That, and the fact it is round the corner from the train station, is why I would imagine Morrison's future shoppers will arrive on foot. There's a hell of a lot of communter footfall passing by for which it will be a convient pit stop - but someone will feel the pain.

Planning permission was granted to build 20 residential units over four storeys with commercial and community space on ground floor. The developer was required to include space for the library to relocate as part of that permission. Sunday Assembly for South London?

Cedges, I think you will find that EDF would grind to a standstill if only "necessary" comments were allowed. I hold no great antipathy towards the SA movement, I also agree with you that it appears to be trying to do good but let's say the event was to be help in the EDCC instead, or some other ED venue, even those who had no interest in attending the service may feel they would like to question how the traffic & parking demand generated by an event aimed at the wider South London populous may encroach upon the surrounding residential roads. Here's link to the website for anyone interested in attending http://sundayassembly.com/ -

Sunday Assembly for South London?
Chick Pea replied to Trevor Moore's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think the organisers of this rapidly growing movement need to grow broader shoulders if they are going to take offence with comparisons of their movement to cults or Disney. Community spirit is alive and kicking round here by the way, along with regular meetings of like minded people in a variety of non religious/political formats ie dinner table, pub, cinema, theatre, sports field etc . I can see that this movement offers a "new community spirit" for those unable to find it within their existing friends and family networks or those who fancy the idea of being part of a massive, noisy, gang. As this movement does attract large audiences then I would have thought an event aimed at the whole of South London would be much better located than Crystal Palace which is a mare to get to at the best of times and has congested one way system with inadequate parking. Good luck with the locals who have been campaigning against a gathering of the religious kind with the same catchment as this due to negative impact of traffic and parking. -

Huggers Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > how about the east london line back to Surrey > QUAYS from P Rye and change for Crystal Palace? No thanks. I'm not prepared to give up two hours of the weekend commuting 4k. That journey would begin with a walk or bus ride to ED train station followed by two trains, then a 20 minute uphill walk or bus ride to the venue from CP train station. A distance of approx 4k would take over an hour on public transport and that estimation does not include the delays caused by traffic. I'd get on my bike if I had one, if it weren't all uphill from here, which is why I think most people travelling from ED would come by car. Is the Sunday Assembly a way for atheists to get in on the cult scene or are they simply lost in Disneyland? -
Crystal Palace Rd - Robberies / Warning

I was referring to the owners of the properties not the organisations running them, sorry if that came across otherwise. It would appear that there are some less than philanthropic individuals in the hostel business. Run down properties, usually ex local authority or HA, are snapped up at auction for next to nothing and turned as many units, as can be legally crammed in. Minimum is done to improve the properties before they are let to agencies providing care for vulnerable people paid for by the tax payer. It gets tricky when the rent charge to the agencies impedes upon the cost of care provision. Whole system needs overhauling if you ask me. -

Thanks henryb. Lady D - I really don't expect or think it necessary that links to are provided to validate comments but when statistics are used in discussions I do like to know the source.

Can you please post the source of those statistics Henryb?

Sunday Assembly for South London?

Just noticed this and wonder how the organisers expect people from ED to get there. Apart from rubbish public transport links to Crystal Palace, this is on a Saturday. Has anyone tried to drive round the Triangle on a Saturday, especially if there's a CPFC match on? Looks like the organisers expect to utilise the shoppers' car park for their congregants/gatherers, putting them in direct conflict with patrons of the Triangle and the congregant/gatherers of the Greek Orthodox Church, the Salvation Army, the Methodist Church and the Celestial Church of God. Bloody hell. -

"Don't put up with dumped rubbish - report it! The following link opens in a new windowYou can report flytipping online here or call the 24 hour hotline on 020 7525 2000. If the rubbish has been dumped on public or council owned land we'll make sure the rubbish is removed and the crime is investigated by our enforcement officers. We're not able to remove rubbish from private land, but may be able to provide help dealing with landlords who do not clear up rubbish on their land." Let's say I can see where you're coming from Lady D ; ) I'm all for a redistribution of road space that prioritizes pedestrian and cyclists over motor vehicles but I'm also in favour of bikes, not individuals, being insured/licenced. The revenue from this to be ring fenced for investment in a network of cycle super higways. Southwark is one of the leading boroughs when it comes to road safety - most of the borough is now 20mph. A combination of the 20mph zones and the increased volume of motor vehicles on our streets makes cycling by far the fastest option to get from a. to b.

It's > akin to talking to a brick wall. My only hope is > that you get hit with enough on the spot fines to > deter you. Hi V - it is perfectly possible and safe to cycle on the pavements but only when the pavement is pedestrian free and wide. Also Lady D is female so as far as I'm concerned that means she is a better ie more concientous rider than the male - yeah I am biased but that's based on expereince. Talking about cycle lanes, I noticed a few months back whilst driving to Crystal Palace Park that Southwark have installed an innovative new cycle lane along Dulwich Wood Park. Basically the pavement was widened and the outside edge coloured green with a white line that demarks pedestrian and cycle usage - cyclists ride on green bit. It's not all black and white. Edited for third time to add: I am not advocating pavement cycling just accepting that it is not always dangerous!
-
Lady D are you making a case being for pavement cycling? Of course if all cyclists were considerate and slow like vic flange for example, then perhaps there could be room for manouvre but they are not. The fact that bikes have changed since 1800, you don't see many riders on Penny-farthings, and reach much faster speeds makes the current legislation outlawing pavement cycling even more pertinent - don't you agree?

cubista Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > No to a shopping centre at Crystal Palace, but > bring back this Hi cubista, motor racing has been back at CPP for last couple of years http://www.motorsportatthepalace.co.uk/ Not a lot of people know this but as well as the Italian Job, racing scenes from Rush http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rush_%282013_film%29 were filmed there last year.

Some valid points and good to know that a case is not been made for pavement cycling. I thought jonsuissy was having a moan about how pedestrians make it difficult for cyclists to ride on the pavements.

jonsuissy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- Not funny when a pedestrian walks in front of you > without looking. Not funny for either party. Isn't that why bikes have bells? You see one of those darn pavement walkers hovering close to the kerb, probably mid text or simply navel gazing and you know they don't pay any attention to the highway ode. Do you a) continue cycling towards them risking shredding your fave Lycra shorts in a full on collision or b) do you ring your bell to alert the walker to your imminent arrival, avoid the collision and save your shorts?
-
Jonsuissy I am loving the profile of the wayward pedestrian, this is thread is comedy central. I can see Cycle Weekly or some such quality mag doing in depth reportage on the menace that is the pavement walker *cue scary music provided by Dr King and the Old Timers*

Cycling on pavements is an offence regardkess of the stats, there does seem to be an awful lot more of it and the ones I have witnessed have all been male. Last week I saw a middle aged male in non Lycra cycle on the pavement at the side of a cycle lane - anarchy or total tosspottery?
-
Stats schmats - so what? Cycling on pavements is an offence and pedestrians should not stand, or rather make way, for it.
