  8. I remember reading a paper on The Irish political economy some time ago. from a historical perspective, it was interesting reading & some points stuck - the resources that poor people made available to the church, usually to their own detriment - the favoured first son being given all the funds and assiatnce needed to get him into the priesthood if at all possible, whilst the rest of the family made do with whatever was left to keep themselves alive , perpetuating the circle of poverty.

Distasteful behavior Still, it would be a cheaper option , but time expensice to find Whatever brand of God provides the best option for your kids education and give it 3 or so years of worship and glad handing the vicar/priest/Rabbi etc at every opportunity to get his approval for the school it is attached to . and you go to heaven at the end of it apparently , so maybe not entrely wasted

Physically in terms of its effects, its rubbish , but you cant discount the placebo effect - ditto healing crystals, Orgone therapy, hot stones and their quack bedfellows. The benefits of immunisation are obvious and well documented - many millions or Billions of lives have benefited from the various programmes If you choose not to participate, then the risks from disease are far greater than any potential side effect form the vaccination - you owe it to your children ( and everyone they come into contact with) to do the best you can for them - anything else is irresponsible and dangerous
  17. any central bank will nowadays actively hedge its currency against a basket/ baskets of currencies - the individual currencies themselves may refer, to a greater or lesser extent, on a nominal or implied gold reference valuation GB did indeed sell Gold, but remember at that time, Gold was an expensive asset to hold - producing little real return with its low lease rates and phenomenal storage costs. A move to a market based curreny stockpile was more indicitative and responsive to pressures and variables in the market adopting a gold standard is dated and potentially risky - the web of derivatives that are used by corporates and governments make any valuation of a physical somewhat opaque so yes. and no. and yes. and no. bottom line, you cannot make a family meal of gold any more than you can from a wad of Euros innit bludz

Racism is easily tossed around this forum and its sometimes the nuclear option to kill a discussion. Sadly, it has become a 21st Century Godwin law 2.0 update in some cases - this does not maen that all threads that touch on racism are thus null and void or baseless - Guardian readers are more than willing to add the racist tag as a knee jerk, I find, but it can devalue a discussion if used too often & inappropriately. I am more disturbed by the words that are NOT used when people make a point, than the words that are being used - the inference is subtle, but there.Outside this forum, I'm not alone in thinking this - despite not commenting earlier.
