  1. Will I'm not sure your SD v HD is right as I dont believe that anyone is transmitting 1080p (and as I understand it wont for the forseeable future). I'd also say that cable is comparable if not better than other TV solutions and it's less affected by other influences such as weather. I'd also say the definition can be improved - upscaling - and the v+ box upscales standard def. Ok it's artificial but there you go Adam One way of looking at it is that your TV is probably set up in 1080p (1920x1080) mode and if your watching standard def (720x576) then your tv (or the source) has to literally make up the extra pixels. If you're not happy with the DVD player too then I'd imagine it's the TV that's causing you concern, not Virgin. Try changing some of the display settings in the settings page on the Virgin Media service - try cycling through the 1080i, 720p and widescreen settings until you find one you think looks better). Also, is your DVD player an upscaling player with HDMI? If not I'd recommend buying one, you'll definitely see improvements (have a look around avforums, i'm not sure what the latest budget recommendation is but i'd imagine it'd be a Sony for circa ?50). You say you've looked at Avforums, but have you looked for a thread on settings? If you've a decent panasonic I'm sure there will be a thread somewhere on which a load of people will have posted the optimal settings for your TV, if you cant find it I'd recommend turning off all the special settings (probably featured on a sticker on the TV). I'm sure you'll soon start to appreciate your TV If you wander into a high street retailer and tell them of your issue, they'll probably try and sell you something like a Monster HDMI cable. From all the stuff I've read it's just a waste of money spending tons on HDMI cables
  2. Do you have a v+ box, if so are you connecting it to your tv with a HDMI cable? If not, my first tip would be to get a hdmi cable for your v+ box. Might be worth confirming what your setup is and what you've done so far. CRT technology was/is brilliant for standard definition TV and it's unlikely your LCD will produce better looking SD quality. The real advantages come from PS3 games, Blu-ray, HD content (try channel 108 BBC HD as an example)and the fact that the TV itself looks a lot sleeker. Another tip would be to search for your TV model on AVForums.com and you might be lucky and find that there's a thread with users giving tips on the best settings for your TV.
  3. there's one in dulwich village (just past the greyhound pub). the 30% has been live for about 2 weeks now so choice may be a little more limited. The one in the village seems to have some older vintages (such a w&*?ky word) which has been a bonus with a couple of purchases.
  4. definitely recommend a wander over to oddbins at the moment. they've got 30% off a selection of wines which i understand from another forum is because theyve been taken over by a new company and they're selling off (well 30%) stock which they'll no longer be buying.
  5. ah, i'd never thought about the servant element before. right, that's it, next time I'm shopping I'm going to slam the door on their face. That'll show them I'm no servant.
  6. Definitely recommend pies and prejudice by Stuart Maconie on the beauty of the north. Why is it that the news channels need to have North of England correspondents, but no South of England correspondents? I'm a northerner (nr Bury and Bolton) enjoying ED for 2 years now and London for 9. Biggest difference? I remember my first trip down Oxford Street shopping and throughout the day whenever I held the door of a shop open to let someone else through, there was no "thanks love" or "cheers mate", they just walked through without uttering thanks or offering a cheeky wink. On a positive note, the other big difference is that Londoners have perfected the art of escalator travel; very few citys up north would or have split an escalator into a slow and fast lane. Of course I could mention the difference what you get for your money in terms of property, but that would also depress me! Another good piece: sticking up for the north
  7. I'd also recommend a trip to avforums.com, where if you ask questions that havent been asked before and arent something you could very easily find on google, are extremely helpful (and knowledgable) Sometimes HD can really improve the quality of the program. 2 examples for me recently have been the lost land of the jaguar on the BBC which looks amazing, the other is "in the valley of elah" where there's one shot about half way through with Tommy Lee Jones and you get a side on shot of him at the wheel and the detail you can see in his face of all his lines really enhances how the world is against him at that moment
  8. Yep, he came around last night to my flat. Apparently I'm paying ?300 more on electricity than any of my neighbours (even though I didnt reveal anything). I asked him for a business card and If I decide I want to change I can call up, I'm not writing and signing my name on any clipboard. He didnt seem (or want) to get this, but eventually I just told him, look if I want to change I'll take a look at uswitch and call a preferred supplier. He was a pain in the ar*e but not aggressive
  9. Currently enjoying a bottle of domaine la berangeraie cuvee juline cahors from g&b with an eye on the football. Got to be said that the wine is of much better quality than their footie team - and hopefully with it being organic and only 12.5% I shouldnt feel too bad in the morning
  10. i last went on a friday about 2 months ago on the top table deal. deal was pretty good, food was pretty good, but it was pretty quiet in there
  11. I know the 'C' word is usually frowned upon in here, but MrB's comments got me thinking (the fire exit bit). If done right it could be as good as Four o Nine in Clapham - if not even better as the environment upstairs at EDT is loads better. Be good to have a speakeasy type place in ED which wasnt the kebab place

Hey annasfield Apologies if you've put the detail in a previous post but I've just read the last 4 pages and didnt see anything, I'm sure I read somewhere over the weekend that all this stuff about names on the ticket was a bluff and that both Chelsea and United had said that their tickets wont have names on them - might be worth investigating further?
  13. I cant make my mind up about GTAIV yet. So far the gaming is quite simplistic. I guess (and hope) its part of training for harder missions. If nothing else it's like immersing yourself in sopranos for 1/2 an hour with a little more control.
  14. luckily no queues in brixton's woolies this morning. Feel like a kid again, can't wait to get home and grab a quick hour or so before the united game. definitely downing tools at 5.30 tonight to get home asap just great reviews everywhere GTAIV reviews
  15. If anyone's not been able to join up to the beginners running class over at the dulwich park runners, and are looking for help in staying motivated I can whole heartily (well after 1 run this evening) recommend the new Nike+ sportband. It costs ?40 ( plus about another fiver for a pouch for the sensor to sit on your laces if you dont want, as i didnt, to buy the nike+ trainers) and is pretty simple to use. Pop the sensor on your shoe, the band on your wrist and off you pop (and in my case wheeze a little). When you get back, after you've recovered, you unplug the USB bit from the wrist band and pop it in your pc and it'll upload your run. You can then track your performance for all your runs with things like distance, km/h, calories burnt. You can even get a group of you to upload your runs into a community and help motivate each other that way too. more here if you're interested nike plus sportband even if you're not going to get the thing, I'd definitely recommend clicking on my runs at the bottom of the page and then go into the MAPIT section, as this is a really good tool for mapping a route for your run and it also showing you how far the run is. There seems to be a few dulwich types who've already logged runs on map it.
  16. If you havent been a Nokia man before, then for what reasons do you think you'll be an LG man? Might be worth getting the main man to confirm what browsers this site supports (as I'm sure it doesnt support the PS3's browser) - not sure what browser the LG has but i guess it could be a problem? Opera mini still seems to be the main browser of choice for surfing on the phone but you'll need to download it from opera. If you're a big fan of your walkman headphones then you should be able to comfortably use them on the N958gb as it plugs into the headset in the same way the SE handsets do.
  17. Agree with the "depends what your needs are" with regards to the handset for you. I've just moved to the N95 8gb after about 3 years on mainly SE's and am just getting use to texting and find my way around - but it has a top notch camera, big sized screen, good quality music player, radio, wifi and all the other bits and bobs i want (but probably wont ever use) With regards to the viewty, I'd worry about the touch screen - would you really get on with it? Might be worth hanging fire for the SE C902 or the Samsung U900 (Soul) - both have all the top line features that people use (5mp camera, music player, browser etc) - I know that if you keep waiting for the next big thing, you'd never replace anything - but what features do you really need that arent on those phones?
  18. Benjaminty I've had the same issue with a V+ box using hdmi, everything works perfectly except for the pixelated and stuttering on demand content, and was told that second level support would fix it. It didnt. Engineer came out did some stuff with the box outside and it seems, touch wood, to be working fine now
  19. Agree that the place has nosedived. I get the impression (and it's not backed up with anything other than intuition) that they're more concerned with their mobile fish and chips presence.
  20. Bob, eating well might not be expensive, but eating poorer quality food is less costly
  21. I have to say I'm a total organic free range convert, but I cannot agree with all of these statements that 75% of people wrongly use money as an excuse. At the end of the day we're simply saying pay more for these animals which have been treated better for their very short life before they are stunned, slaughtered and killed. Yes, the organic and free-range can taste better but ultimately the pay more get better products works right through the shopping basket and beyond - a ?5 So Organic bottle of Red wine is not going to taste better than a ?30 bottle of wine made from organic grapes, a ?7k car is not going to perform as well as a ?35k car. A organic 1.75kg chicken at good ole sainsburys costs ?9.61, a free range ?7 and a "normal" chicken ?4.09 - if you start multiplying that by say 4 times a month then the difference very quickly starts to mount up - then do this with all the other meats too that a family of say 2 adults 2 children would consume in a month. Surely very very few people are going to risk their finances by purchasing food thats been looked after better and tastes better. We can all be judgemental about dont smoke, dont drink, dont buy lottery tickets, but at the end of the day it's all about personal choice.
  22. I'm sure us men folk could be catered for a little better on lordship lane. It's very female biased with the likes of all the eds and moos and mrs robinsons and the one by the mexican restaurant, and the one by green and blue and now this one!
  23. Have always favoured Franklins above Palmerston, but had a terrific meal in the palmerston this saturday. The lamb was absolutely sensational. The grief I always have with the pair of them (Franklins and Palmerston) is the wine list. I know you have to expect prices to be hiked up, but it's ridiculous (in my humble opinion). A bottle of firefinch red which is around ?7 in shops, is ?23 in the Palmerston.
  24. MP Are you able to expand on what you mean. I can't work it out sorry. You dont have a link to something like what you describe?
  25. i tried them on wednesday (or was it tues) this week. have to say the quality impressed me, was not glooping around in oil, and there were a couple of complimentary poppadoms in there. however, as it seems others have experienced, they did mess up still. they sent me the wrong naan. i ordered the dirtiest of all the naans, the keema, and they sent the sweet naan instead (the receipt on the bag even said keema). grrrr
