June 14. Ride 1. Two Surprises in Brixton. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/two-surprises-in-brixton-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-1401961718239?aff=oddtdtcreator > When exploring on Healthy rides you occasionally come across something very surprising. Two of the most amazing were Brixton Mill and Ebony Horse Club. In the middle of houses and next to a prison, a fully functioning windmill. In a small park near Loughborough Junction, a riding stables with people circulating on horses. These 2 locations have been incorporated into this gentle 9½ mile circuit along with several parks and a common. Start will be Dulwich Park Café (Clock Café, middle of the park) at 10am. Back at 12.30pm. Route up Greendale, Ruskin Park, Wyck Gardens (Ebony Horse Club), Clapham Common, Blenheim Gardens Estate (Brixton Windmill), Brockwell Park, Belair Park and back to Dulwich Park. Owen and I have decided to postpone the Epping Forest Ramble until July 5th. Due to bad forecast for Saturday and only 3 registrants. Hope we get better weather on 5th July. For tomorrow there is space on the Power Stations ride starting 10am from Burgess Park. This is shorter and on tarmac all the way so will be OK if the forecast is correct. Dress appropriately!
