The second ride is one we do most years to see what’s new at Kings Cross. Ride 1. Peckham to Kings Cross < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/peckham-to-kings-cross-cycle-ride-tickets-1276560359399 > 9.30am start from Peckham Square (next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5RY). 3 hour ride. To Kings Cross. Granary Square for a coffee break (in market, under cover) and a bit of a look round. Outward route Cycleways 10 & 6. Over Blackfriars Bridge. Farringdon then quiet streets and safe crossings to Kings Cross. Return leg will take a more easterly route with a bit of Regents Canal path and crossing Southwark Bridge back to Peckham. Flat route with lots to see, come and join us. Amanda leading. Ride 2. Canada Water to Peckham Rye Park < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/canada-water-to-peckham-rye-park-ride-tickets-1276562044439 > A 10 mile circuit passing numerous points of interest and including several places where infrastructure improvements are planned. Start via Cycleway 14 to Jamaica Rd passing the rapidly disappearing Supersewer Site. Next a backstreets route to Cycleway 10 at Willow Walk. This route is scheduled for a significant upgrade including a new cycle crossing of Grange Road. From Willow Walk quiet streets and the Canal Path to Peckham square then Rye Lane to Peckham Rye Park. Cycle the length of the park stopping at the River Peck and then at The Round Café for a break. Homeward ride to Queen’s Rd Station via the tiny Kirkwood Nature Reserve. Continue through Brimmington park and across to Ilderton Road. Work has started here on a cycle crossing of the Old Kent Road. A new cycleway is planned to continue to Surrey Quays and we will follow the route to Southwark Park before getting back to Canada Water. Aim to finish about 12.30. The second ride marks Intl Women’s Day, but note open to all. 8th March, Ride 1. Herne Hill Station to Onion Garden, Victoria < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cycle-ride-from-herne-hill-station-to-onion-garden-victoria-tickets-1262332984939 > The Onion Garden is a delightful little garden hidden between offices and homes in the backstreets of Victoria. This ride leaves from the main entrance to Herne Hill Station (on the Railton Road side, What 3 Words: ///lists.spoken.couches). Route: Railton Road LTN / through Brixton / C5 to Victoria / coffee stop at the Onion Garden. Return via Chelsea Bridge, past Battersea Power Station, round the back of Brixton and through Brockwell Park. 19 km (12 miles). Mainly flat using cycleways and backstreets, crossing a few busier roads. You can view the route here in Google maps. Ride leader Mike T. 8th March, Ride 2. Women “Up West” < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/women-up-west-a-ride-for-inernational-womens-day-tickets-1262629281169 > Easy-paced bike ride visiting various monuments & memorials to women, in and around central London, to mark International Women's Day (8th March). Jane leading a different route from last time (2022). We'll be stopping to hear brief details of some scientists, stars and spies (amongst others), with a short break at Russell Square. Mostly using cycleways and quiet roads with some short stretches on busy main roads where necessary, also some walking with bikes to look at monuments in places where cycling is not permitted. Total distance about 10 miles. Start 10h00, Lambeth Palace Forecourt, SE1 7JU, finish there by 13h30 at the latest.   3. I think that the flood that is meant to be alleviated would be in Rye Lane. The aim is to keep the water in the park and release it slowly so that land closer to the Thames is not inundated
  4. A bund is just a raised band of earth. Looks like one in the SW corner to me, assuming i've got my compass the right way up

Start 10am, Southwark Needle, south side of London Bridge, near London Bridge Station. Route: London Bridge / Cannon Street / Queen Street / Cycleway 3 / Westminster Bridge/ past Big Ben/ Parliament Sq / Buckingham Palace. Return down The Mall / Horse Guards/ Parliament Sq and on to London Bridge. Probable coffee stop near Birdcage Walk. Easy about 8 mile ride. Nearly all protected lanes or cycleways, flat except for slight upgrades to the bridges. Back by 12.30. Feb 22nd. On previous Thames Path rides there were suggestions that we include Belmarsh Prison. Mike K., ever keen to oblige, has now checked out a route and will lead a ride there. Start 10am at Cutty Sark Gardens, next to the foot tunnel entrance. Follow the Thames Path passing Greenwich University, the O2 and the Thames Barrier. Turn off at Galleons Reach and continue to the top of the Tor. After enjoying the view continue the ride to Belmarsh. For the return will take the Thames path to Woolwich Arsenal for our coffee break. Then proceed along the Thames Path returning to the Cutty Sark at approximately 1pm. March 1st. Ride 2. No route map, but I will know where we're going on the day!” Back by 12.30 and, sorry, no coffee stop. They house a Social Enterprise Community Cafe operated by The Royal Foundation of St Katharine. If you have never been there, try to join this ride. If you have been there before, then you will probably want to return. Start 10am Peckham Square, next to Peckham library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5RY. OUTWARD: start Peckham, over Tower Bridge and through Wapping. RETURN: Thames Path down the Isle of Dogs to Greenwich, either crossing via the tunnel or if not working, DLR via Mudchute back to Peckham. Plan to be back by 1pm. About 13 miles. Amanda leading. It is a 9 mile route with 10 stops. Bruce leading. Start/finish Burgess Park Café, Chumleigh Gdns 10am start. First stop East Lane where Charlie was born, then St Johns Church where his parents married. Next West Squ, another place Charle lived, then the Imperial Was Museum, which was Bethlem Hospital where his mother was a patient. Into Kennington to the Three Stags pub, frequented by Charlie’s father, followed by the Lambeth Workhouse, now the Cinema Museum, with which Charie was well acquainted. Finally 3 more places where Charlie lived and another popular pub. Early 9.30 start from London Bridge (Southwark Gateway Needle). Cross the river probably over London Bridge, make our way to Cycleway 2 and follow this through Whitechapel and Mile End, to Bow. Join the Lea Navigation path and follow it up to Hackney Marshes at Markfield Park. Stop there for a break. On the return trip, we cross briefly to the other side of the canal, coming down through Hackney Marshes, and then retrace our steps for a while, passing by Bow and continuing to the Limehouse Cut down to Limehouse and along to London Bridge. So lots of towpath – maximum care needed and always giving way to pedestrians. If necessary be prepared to walk sections of the narrow Limehouse Link towpath. John S. leading, 22 miles in all, back by 2pm (hopefully a bit sooner). Additional ride for Feb 1st. Back by 12h30. This is pretty much the ride we cancelled at the start of January due to bad weather. This time a Peckham start and slightly shorter at 13km, 8 miles. Gives time for pauses at the many points of interest and viewpoints and to have a coffee break at the museum. Outward via Ruskin Park, Greendale, Herne Hill Velodrome, Dulwich Park and Dawson’s Heights. Return via Camberwell Old Cemetery, Aquarius Golf Course and Peckham Rye Park. A few small hills with time to walk the steeper bits. Mostly quiet streets and paths with just a few stretches of busier road. Leader Bruce. Route can include the off road Waterlink Way and the Park itself has an impressive Mansion and a good café (Homestead). Meet at Deal Porter Square next to Canada Water Library, opposite the station or meet at 10.25 at Haggerston Overground Station. For the outward leg will take the Windrush Line (Overground) to Haggerston. Both stations are step free access. Be sure to bring contactless card (£2.80 fare) or equivalent. The ride back is full of interest including London Fields, short stretches of Regents Canal towpath, Victoria Park, Mile End Park, Limehouse Basin and St Katherines Dock. Finish over Tower Bridge and back to Canada Water via Cycleway 14. Usual easy-paced ride on lots of off road paths and some quiet streets. Back by 12.30. Hopefully time for a coffee stop somewhere. Start 10am, finish around 12.30 (allowing time for a coffee break). Route starts across to Peckham Rye Park then over the hill at Nunhead and down to the Waterlink Way at Ladywell Fields. Follow the off-road Waterlink Way (Nat Route 21) for nearly 2 miles to Lower Sydenham. Continue on quiet streets to Cator Park followed by a loop through Penge to Crystal Palace Park. Check out the dinosaurs, then up the hill to Crystal Palace Parade. Steep in places, but plenty of time to walk stretches if necessary (you will not be the only one doing this!). For 11th Jan we have a new longish ride from Cutty Sark to Hall Place, Bexley and a short Thames Loop ride from Canada Water, this one of our regular routes. 11th Jan, Ride 1, Cutty Sark to Hall Place < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cutty-sark-to-hall-place-cycle-ride-tickets-1128830314859 > Hall Place started as a Tudor mansion and was then extended in the 17th century. There is lots of history, fine gardens and a modern Riverside Café (info at https://www.hallplace.org.uk/). Start 10am, Cutty Sark, near the foot tunnel entrance. To begin the ride, we go up Greenwich hill then across Blackheath. Then to Eltham Park South, then on to Danson Park on the left and Blackfen on the right. From there to Hall Place. This ride is mostly cycle path and quiet roads. After our coffee break will return by the route we came. Aim to finish by 1:30pm. This easy 11 mile ride uses DLR to cross river at Greenwich (travel pass or equivalent needed) and returns over London Bridge. Meet up 10am in Deal Porter Square, opposite Canada Water Station and next to Canada Water Library. Route includes Russia Woodland, Deptford Historic Waterfront, Mudchute DLR, Shadwell Basin and canal-side paths to St Katherines. Coffee stop on return leg. No hills, mostly off road, cycle lanes or quiet streets. Simon K. leading. It will be possible to join the ride at Greenwich Station. Meet 10.25am outside the front of the station on Greenwich High Rd, near the Novotel (not by the DLR entrance). Please indicate on the registration form that you will be joining at Greenwich.
