  1. As someone who conducts hundreds of interviews, I can confirm that interviewees often request to be interviewed at coffee shops or obscure locations nearer their house rather than risk being seen going in to the premises of a potential future employer.
  2. We slept on an IKEA sofa bed for two years without complaint. Because studio living is big in Sweden, they are excellent at designing clever and comfortable sofa beds. They are easy to assemble quickly, have good storage solutions and are comfy and affordable. IKEA all the way.
  3. I agree Otta. Property prices are unreasonable across London, especially Zones 1&2. I don't think East Dulwich is remarkable in that matter. Unfortunately anyone buying a property in London these days is paying for something overpriced. I don't think it defines them as people though. It doesn't mean they are a type of person willing to generally pay over the odds for things. In fact, having paid over the odds for property in East Dulwich can sometimes mean having to scrimp and save elsewhere. Of course there are clearly a lot of people doing well in East Dulwich and have the funds to shop where they like and pay extortionate prices for pizza, bread, clothes, whatever. I say fair play to them. In most cases they will have worked hard, earned their money or had a bit of luck we all wish for ourselves along the way.
  4. I like Iceland and M&S and wish we could have both. However, cheap does not necessarily mean good value. Expensive does not necessarily mean overpriced. Much of M&S product is expensive because it is sourced in a superior way to Iceland (origin, quality, sustainability, organic, environmentally considerate etc). If these things are important to you, and you have the money to pay for it, then M&S can be expensive but not overpriced. Likewise, Iceland can be cheap because it makes compromises on these things. Which is fine if cost is your most important consideration. Different strokes for different folks. As for staffing, in all likelihood, M&S will want to provide the best staff possible to ensure customer happiness and consequently their success. The usual process would be to advertise the roles and allow existing Iceland staff to apply. Then interview all candidates and select the best people for the job. This may well be the existing staff if they are good. I intend to travel to Peckham for Iceland and get stuck in to the M&S meal deals - ?10 for wine, a side, a main and a pudding for 2. That really is good value for money.
  5. Starbucks, McDonalds, Nero, all the big chains have free wifi. That's because their analysts have advised them it's good for business. Ie good for making money. Independents usually, wisely, follow the learnings of these big chains. Free wifi is to encourage people to linger. Lingerers are more likely to repeat purchase coffee and food. Nero wants their business and encourages it. Having said that, it's always rude to take up more space than you need, especially when demand is high. Just ask them to budge over.
  6. Yes. But what about the wall? Is it an intentional play area?
  7. Could be fleas. We had fleas from a previous owners cat. They were dormant and sprung to life especially for us. Joy. We bought flea bombs. Canister that you set off before you leave the rooms. They worked fine, no need for exterminator. If you look at a white sheet long enough and see a wee black bug, check it out, if it leaps inexplicably away, it's a flea. They love little children I'm afraid. Sods.
  8. On Monday we do. Camberwells tiny gym at 10 or the cinema EDPH at 11 for toddler time
  9. Is that wall supposed to be walked on? Surely not? I know kids will walk on it, but it can't have been in the plans surely?
  10. Switching this around....before you know a fried egg sandwich is a fried egg sandwich, jeez it stinks like something you would never eat.
  11. The programme didn't take bioavailability into account. Having said that, in a significant amount of bioavailability studies calcium is better absorbed by humans via water than milk.
  12. After watching Food Unwrapped on water recently, I decided to check out our local tap water stats. Something interesting I learnt is that if you drink a litre of our tap water, you get 250mg of calcium. 700mg is the daily recommended amount. So a litre of our East Dulwich tap water is equivalent to a glass of full fat milk (in relation to calcium). Evian for example, only has 80mg of calcium per litre. Even more reason to drink plenty of water and get it from the tap! (figures from Thames Water).
  13. Had the Stone Bass special last night. IT WAS AMAZING. I'm not a fish person usually but wow. If you are going for dinner and fancy a real treat, definitely order this if its still on (it's the special).
  14. I'm sorry to hear this and don't know what it could be. What I can say is I'm using a very good product on my eyelashes to help grow them, that they also make for eyebrows. It's called Talika Lipocils. It helps hair grow quickly in these areas. If you go to you tube and look up bloggers reviews of it you get an idea of its success. Best wishes.
  15. I wanted a broad range of views. So thanks to everyone for their replies here and via pm. Happy to receive more thoughts. It's very beneficial for a new mum to hear sage advice from those more experienced.
  16. Ha ha. I thought this was pet advice.
  17. An old post mentions, the headmaster might be leaving. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?
  18. We are considering Heber nursery. We felt there was a really good vibe on a recent visit. However, another mum has suggested it is over subscribed, very cramped, not much natural light and that older children play in the same area as the small ones. Are there any Heber mums who had similar concerns?
  19. Thanks. But what do you do with your child before the age of 7?
  20. Hello, forgive my ignorance. The website for Dulwich hamlet juniors says pupils start at age 7. So you have to have them in another school then move them over?
  21. Co-Op's own brand food is a shocker. My young son was eating a sausage roll (one of his favourite things) from there the other day and was spitting bits out saying it had pips in it. I had to inform staff of little nibbles in all the bags of popcorn and in lots of the bread wrappers. Clearly a mouse problem. It's grim.
  22. Jeremy, I stand by my analogy. Otta, I'm not going to trawl the forum for evidence for you. It's what I feel. I assume the post above is what you feel? I didn't ask for evidence to support your view. Now we have both said what we feel. What a great forum.
  23. I feel like there are people on the East Dulwich Forum who use and would use M&S and get upset when they feel like other people are sneering at them as somehow superior because they use M&S. There's just a slightly nasty undercurrent to some posts. 24. We went to the showing of A Little Chaos last night and the cinema looks fantastic. The decor is lovely. Lots of bare brick and reclaimed materials. The bar area is really comfortable with a mix of high tables and big comfy booths. The 3 screens are a decent size and the seats are super comfortable. The back row of each screen has double seats and little tables to put your drinks on. Even the toilets are like a day spa. The menu is great, a wide selection of interesting and tasty treats. We tried the hotdog and the burger. Both nice but the burger was exceptional. The chips were pretty good too. We would definitely go just for drinks and dinner, it's a destination in its own right. The snack selection was interesting and varied (a little pricey). It included cured meats, tubs of retro sweets, alcoholic sorbets and icecreams and all the usual big bags of sweets. The popcorn was nice and fresh and tasty. The garden courtyard wasn't open yet but if it's anything like the rest of it, it's going to be a really lovely hangout in the summer. Really excited about our new addition to the lane!! If anyone hasn't been down yet and wants to look at photos, there are plenty on my blog: http://showmelovelylittlethings.tumblr.com
